Barbie (2023)

"A movie about a doll, that almost became dull itself".

As a non ardent follower of the "Barbie" lore before now, this piqued my interest solely because of who was making it.

The first half of the movie was a good satire tone, set in Barbie-land with Barbie rules and Barbie-triarchy in full force, and it was good, with eye popping colours and pink props to match. Then the 2nd half just cascaded into an unnecessary gender commentary that would have seemed fresh some 3 years ago that will actually make cis men want to turn away from it.

The cast totally shines tho, and it such a shame that being such a great cast, they could have gotten much more out of them. Margot Robbie is the star of the show, ever since her roles in "The Wolf of Wall Street" (2013) and as Harley Quinn, she has totally embodied the Bimbo role to perfection, and her casting here might be most accurate type cast in the history of cinema, I can't think of someone else nailing this role other than her, she's was totally in a natural niche. Ryan Gosling shines too and America Ferrara also delivered with little screen time.

I have always respected Greta Gerwig's craft, but i have questioned her creative choice of this from the get go. In her short filmography, she has been able to make "feminist rebellion" movies that are heavily masked and told in the most creative way possible that will make even the most hardened "far right man", stand in the picket line for women's rights. But this was screaming "topple the patriarchy" with every intent. She chose her real life partner,Noah Baumbach, as a writing partner for this, and on paper i was excited about this, but seeing this, it was clearly evident this was not their finest writing, and it seems neither was in control. They looked nothing like the duo that has brought us, "Marriage Story" (2019), "Little Women" (2019)", Frances Ha (2012).

The intense months of marketing gymnastics for this has placed it on a very high pedestal with expectations shooting through the roof. It seems it worked to fully bait with its rizz and razzmattaza, but it's mainly non cinephile that fell for it, so i doubt if they will still stick around after the colour and props fades and it's time to to decipher the actual message of the movie and so i would very much like to see how this movie does in the coming weeks when the "meth high rush" of the first week has died.

It's not a bad movie but it's not as good as the hype suggests currently. Probably, people who are fans of the lore will appreciate it better but in my honest opinion, depending on your FOMO meter, you can actually wait this out till it sails.

That is why I advised you to conduct research into the statistics and numbers, and make your own calculations. I have previously addressed the woke clowns in the mainstream media who are trying to portray a false picture of its success. How in the world can a movie with a $250 million production budget and a projected $140 million marketing budget need $500 million to not only break even but be deemed a success?

That's like saying they get to keep all of the movie's theatrical earnings, so cinemas all over the world now show Disney movies for free. You should learn more about how these things operate and dig deep into them before talking.

@bolded
So the rumours I heard were true...

Baddestguyp:
I don't like what I'm hearing about Barbie movie at all

Everyone says it's started well then dissolved into wokeness... something well hidden from the trailer...
They marketed it as a simple fun movie...made sure to hide all forms of wokeness in the trailers

Apparently it starts out in Barbieland where women rule and men are subservient.
Then Ken travels to the real world and the real world is portrayed with major patriarchy issues. Men walking on the street slapping women's bรปtts and all.

Ken brings this patriarchy to Barbieland and revolt and take over Barbieland with other men. The women have to fight back and regain control.

Now here is where it gets worse...

Barbie apparently refuses equal rights with men in Barbieland...
She says that the men in Barbieland will only be given equal rights when the women in the real world have equal rights

Omo... shocked
How did they hide these all from the trailers?
They said the word "Patriarchy" is mentioned so many times in the movie...wtf
And some people on this thread almost killed me yesterday for saying I heard such rumours

But because it doesn't suit your agenda, you now want me to dig deep until I discover crude oil.
Every report puts The Little Mermaid's break even point between $500m to 600m. At $600m, they have $44m left that they can easily get and surpass from the digital release.

Funny how when The Little Mermaid struggled at the box office, you claimed it was because of wokeness. But when Mission Impossible 7 failed to meet opening weekend projections, you suddenly realized that the box office has been volatile this year.

Everybody go dey alright las las sha.

The story... Was there even a story? Yeah, just a simple storyline, but the acting and the gun porn is what would keep your attention span and interest from start to finish. It's no Den of Thieves, but it was quite ok in its own way.

First of all, stop moving the goalposts. You know, whenever we talk about movies flopping and such, we always refer to their box office revenue. Attempting to manipulate the situation by including merchandise sales and other factors is not a good idea at this point. The little mermaid has earned $555 million worldwide as of this writing. Internationally, it has made $260 million, and domestically, $295 million.

I took into account the companies' negotiations in my earlier post because they typically keep about 52 percent of the domestic gross and 42 percent of the international box office revenue. 52 percent of 295 is 153, while 42 percent of 260 is 109. There are approximately $127 million in losses when you add the two and take the sum out of the estimated total budget (for production and marketing). If you think that isn't looking like a flop, then explain to me what you consider to be a flop.

Not to mention, it will be available for purchase starting on July 25โ€”just three days from nowโ€”on digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and Google Play, among others. I don't know why we are still stressing this; just take your L quietly, and let's end this discussion right here.

Well, the movie has incredible legs so it'll be hard for me to take this L. grin grin

E fit still perform. grin

Okay, I see it now. The reports you are reading, including this one below, anticipate that the movie will also bring in hundreds of millions of dollars from other sources of revenue in addition to the projected $500โ€“$600 million. This merely supports my earlier assertion that the film must gross $780 million in order for Disney to consider turning a profit. They simply hope to accomplish that through other methods of generating income because their theatrical run was unsuccessful.

