Happy July 27th in advance to all Easterners.
We will celebrate many more years of this.
July 27th marks an important day, the day Samuel Ajayi crowther arrived Onitsha and introduced Christianity and education to the easterners.
Today southeast is among the most educated tribe in Nigeria and very religious with Christianity being predominant. All thanks to Samuel Ajayi Crowther

Below is a piece of what he wrote regarding Onitsha, he met the people there scantily clothed and uncivilized. They were idle and uneducated.

We need to thank God for the life of late Samuel Ajayi Crowther. He translated English bible to Yoruba. He wrote the first Igbo textbook (Iso-ama)

I can't help but laugh at ignorance. What on earth was he coming to onitsha to do when his homeland till date has been filled with unconverveted stark pagans who have of recent being reject by the illorin autocratic institute .
Tell this story to gullible Nigerians. Igbo and south east Nigeria was evangelised and liberated by white people. Ajayi Crowther was still a slave when Jajah of opobo embraced Christianity and education .

Reverend Henry Venn Taylor was a freed slave from Sierra Leone who became one of the first missionaries to Igbo land in Nigeria. He was born in 1830 in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to Igbo parents who had been enslaved and brought to the Americas. He was freed as a child and educated in the CMS Grammar School in Freetown

Smh. This is the kind of horrible reputation ungrateful Igbo youths like you have used to dent Igbo everywhere, scare away your destiny helpers and repel non-Igbo from coming to live, work and invest in Igboland.

That poor parenting and how Igbo parents abandoned parenting to chase money , that the Anambra state Governor, Prof. Soludo, cried over recently, remain the bane of the SE. Most of you were left unto yourself and it's settled in the scriptures that a child left unto himself will come to ruin. You have been irredeemably ruined by hate, lies, arrogance, ingratitude, lack of respect for elders/leaders and bigotry.

If you can be this despicable towards the cherished memory and legacies of the revered late Bishop Ajayi Crowther who helped your great great grand forebears to expose them to civilisation then it's finished for you.c'est finis. Most of you just don't know where to end your shenanigans.

To help you understand the reality of the sacrilege you committed by mocking the great sacrifice this man made to be your destiny helper today, below is the population of Lagos as at then. No Igbo in Lagos then and Igbo started coming out after his missionary work. He brought civilisation to Igboland. You should actually declare every July 27th the Ajayi Crowther Day in the whole of Igboland.

This is from the many private documentations compiled by archivist Pa Oloko Alli-Balogun, an octogenarian from Lagos.

The population of Lagos Colony was analysed into 'Yoruba' and 'Non-Yoruba' tribes:

1. Eko tribe had fallen from 57% in 1872 to 23.6% 20 years later.
2. Popo or Egun tribe was 15.85%,

3. Other Yoruba groups
Oyo - 11.6%
Ijebu - 11.01%
Awori - 9.26%
Egba - 6.05%
Ijesha - 4.32%
Egbado - 3.63%
Ekiti/Efon people - 1.76%

4. Non-Yoruba groups
Nupe/Tapa - 1.86%
Hausa - 1.86%
The Kru - 1.37%.

The strength of the Eko tribe was concentrated in Wards A, B, C and D of Lagos Town and Harbour, and the Central District of Ebute Metta/Yaba.

The Aworis were concentrated in the Central District and the Popo's or Egun in the Western District.

Onitsha has since gone from those days to not only hosting the largest market in West Africa, it is also the city with the largest number of story buildings in Nigeria

From nothing to a concrete jungle. An eternal testament to the determination of the people

Abeg school them. Missionaries are already in Onitsha before Crowther. All of them came from Freetown and had all ethnicities among them following the British

Calm down. No need to feel your ego is dented. Ajayi crowther really helped west africa and even as Igbos we should be proud. Same way Yoruba aknowledge Azikiwe is father of Nigeria.

No need to let this new knowledge burst your tribe. Moreover it encourages more outsiders to visit SE.

You be real Ode. So going to Lagos is civilization? I thought it's a sign of people's land being unproductive? Confused mugu. What do we need Lagos for in those days? The British were already here since 1840s and Onitsha was thriving with a British River port. The only thing that brought us to Lagos was almagamation, that was when Lagos had advantage as capital and people moved there. And we arrive before yorubas (apart from indegenous villagers)
From data below, Igbos started migrating to Lagos in 1911 (Aro Confederacy which controlled Igboland was defeated by British in 1902) while yorubas started migrating to Lagos in 1931.
You must be daft by using migration to Lagos as a yardstick for civilization. Do you think Lagos was better than places like Calabar and Onitsha before the amalgamation?
