Following the recent hike in tuition fees in tertiary institutions and government schools, the National Association of University Students has threatened to embark on a mass protest against the recent hike in tuition fees in the country.

This was exclusively disclosed to our correspondent in a statement titled “Warning Against Tuition Fee Increment”, on Saturday, signed by the NAUS Chairman and National Deputy President, Eruobami Ayobami and Babalola Daniel, respectively.

“It is with great displeasure as we Write to condemn the act of the Federal Government as well as higher institutions who have decided to increase the price of tuition in this current economic disintegration,” part of the statement read.

The PUNCH, on Friday, reports that the management of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State has reportedly increased fees for undergraduate students in the institution.


This was contained in a statement dated July 20, 2023, by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, UNILAG branch following a meeting with the top management staff.

The students of the institution previously paid N19,000 but the management has fixed new fees at N190,250 for students studying medicine while for courses that require laboratory and studio, students are to pay N140,250.

Also, this paper reports that the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Education has increased the school fees of new students into Federal Government Colleges otherwise known as Federal Unity Colleges to ₦100,000.

According to the circular entitled, “Approved fees/ charges for Federal Unity Colleges (1st Term) for new students“, signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, new students are expected to part with ₦100,000 instead of the previous N45,000.

NAUS added that it is evident that The state of our university education is not encouraging and as such, implementations that will further negatively affect the educational system would not be encouraged.

“University is where every profession that runs the nation is trained and mentored, investing in the origin of every profession should never be a problem for any nation interested in development.

It warned that the student populace would not hesitate to stage a protest against any enactment on tuition increment.

“We want to reiterate that as students, we won’t hesitate to come out en-mass to protest against any form of implementation that poses a threat to the students’ community,” it added.

While assuring students of its commitment to protecting their interests at all times, the student’s body further urged various higher institutions that have made plans to hike their school fees to reconsider their plans as it will only do more bad than good to the academic system and as well adverse effect on the students

I went to school for cheap. I paid cheap fees.

In return, I got bad accomodation, bad library, bad lecture theaters, and a host of bad facilites because that was as far as cheap education could go.

Universites are expensive. Even all those people in US and UK take loans to go to school. All them free education countries pay for it in heavy taxes.

So what do they want the government to do? To make fees for university as low as N1000 per session, and we find money from where? With 99% of our revenue going to debt servicing?

The problem with most Nigerians and the reason why the ruling class will play them like fiddles forever is that they are always penny wise, pound foolish. The want the verisimilitude of getting their rights, even if they are actually being swindled. The elites know this, so they manipulate them by singing populist songs while mortgaging their futures.

Nothing is ever FREE. Not education, not healthcare. Someone is paying for it. In the countries you are comparing yourselves to, they fund thee programs through heavy taxes. Here in Nigeria, you don't want to pay taxes, yet you don't want to pay for education. Everyone (even ASUU sometimes!) seems to assume government will fund everything from oyel money. Never going to happen.

So what happens? The elites smirk and make the promise you what you want to hear. Because you do not deserve honest leaders.

Consider what happened to secondary education in Nigeria. After so many years of the masses demanding for free secondary education, they now have it. But guess what? Except for a few notable exceptions, "free" secondary education is a sad mistake that I m sure nobody on this thread will go for unless they had no choice. The poor think they have won that battle. The elites simply smirk again as their kids who attended expensive private schools grab all the openings in sight, while the children of the poor suffer for their parents' collective myopia.

A friend in one of the best departments in my university recently carried out a survey. He found out that over 90% of students in his department who took the survey were admitted from private (paying) secondary schools. So what happened? The poor got their "free" secondary education, but it is basically useless. Most of them struggle to get into polytechnics. They graduate and then start cursing the FG and creating Nairaland threads about how their education is useless.

How won't it be useless? They got the "free" education they wanted.

Take it from me, education cannot be "free" and "fit for purpose". You have to choose one. And while you do it, respect the man who has the balls to tell you the truth, because the one who will smirk and lie to you is waiting to destroy your life and those of your children with a useless free product.

Forget politics, forget that stuff...has low fees guaranteed decent universites? Nope.

The rate we are going, the private unis would even surpass the government unis, and employers would take notice.

Universities need to raise fees at a time it's spending N150m monthly on energy Bills alone.

I doubt fees won't have been increased if Obi was the one in Aso Rock.

Fees in Nigeria are low. The countries with good education fund them either by the kind of tax rates that would scare Nigerians, or by loans and grants, which students take to pay for their education.

Whoever is in Aso Rock, fees have to go up, or we beg IMF for more money.
