Thank you my brother, buying Naija used cars na wahala.
Most times when u don reach house u go come begin dey see why the owner sell am, and we don't have records like some foreign used cars that the history is there.
The owner won't dare mention any of the faults to you and if u notice any by yourself they will lie that it just started, wasn't like that before.
To worsen the whole thing, agents don't care about making proper inspection, they are only interested in getting buyer and get their cut even if the car no reach house dat wan na ur business.
They will sweet tongue you into paying once you pay OYO now ur name, even if you go with mechanics there are some errors you won't still notice until you start using the car.

You have spoken well.

One guy on nairaland narrated his experience with a Lexus ES350. The car was draining battery. He buys a new battery, two weeks later, battery is dead. He spent a lot of money chasing the problem till he got tired and sold it to the next unfortunate buyer. Even if you carry 10 mechanics to inspect it, they won't detect the issue.

When buying a car especially if it's Nigeria used, na to prepare for the worst.

The one wey dey even shock me is how greedy and unreasonable our people can be. They never bother to maintain the cars but are quick to slam a ridiculous amount of money on it when it's time to sell.

Inasmuch as I would have loved to engaged you on this, I would rather not because by the time I'm done you would have regretted making such comment here.

Dangote employed 11,000 bla bla bla...

If your so call good government had invested in our tertiary education would there had been any need for brain drain? Unqualified graduates or high unemployment rate which has lead to all the current problems and security crisis currently bedeviling us as a country?
Kidnapping everywhere, oloshoes everywhere on the streets, even police officers are into prostitution because no pay, youths are into drugs, rape, cultism, all kinds of vices now abide in our society across the borders of our dear nation and you dare open your stinking mouth to say it's not about bad government. I pity you!

Our parents who had ordinary Primary 6 Certificate are far better than our current graduates from the best federal universities in Nigeria, Why? Colonial education and vocational training.

How many of our doctors, engineers or scientists are employable?

How much was budgeted to education in the last 8yrs since GEJ left office?

Why has ASUU strike become a part of our curriculum?
See person wey spend 9 whole years studying ordinary computer science that would take an Illori student 3yrs is talking. I have 2 jobs, I earn 6 figures... What are you doing with 2 jobs? With other sides hustles? Guy! Just 1 good job is more than enough, you're here making a fool of yourself with your 50k minimum wage job.

Guy, the government have the largest blame here to take because they neglected education since after independent chasing after their greed. Simple!

Why are they sending their children abroad to study and bring them back home to occupy the best positions in top companies? Even your Uncle MC. Oluomo that was snatching ballot boxe and shouting at his PU in the last election, did you not see his kids graduating from one of the best universities in the world? Ur papa get money to even do passport for you to visit ordinary America embassy let alone send you to study abroad?

Ordinary fuel #568 wey ur old man dey sell now no be him you dey shout so?.when last you in your generator for house when light no dey? Dey here dey shout emilokan! Rubbish!!

Don't worry wait to see their names in DPR, NNPC, EXMobil, SHELL, ZENITH BANK only to mention a few soon, na that time your eyes go clear say you don't need skills and 2 jobs with some side hustles like Uber.

Watin concern DPR staff with Uber driving as side hustle?

Mteeech!

grin grin

Remember I'm the one who talked sense into your head before you started selling cars as side hustle. You used to pride picking up big men's wife at midnight while your own wife lacked warmth. Remember how I warned you I was going to demoralize you and you disappeared after our e-brawl here only to return after about 2 months saying you've switched to selling cars. Remember I even had to check on you to see if I haven't done too much. Remember I even warned you before we started the other day.

If you want to head that way again, I'm fully game but be careful what you might be getting yourself into.

Bro non is better either ways. They're both used cars, simple!

I have also sold a 2007 Corolla sport to a client who came from the norther part to Lagos, these Hausa guys sabi car na we dey think say them be mumu Hausa sabi pass we southerners.

They bought 2 units, on their way back to the north the sport 07 knock engine for sagamu. The dealer had to replaced the engine with a tokunbo one the next day.

Even brand new vehicles are not left out.

A car was bought from a well reputable company here in Lagos, 10 units... On their way to PH to deliver the vehicle on among them knock engine after a flash of the oil sensor light... They had to replace the car with apology and other expenses.

