Tech is just a means to an end…most unemployed people are able to get themselves something through tech.

I think Tech these days should be learnt with other skills, like accounting/finance, project management, business analysis, system engineering, physical security integration, HR, Marketing, SCM etc.

My 2 cent.

You are right.

Tech industry is already saturated as we speak, though I believe there is still space for any one who can persevere and distinguish himself.

Secondly, the industry is fast paced so much that a skill you learnt today can become obsolete tomorrow, no, thanks to AI.
God bless you for this the rate of labour turnover in giant tech company is so alarming skills becoming obsolete in less than 5 years is not worth investing on for sustainability on a long run.

I've been telling my friends the tech bubble will soon burst and its already evident - nowadays you can come across jobs for developers with pay as low as 100k ...unthinkable 3 years ago.

As highlighted by someone above, tech is a means to an end.

Example is our online pharmacy consultation platform reaching out to distance clients.

How many of these unemployed Nigerians can use Microsoft Word?
You’re making it sound like everyone wants to be in tech in Nigeria. Like I said, you are either good enough for the role or not, no in-between. And to be that good, you’ll have to put your time and resources, eg. money for data and electricity. Finally, Tech is all about creativity.

We're saying the same thing.
My point still remains that even if a large majority of unemployed Nigerians had decent tech skills and could compete on with IT folks from advanced countries, the problem of unemployment would still be the same.

Tech cannot simply absorb all the unemployed youths we have

Tech Industry is saturated...lol. By who??
Go and check how many tech jobs are being advertised everyday on LinkedIn. You see this tech ish? The level of commitment needed to even have a taste of it's reward/benefits, most Nigerians are not willing to make that sacrifice.

What tech industry?

The best you can do is research skills needed abroad. And train for it.

Don't fall into the hype of local tech industry. Most depend on outsourced solutions from India. Except you want to face the same fate that the 14 Nigerian graduates in this video: the craziest job stories you've never heard are facing.

So, you know a lot of Indians are employed by the tech industry. Why can't Nigerians get the same skills. The world is changing rapidly, you can even live in Nigeria and work for a company in Europe or the U.S.A
Just have the skills needed.

We need a lot of awareness for our youths not this type of negative misinformation by the OP. Asians are making tons of money from IT, Nigerians are very smart, I am sure they can do the same.

Your opinion is valid and correct but you're coming at it from an individualistic standpoint. Of course any tech-inclined person who knows his onions cannot complain about lack of jobs (poor pay, maybe; but a lack of jobs? nahh).

I'm just saying that tech (both domestic and foreign roles) cannot absorb the humongous number of unemployed Nigerians.
The entire nature of the tech industry is designed to only favour a select few deemed the "best of the best".

Why should tech employ every unemployed Nigerian? Is every unemployed Nigerian/individual interested in a career in tech? What about other industries? There is nothing like the "best of the best" in many careers that provide job opportunities, save for a very few ones in embedded engineering and maybe semiconductors (microchips). Nigeria needs to fix her extremely poor and virtually non-existing infrastructure and that means getting the politics right first. And fixing politics means electing the right people into elective positions and respecting the rules of law.

With electricity and road infrastructure fixed, those two alone can help reduce this "humongous unemployment".

IT is just one sector of the economy. I don't believe you think everyone will work in IT. It doesn't make any sense just like it wouldn't make any sense if every Indian is a rice farmer.

True points. But all in all, job is job. whatever job one does in this life is to secure a means of livelihood so as to survive in life, cater for your family, to have money.

You and i are exactly on the same page.
I wrote the article to highlight the unrealistic expectations people place on tech as a solution to Nigeria's unemployment crisis.

In my conclusion i suggested that other measures such as what you suggested should be put in place by the government.

There are over 60 Million unemployed and soon to be employed youths in Nigeria... How many of them are in tech that's making you create threads?!!

Do you know how many Asians and Americans are into various areas of tech, yet their tech industries are nowhere near saturated?!!

It takes more than trends to excel in any field, and as we speak there are more fields springing up... The revolution hasn't even started globally.

I agree that Nigerians tend to bullrush anything trending, but the weeds will always get separated from the wheat.

Only those truly gifted and passionate about tech will succeed there.

How many of those jobs are willing to pay what's due!

The IT industry is done already. The good old days are gone and just the crumbs are left!

With competent cheap labour littering India, Pakistan and Lebanon, It will only get worse.

If you quite aware, even Nigerian and American multinationals have started exporting jobs to those cheap labour destination.

I disagree with everything except the infrastructural gaps and where you’re implying that Naija isn’t big in tech as the west and Asia.
Tech is very wide and there’s no in between. You’re either good enough or not, and you’re not limited to Nigeria. Decent tech guys in naija are not that much. Tech skills take time and resources. The question is this, are you decent enough to land that tech job?!

Everybody na UI/UX, Data Analyst and Product Manager grin

Unittyy:
It baffles me how unemployed and frustrated graduate think they can hurriedly take some online courses in Coursera, Udemy, Utiva within 3 - 6 months and become programmers, data analyst etc. Tech is still paying big time but the issue is that the street is littered with mediocre self acclaimed tech people who have nothing to offer.

By the way... There are more Nigerians hustling offline than online. Research this.

Please, name one area of human capital endeavor that isn't 'saturated'. Name just one.

Even Crime is fully saturated! Terrorism, same thing.

Yet, people who know what they are doing will keep succeeding online and offline.

I hate it when you people demonize everything and discourage everyone... Till date, people are still succeeding in the demonized Cryptocurrency world.

Tech will never favor everyone, no matter how they join the bandwagon... Those who are truly called to it will always rise above the crowd.

Same thing goes for Carpentry, Tailoring, Car wash, Farming, etc.

It's always been very funny to me when people come with pitchforks to attack the tech industry in Nigeria like it's a bubble or other nonsense.

Electrical, mechanical and petroleum engineering jobs that have been seriously bastardized with barely any job openings except being a maths teacher for private secondary schools, where are the articles?

Law as a course where over 70% of the graduates end up selling imported goods from china, where are the articles?

Aside from the healthcare, every field that was once lucrative has little to nothing to offer new graduates and no one talks about it

But for tech every ekuke with internet connection go dey open their silly little mouth dey shout "it is overrated".

Ogbeni shut the fûck up and do whatever it is you want to do. Una body odor dey disturb the environment.
honestly the comments here just demoralize me..... I've started learning online...I plan to register on Aptech before the year ends for web development with python.... I'm just feeling discouraged now... please 🙏 advice me
