I knew this would happen. As a business man whenever I want my customers to pay more I increase quality, but if they are not willing to pay I drop quality. Simple.

We all know the country is in bad shape but would you rather run generators with 700/ltr fuel or pay more for constant power supply.

Last night everywhere in my neighbourhood was pitch black after aedc cut supply; who them born well to on gen.

Let's get prepaid metres and control our power consumption as we have with fuel. This is the only way we can get quality. The genco and discos though corrupt still needs funds for upgrades and maintenances of thier infrastructure. If they are not making good profit don't expect constant supply. It's economics.

Exactly. It's economics.

Just recently I duplicated a house key. I had a choice between a high quality duplicate for N3500 or a low quality one for N2000.

DISCOS doesn't generate electricity, they only distribute what GENCOS generate for them.

And they have to pay the gencos, who in turn have to pay for gas...in dollars.

One reason why DISCOS reject power from gencos is the fact that if they accept too much power, they would have to pay the gencos more money than they have at the moment.

DISCOS also pay TCN for using transmission system to get power.

Hence the importance of cost reflective tarrifs.

Most of the DISCOS are corrupt, they used to reject load from GENCOS in the past, forcing GENCOS to spend money again to store power. All what DISCOS know is just to collect money from customers but not upgrade their equipment, The main reason they dont pick is their degraded equipments cannot carry loads and they will still give people estimated bills for unsupplied load, even to pay GENCOS sometime hard.

Every customer should try everything within their power to get a prepaid meter; if all customers (or 90% of them) are using prepaid meter PHCN will sit-up, because it means they will only be paying for what they actually consumed and not an estimated bill.
Re: Electricity Generation Drops 16% To 3,501MW by babastanlolo: 10:49am On Jul 21, 2023
Basically, the DISCOS are not being allowed to charge cost reflective tarrifs.

At one point in 2017 , they even had their bills frozen for 2 years.

Naturally, one won't be able to do much improving with such issues. Government still sets their prices, and pays them a subsidy that is not enough for their needs.

So the result is poor power supply, poor distribution and low geberation

( Just to show you how bad our generation is, Lagos alone needs 10000 MW daily for 24 hour light)

Until DISCOS are allowed to charge cost reflective tarrifs, and until there is an end to power stealing, and until universal metering is a thing...we are not going to get 24 hour light.

You can only give what you have, not what you wish you have.

WHILE I QUITE AGREE WITH YOUR SUBMISSION. BUT WE HAVE HAVE TO LOOK AT THE ISSUE OF AFFORDABILITY VIS-A-VIS THE LOW INCOME OF MOST NIGERIA AND EVEN LACK OF MONEY DUE TO JOBLESSNESS. CONTINUING INCREASES IN PRICES WILL EVENTUALLY COLLAPSE THE ECONOMY. FOR INSTANCE, FUEL DEMAND HAS DROPPED BY 50% HOW HAS THE INCREASE IN PRICES BENEFITED THE MARKETEERS AND FILLING STATIONS? IF I DON'T HAVE MONEY TO EAT I WONT BE PAYING MUCH FOR ELECTRICITY JUST BECAUSE IT IS AVAILABLE. THE TO DEREGULATE ALL SECTORS OF OUR NATIONAL LIVES WHERE GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IS REQUIRED AS WITH OTHER COUNTRIES EVEN DEVELOPED ONES WOULD ONLY LEAVE TO FURTHER IMPOVERISHING OF THE PEOPLE AND BY EXTENSION THE INDUSTRIES. PEOPLE WILL ONLY LOOK OUT FOR SURVIVAL LIKE FOOD AND HOUSING. EVERYTHING OTHER SECTORS WILL SEE DECLINE.

All that is true...but the main problem is DISCOS themselves do not earn enough from bills because they have been forced to charge below the cost of producution, of power per kwh, meaning they do not make enough profit to accept all the load the gencos send to them....and they can't do upgrades either.

No profit, problem dey.
Re: Electricity Generation Drops 16% To 3,501MW by PrincessDiana: 11:13am On Jul 21, 2023
I agree with you. There should be a law that prohibits electricity theft and allows DisCos to switch off light within a particular radius until residents bring forth the thief. Let them do this at least until they can afford technology that can help mitigate against electricity theft.
Policing consumers is a huge cost to the power distribution companies.

ceejayluv:

Before total deregulation, the discos should be mandated to meter ALL consumers. In fact, estimated billing should be banned thenceforth. Also, power theft should be heavily sanctioned by imposing Long prison terms, no option of fine.

People sill bypass the meter. And fight disco officials who catch them doing so.

My former landlord once had to pay off debts on a meter in one of his rentals because the previous tenant bypassed the meter and then vamosed when his rent expired

LMAO, thier new meters ain't easy to bypass, as they put it right on polls outside, immediately u temper with am, them go know..Also they currently have large meters for all areas, after subtracting money of metered people, d balance would be divided as estimated billing to unmetered households in dat area...so if u no get meter & ur neighbour get & him dey bypass...it means u dey pay part of d money for them grin

(Disclaimer: I do not support APC, PDP, LP or Tinubu. A good way to understand our power sector is to google PwC's report on the power sector...Solving the liquidity crunch in the Nigerian power sector...published in 2018 which gives a good account of the problems.)
See ehn i have no problem with this your theory
The problem is that theory can never ever work in Nigeria
How?
Okay in places where these kind of theories work, first the service is constant not up and down oo CONSTANT!!
Secondly the government makes sure that they are buffers in place to ease burdens of this theory
That's why the uk have benefits, The US welfare checks ,food stamps et al
Same for other countries in Asia and Europe
Can you hand on heart say the same applies in Nigeria

You are right, even with the devaluation of naira, they have to jerk up the rate, but they must give everybody prepaid meter and stop those who always bypass. Both the DISCOS and some Nigerians themselves are criminals.

Why must they hike their rates, do they purchase the electricity in dollars?

Who forced them if not greed of na be get am, to go & buy toxic government assets in a sector they know nothing about?
