LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT

MINISTRY OF HEALTH

PRESS STATEMENT

RE: MASS BURIAL OF ENDSARS VICTIMS (MISCHIEF MAKERS AT WORK).

The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to some social media publications about a purported mass burial plan for casualties of the 2020 #EndSARS incident. Peddlers of the news are deliberately misinterpreting and sensationalizing a letter from the Lagos State Government Public Procurement Agency titled: Letter of No Objection – Mass Burial for the 103, the Year 2020 ENDSARS victims, to misinform the public, stir public sentiment and cause public disaffection against the Lagos State Government.

It is public knowledge that the year 2020 #EndSARS crisis that snowballed into violence in many parts of Lagos recorded casualties in different areas of the State and NOT from the Lekki Toll Gate as being inferred in the mischievous publications.

For the records, the Lagos State Environmental Health Unit (SEHMU) picked up bodies in the aftermath of #EndSARS violence and community clashes at Fagba, Ketu, Ikorodu, Orile, Ajegunle, Abule-Egba, Ikeja, Ojota, Ekoro, Ogba, Isolo and Ajah areas of Lagos State. There was also a jailbreak at Ikoyi Prison. The 103 casualties mentioned in the document were from these incidents and NOT from Lekki Toll-gate as being alleged. For the avoidance of doubt, no body was retrieved from the Lekki Toll Gate incident.

Contrary to disingenuous narrative weaved around the recently approved mass burial, the #EndSARs Panel subpoenaed the Lagos State chief pathologist to produce full records of unclaimed bodies of dead deposited with state central morgue during the days immediately preceding and following the event at Lekki tollgate on 20/10/20.

The list with their autopsies of provable cause and circumstances of death were duly submitted and testified to before the panel. This subpoena was at the request of lawyers who represented #EndSARS protesters and the chief pathologist complied. There was not a single finding in the report or ensuing white paper attributing the death of any named citizen listed in the autopsy to the Lekki incident.

In the aftermath of the #EndSARS violence, the office of the Chief Coroner invited members of the public through public adverts and announcement (November 18,2020, Punch and November 19,2020 THISDAY) who had lost loved ones or whose relatives had been declared missing between 19th and 27th October 2020 from various clashes as mentioned above, to contact the department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) to help with identification of these casualties deposited in State-owned morgues. Relatives were to undergo DNA tests for identification purposes. It is important to state categorically that nobody responded to claim any of the bodies.

However, after almost three years, the bodies remain unclaimed, adding to the congestion of the morgues. This spurred the need to decongest the morgues - a procedure that follows very careful medical and legal guidelines in the event that a relative may still turn up to claim a lost relative years after the incident.

The Government, therefore, appeals to social media rumour mongers to please allow the hapless families of the unclaimed loved ones a deserved closure.

Dr Olusegun Ogboye
Permanent Secretary
Ministry of Health
July 23, 2023.

I pray Lagos State don't have a weak man as Gov. Sanwo-Olu again. Gov. Sanwo-Olu is too weak for a state like Lagos.

Meanwhile, explanation upon explanation is not needed again.

Majority of those victims of d endsars protest were the fallout of the fake news carried by d likes of dj switch and other enemies of the state.

The fake news led to d wanton destruction of lives and properties. Till tmr they've not bn able to provide any evidence of 'massacre' on lekki bridge that night neither have they able to provide a single relative of those massacred.

The place in their backyard where there were evidences of massacre, they pretended it didn't happen.

Ndi Umu Ekwensus.

Leave plenty talk.. tell your Governor to wise up and embrace Yoruba identity. It's time to drop the woke city nonsense.
Some unfortunate ones are hell bent on turning Lagos upside down to score cheap political points. It's time to guard everything concerning Lagos jealously from outsiders. Give Yorubas and other indigenes all the positions up till cleaner and watch the madness die natural death.

Remember the Igbo lawmaker that erected billboard warning likes of Phyno and Flavour to stay off her state and go protest in their state of origin?.. That's is the kind of treatment outsiders should be getting in Lagos.

It is truly disheartening to hear about the approval of a mass burial for the 103 victims of the EndSARS protests. This is a grim reminder of the deep pain and tragedy that unfolded during those dark days. Every life lost deserves to be honored and mourned individually, with proper respect and dignity. A mass burial seems to lack empathy and compassion for the families who are already grieving and seeking closure. It is crucial for the government to conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding these deaths and bring those responsible to justice. Additionally, the government should provide support to the affected families and ensure that they are provided with the necessary assistance during this difficult time.

I thought the Lagos State government recently adopted yourba as means of communicating to their indigenes, why are they now using English to address them?

I no talk am.

Those who believed in the acclaimed Lekki massacre and also those who swallowed the 103 death should check themselves up at the nearest rehabilitation center. Lots are wrong with them without consciously knowing

Well, it has been three years, the announcements have been made, and the corpses have been in mortuary for long.

Lagos is even nice. Some states won't wait for up to one year before they are burying unclaimed bodies.

I believed their were killings during the end sars protest, whether there was a massacre is another thing.

But to be fair to the Sanwo Olu led government, they did everything to prevent the ugly situation. Before the night of October 20th 2020, Sars had been banned. The Governor had also visited the venue of the protest twice and engaged the protesters, someone even called him 'were' on one of such occasions. What else does anyone thinks should have been done, that was not done?

At some point every protest have to come to an end to make for progress but of course the end sars protest had political colouration and some misguided youths allowed themselves to be used to put the government in a very difficult situation.

It is my take that on the night of October 20th, there was no reason for anyone to still be on the protest ground, considering a curfew have been declared also. It does not matter how aggrieved you are with the government, you have to apply reason when engaging the government.

As you dragged the government for the end sars killings you have to dragged the leaders and organisers of the protest too who do not know at what point to retreat and fight another day, thereby leading countless youths to their untimely death. Why did not any of the big names of the protest lose their lives?

We must heal from all of these end sars misfortune and move on please.

So, the government is admitting that the letter is authentic and that at least 103 people were killed during the protest

And why did they wait until after 2023 election before burying them?

Now I am forced to believe that the Lekki tollgate massacre actually happened cry

Is mass burial that expensive?

61m to bury 103 people? Are they buying gold caskets? Can't their body be released to anatomy Labs for science improvement?

This is a waste of scarce resources.

Most of the victims of EndSARS in lekki was cleared and carried away by soldiers to cover up the atrocities
If any dead body was retrieved anywhere in lagos within that period then it's EndSARS victims
