#19000 is just $25,where in this world that school charge 25USD as tuition fee only in Nigeria this is too cheap. Even the #190000 is too cheap that is about 250 USD.

It should be reduced to 5k with immediate effect.

Up to the late 90's when students unionism was at its peak ,Government were careful before making any anti- people decision due to the outrage this would follow but since the return of democracy student leaders themselves have turned to semi gods .

Go and check the budget on education and health, then compare it with that of national assembly with less than 1,000 population. Its really sad.

Our education budget for this year was 1.07 trillion naira, health 1.17 trillion naira, National Assembly 228 billion naira.

We should cut the NA budget by half though, but it won't do much.

Government spends hugely on education in many countries, except Nigeria. Education should be heavily subsidised and not made expensive. No government should expect revenues from education sector by making it expensive. It shapes the future of every nation

You can subsidise education if you are getting enough from tax. Nigeria gets 80% of its revenue from oil and the rest mostly from other sources. Our tax to gdp is 10%

Here is a list of countries with free education...and their tax to gdp ratios..

Denmark .. tax to gdp 44.9%
Germany too....tax to gdp 38.2%
Norway tax to gdp ratio 38.9%
Sweden tax to gdp ratio 43.9%

If we want to subsidise education, we have to all pay more in taxes. Here in Nigeria, less than 30% of people as at 2019 pay tax to federal and state coffers.

My parents were beneficiaries of awolowo's free education. Maybe They'd not have had the opportunities of going to school in their time. Awolowo spent a lot in subsidising education in his time. He didn't use oil money but cocoa proceeds. That's what he used to also build OAU. How many universities in Nigeria can stand the strength of OAU today? How much was the average salary of the few civil servants in those days? Their take home can't pay their children fees but awolowo made it free.

And is the SW still using cocoa money to pay for free education today? No. Because it would not be enough.

It worked in the 1950's and 60's because not too many people were in school, and our population was less than 60 million and we were no 2 in cocoa production globally...not now when we have 220 million people, and are not no 1 in cocoa or even no 2.

OAU when it started , there was enough money, and it was one of three universites in the SW....today there are probably 10-20 unis in the SW. With high populaitons.

I know you would disagree with me, but we can't fund universites on cocoa, cotton, palm oil and groundnut money like before. Esepcailly since we ain't producing too much (largely because we don't do mechanized farming).

Even the oil we pay for everything with...it can sustain a population of 10 million, not our large 200 million people.

But when we mention tax here, people shout poverty. So, fees.

South west isn't just developed today. Those who had the opportunity of going to school due to free education made it happen. They became successful and the property got spread everywhere. Many non yorubas had to change their names to yoruba to benefit from free education. That's what education can do. Let them upgrade our universities first, increase budget for it too to cober staff salaries, then it wouid be logical when the govt says they're reviewing fees and not in the way that it will hurt parents.

And they had free education because they could afford it, and because not too many people went to university (by 1972, our unis had an average of 3000 students each, and there were 6 of them, 3 in the SW).

Not now.

UK used to do free education once upon a time...back in the 1950's when there were 2 % of young people in university. Now? They use loans and grants, and fees are high .

It's very obvious that Yo una students are paying lesser tuition fees and all universities in the west are all exempt s because of their low tuition fees. Agbado and cassava crew. Hehehehe

Under Military rule, student unions suffered a lot.

For some reason, Nigerians expect world class education on fees of less than 50000 naira, which is not up to 50 dollars, and expect their universities' to be well equipped like the foreign university.

Meanwhile abroad, university students pay for fees by loans and grants, or their parents pay for it by heavy duty tax rates.

UN got 25 billion naira this year. Sounds a lot, until you realize that is just 31 million dollars. Some foreign universites spend up to 100 million if not more as budget, yet we think that with 31 million we can be like 100million university? Okay.

In 2013, ASUU met with FG for an update about the 2009 agreement wherein 1.5 trillion was supposed to be paid for universites in extra funding over 2 years. Government told them such money was not available. Result...fee increases the following year.
