Lagos — It will be a festive occasion on Sunday when the 2005 Lagos State Sports Festival opens at the Onikan Stadium.

This is because Gov Bola Tinubu will lead his executive council members against the visiting executive council of Delta State, which is to be led by the governor, Chief James Ibori.

However, other activities lined up for the opening ceremony include a march past of all the local government areas and development councils in the state, corals and fireworks.

Lagos State Sports Commissioner, Mr Opeyemi Bamidele, said yesterday that Gov Tinubu is committed to the revival of sports in the state.

"The governor has offered two Kia cars to the first and second local governments in the festival to show that this is a new beginning in Lagos State sports," Bamidele told a cross section of LG chairman yesterday.

In all, there will be competition in 36 sporting activities in the festival, which is being held for the first time since 1983.

The LGAs and the CDAs have been grouped into 10 zones for the purpose of competition.

The venues for the festival, which will end on November 26, are Onikan Stadium, Rowe Park, Unilag Sports Centre and Lagos Country Club.