We have to understand these things are machines and chances of failure are factored in during manufacturing.

The main thing is your budget.
You wey buy a 2006 Corolla registered for 3m now can never be the same with one that bought for 1.4m, never!!

Yeah I quite get your point, but we can't shy away from admitting that Nigerians don't try when it comes to maintenance.
Besides roads may not be as bad as it is here over there, how many of those cars used here can you be able to get their history but almost every car coming have maintenance records and you can track them.
Even a car that didn't start oyibo will inscribe it on the body before shipping but you see our people they can hardly be as honest and fair as those Guys over there.

I told somebody something, I will buy a regular car used in America or Canada for 8 years than buy same car bought brand new here used for 5 years.
Unless I know the owner and know him to be good when it comes to car maintenance, I know what I am talking about.
I have been privileged to handle a lot of cars and I can always see the difference, just bring in like 10 cars and watch them after 6 months.
Even the paints (only them knows how they produce their paints) will fade and you may likely hear different manner of noise, abi na fake parts, oil or bad fuels we wan talk about?

My Guy a dealer buy car F150 but everything was normal as we test drive, put machine and there was no check engine lights or whatsoever lights on the dashboard.
But on our way back the steering became as strong and stiff as if you're driving a trailer, we called the man he said he knows nothing about it that he even bought the car for personal use.
We spent days at ojuelegba trying to sort the issue, bought different steering racks and pumps even bought one brand new.
Until we took it to one Guy that said we should go and come back but before we go that his pannel beater will check if their is catalyst so we don't come and say he removed it.
That he has experienced it several times, we argued that the car is toks and no lights but the Guy insist then we paid the panel and to our greatest fear no catalyst.
We end of fixing it the next day, but the technician couldn't notice all these before payments were made.

My brother bought an hyundia with same battery problem you mentioned in your post here....this is a direct Tokunbo car or not a naija used... He changed over 4 new batteries and countless numbers of sarpenter belt because the charging alternator just won't stop getting hot so making the belt to burn and cut off.

You're drifting away from the discussion chief.
So you know our roads are not good and you blaming the seller.
Why blame the seller because of inefficiency by the government to provide basic amenities and have a data base for every vehicles on their roads?

My point is both foreign used car and naija used cars have similar problem to watch out or tackle after purchase.

The only thing is one country is developed and the other is under-developing so you don't expect same result or products

If you have a good budget for a naija used you'll get a better car than a foreign used in some.cases. you will even agree with me that your budget is also a factor when buying a foreign used car.

So everything is about your pocket.

Give me 600k I'll get you a lemon limca benz
Give me 5m and I'll get you a Corolla with golden alloy rims

It's that simple.

I am not drifting Sir, we are still saying some thing.
The truth is you can't compare sleep with death, most of the cars used oversees can never be compare to the ones used here.
Yes there are still few Nigerians that takes care of thier cars, but the environment also plays a role.
For instance how many people even scan their cars before trying to fix anything, most times they com here and ask for suggestions then work on the things we suggest.
Again chances of getting good spare parts here is slim, how about the mechanics?
Many people can't afford the seasoned ones, the traffics and stress these cars experience here no be small.
I used ordinary paint as instance, compare the paints that comes with these vehicles to what we have here.
I know someone will argue there painters who are good, fine but what of the panel beaters that will work on the car?
They just do whatever they like so the painter can do his painting, that's why once I see a car painted in Naija I will always know.
But oyibo will change fenders, bummers or remove them to do proper work if need be, even their filler, gums are miles ahead of what we have here.
Bro na only few Naija cars can beat foreign used cars if we are to compare.

Trying out different steering racks must have been a nightmare. It is one of the most difficult jobs to do in a car.

Most catalysts are stolen before the vehicle arrives. Sometimes they cut out the entire exhaust and you'll spend hundreds of thousands of naira replacing it.

The business of selling cars whether Toks or Naija used is not for the faint hearted.

How was the steering stiffness resolved?

I agree in part.

Toks cars can have their own issues but by and large, your chances of getting a good car is higher with Toks than Naija used. Infact if you are buying a luxurious car or a vehicle with scarce parts, your best bet is Toks.

Until recently, there was a time most people didn't even entertain the idea of getting a Naija used car.

The current situation of the country is what's making Naija used cars the darling of everyone.