The argument I'm attempting to make is that the film is a box office dud because it failed to bring in enough revenue to actually break even or make a profit. It is not my intention for you to find crude oil when I ask you to conduct additional research. The crude oil is already visible to anyone who has a basic understanding of how these things work. You obviously don't know anything about these topics, which is why I asked you to do some research before speaking.

Additionally, I already earned my L for Mission Impossible, so why are you bringing up its box office earnings now? When predicting the box office revenue for a remake, taking wokeness or progression into account is nothing new. Many individuals appear to be doing that at the moment with the new Snow White movie they are working on. I know I can't always get it right but some of their previous box office failures can definitely be attributed to their wokeness.

Alright. Fair enough.

Failure can never be attributed to wokeness. If it could, there'd be no successful woke movies like Little Women, Enola Holmes or Call Me by Your Name and woke series like The Sandman and Wednesday.

The anti-woke crowd just jumps on badly written movies and claims it failed because of woke agenda. That's like claiming Black Adam flopped because it was pushing toxic masculinity agenda.

Is it me or has the ROI of going to the cinema to see a flick has diminished and at an all time low?. I swear, I have taken more L's than actual W alone ๐Ÿ˜ญ. I'm this close to just giving up on the whole thing and keep sailing full time like my fellow brothers in arms. Or maybe i am expecting too much? because movies on the big screen used to hit like crack and some were so good that will even warrant a 2nd trip. But now,it seems like these studios actually do not care about making proper flicks, as evident on the current row between them and the actors and writers whilst sitting on billions of dollars of capital. It makes no sense. They will rather employ agendist airheads that are so woke that they are battling more than 10 agendas pandering to nonsensical artsy BS that have no place in proper movies. That's why they are losing money at the BO and i fear that this nonsense will continue for the foreseeable future.

Maann...I have only 3 true guilty pleasures i truly indulge in with reckless abandon. Music, Movies and football... Music is already failing, the Saudi money bag seems like it will ruin football in the coming years, so I don't even know where to turn to if movies fail as well ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Nothing is permanent. No market stays bullish forever. There's always highs and lows in Hollywood, or any other venture. A decade ago, 2009 and 2010, off the top of my head, had similar issues. And then they got their mojo back in 2011 and now they've dipped again.

Also funny how the dip seems to follow economic turmoil. The stock market crash of 2008 and now the economic impact from COVID.

Anyways, this is the perfect for you to get into ANIME!!!

Mann. This dip in form is unprecedented!. I have never seen anything quite like it. The COVID pandemic can't be the reason anymore as enough time has passed for things to normalise. I'd be playing russian roulette with my time, money and data just to get through a good movie, and I'm losing 7 out of 10 times!

Maan. The Barbie hype is real. I went fully clothed to see "Opphemhemier" but it seemed like i was the only one interested in it, no one seems interested in sitting through a 3hrs flick about a bomb and war that ended ages ago ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ. The Nigerian education system is even the worst culprit, Gen z might not actually care about WWII.

So i just joined the Barbie queue and i had funds and time for only one of the 2 this weekend. I don't think i have it in me to go back, DUNE 2 was another one i was waiting for, but it seems WB are about to shift that to next year. So it might be au revoir in that regards for a while.

What is this one saying?

You went to watch Barbie in the cinema and you are complaining about return-on-investment from spending money at the cinemas?

You went to watch a childish film and expected to be satisfied as an adult?

People like me watch only big budget or strong plot movies att the cinema. That way, you will enjoy at least 65 to 70 percent of the movies you pay to watch at the cinemas.

For instance, these are the movies I have enjoyed this year at the cinemas

-John Wick 4
-Across the spiderverse
-Fast and furious X
-Guardians of the Galaxy 3
-Creed 3
-Mario

That is a movie a month this year. And I am yet to see Mission Impossible and Oppenheimer. I also enjoyed the Transformers movie this year.

Alright. So I think what I'm going to do is start you off with short series (13 episodes max) that are pretty newcomer-friendly and then we'll progress to 25 episode shows.
Also throw in a movie every now and then.

So start off with Violet Evergarden

You'll get to a stage where these movies feel very generic to you...they bring nothing new to the table...

The decision to not push back Mission Impossible feels dรปmber everyday

It's been completely overshadowed by two giants...

Now you're seeing the power of Barbenheimer....

Those two films has the greatest marketing I've ever seen in my life. Two films with pretty low early projections continuously promote both themselves.
The fans really pushed these movies.

You can't here about Oppenheimer without hearing about Barbie, vice versa.
Anyways, Cinemas WORLDWIDE are jumping especially North America.

Since endgame this might actually be the weekend were the total gross for all films hits $500mn.
All thanks to Barbenheimer.

Anyways kudos to WB in advance. That studio really needed this win. grin grin

WB are trying to make their stupid Warnering decisions again.

Pushing Dune 2 to 2024 because of strike and co is dumb. It literally has just the Marvels to contend with in November and it looks the better also coming from a strongly accepted original.

Then there's the more stupid decision of moving Aquaman 2 from December. That film literally has the best date of almost all movies this year. No blockbuster competition asides some genre movies which are mainly WB movies themselves.
