Mehn, the speed at which the film hit $1bn is really shocking for me even tho I was very optimistic. A Billie in just over two weeks is bonkers.

It's also actually funny how 2023's highest grossing film would be a WOKE movie. grin grin

OPPENHEIMER

A detailed, explicit, technical and intriguing movie about a world turning historical event. The emotional weight, the directing, the acting (especially those of Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jnr, Florence Pugh, and Emily Blunt), the visual effects --- especially that of the explosion which detailed the energy balls, the glow, the fiery surface, and the energy particles as they reacted, interacted and coursed seamlessly --- were beautiful, they where pure art. One can't also overlook the musical theme before the launch of the atomic bomb... musical score that overwhelmed one with emotions... emotions of discomfort, tension, anticipation and excitement. Such added so much vibe and taste to the experience.

Aside from its Sci-fi theme, Christopher Nolan did an excellent job at detailing the background of Oppenheimer, the dramas in his life, his call to the Mahanttan Project, the process of the Mahanttan Project, the tension and emotions before the launch of the atomic bomb, the victory of the project's success, the regret and ripple effect of the catastrophic effect of the atomic bomb, the politics revolving around the atomic bomb, and finally the betrayal as a result of selfish political interest. Such detailed storytelling made the movie worth calling cinema worthy. Its three hours runtime was justified. I regard it as one of the best movies of 2023, an Oscar worthy movie.

My Rating: 9.3/10

So I'mma tryna tell me that Oppenheimer would have been a WB film if not for WB going south with their business partnership with Christopher Nolan. Aswear, Zaslav will be praying die by fire prayer against Killar πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

Talking about Christopher Nolan and WB, imagine Christopher Nolan or Zack Snyder directing an Injustice trilogy, an animated HBO MAX DCeased series and/ or an animated HBO MAX Doomsday Clock series.

What about the completion of the 300 trilogy but as an HBO MAX series, or rebooted clash/ wrath of the Titans HBO MAX series --- to fix the disappointment of the movie series, justice should be done.

HBO MAX will literally go up in flames πŸ™ƒ.

Dune 2 sure looks like another Billion dollar film this year.
Guarded optimism, then that film looks above $600-800mn. If it wants to overperform and I have a feeling it would cos it also has IMAX exclusive for 6 weeks!! Then a billion surely is in sight.

I ALWAYS told people WB comeback later this year...them think say na joke.

That Jason Kilar na very stupid executive honestly.
He messed up The Batman's gross. Sabotaged Dune. Lost Nolan as well as Legendary β€”the owners of the Godzilla franchise. After next year's Godzilla and Kong movies Legendary is moving most probably to Universal.

Oppenheimer also had the benefit of being comarketed with BARBIE, vice versa.
Those numerous internet memes did a whole lot of marketing and exposure for both films.

Top tier stuff indeed. The goat for me was Ryan Gosling. I never knew Armstrong, but I'm 100% sure Gosling portrayed him to perfection. The emotions, expressions damn! Method acting at it's finest.

Maann You know this. Bio-pics and huge titular characters usually brings out the best of method actors akin to the performance of Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour (2017) and Heath Ledger as "The Joker in TDK (2008). But method meniacs scare the hell out of me! lol, They take the role too seriously, and sometimes interfering with their real life and mental health.

The cinematography was on another level, the music score, the symphony to be precise was rhythmic and euphonious. The story, the sequence with which it was told was perfect......The movie is what i call perfection, it's up there with Gravity & The Martian.

Gbam! The cinematography was A1 and the score was heavenly! A perfect mix to horne home the entire narrative. Peep shots from the cinematography below 🌟🌟😩 and "The Landing" score is still one of my favorite lullabies till date πŸ‚

The HBO max simul theatrical same day release really did hurt the part 1 numbers in 2021, I don't think it even grossed up to $500m. I just hope WB don't make the same mistake again.

It made around $400mn in 2021. That was bonkers if you ask me despite day and date release. Imagine if no HBOMax, the movie would have done $600mn.

That's the main reason I'm pegging the film from $600mn+ upwards. The added exposure, more big wig casts and Dennis Villeneuve brilliance with that beautiful visuals all the more strengthens the movie's position as a billion dollar contender.
It could also challenge for Best Picture too, so WB would have a better second half.

Yeah $400M in "crazy post covid lockdown" times in retrospect was decent.

Part 2 should do decent numbers too, it's one of the most anticipated flicks out this year, other titles out around that time too might contribute if they are big as well. But barring a mad movie goers apathy, it should fare decently.

lol A fantasy winning best picture might be a pipe dream, as you rightly said, it might be a contender, but the academy will rather give it to an artsy flick that panders to one of the numerous woke agendas.

In as much as Killar made numerous terrible choices, he also had his good moments... moments like numerous Oscars, growth of HBO MAX from 20M subscribers as of January 2021 to 74M subscribers by December 2021 (something Zaslav is still struggling to replicate), making good revenues (profits not included) for Warner Media in 2020 and 2021 despite the controversies and instability that rocked the company likewise Covid-19 etc.

Dude was a hybrid executive --- good and bad.

As for Dune, the hybrid release was the best option. What were the odds the movie would have performed well in cinema exclusively, considering how volatile things or the cinematic market was during Covid-19 2021?
Rather than losing or probably losing out at the box office, the hybrid was okay. With such model, Dune got to make the little it could make at the box office while simultaneously contributing towards the growth of HBO MAX.

As for Batman, Nolan, and Legendary Pictures, those ones are on him. He messed up big time.

Yep, it's the most anticipated movie for the last half of the year.

Lord of The Rings won Best Picture in 2003.
Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water won Best Picture and Best Director as well as leading 13 nominations in 2018.

I finished watching it this evening and I can't really see anything that smells Best Picture in it.
It's a good movie but Best Picture ain't it.

Anyways, Oppenheimer is in the lead to win it, before Martin Scorsese's Killers of The Flower Moon comes for it.

@ bolded, are you talking about Shape of Water? The best picture win had a silly "back story agenda" to it lol. It was mesh in "Pan's Labyrinth" snob in 2006. I thought "Three billboards outside ebbing Missouri" deserved it that year. Funny enough Sally Hawkins performance was the best thing about the movie and she didn't scope best actress.

Darkest Hour (2017)..... 9/10

Gary Oldman once again delivering masterpiece performance of delight. He's definitely getting into my favourite old men actors list.

Premium performance portraying wartime British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to perfection. The voice acting, the method acting, making me believe he was really that old. Deserved Best Actor win at the Academy.
Ben Mendelsohn with a decent performance as King George VI.

The film follows Winston Churchill as he's task with leading the war cabinet during the outbreak of WWII after Hitler invaded Europe in 1940. The race for time to defend France and secure Britain ensues. Every hour that ticks counts a desperate move by all state actors to wish away the fate that awaits them as no one could stop Hitler blazing through Europe with his Panzer tanks.

The Cinematography and camera movement was premium with carefully planned interesting framing and composition; dialogue was pristine as well. Great score that captures the mood of the atmosphere. Premium tier all encompassing acting.

One thing I love about this movie is that it delicately captures the emotions and frenetic indoor meetings to turn the tide amidst the elite and the proletariat. And it was fitting for Winston getting the approval and courage from the people to go on with his bold decisions amidst disapproval from his cabinet members.
Somehow the film manages to keep you in the story and invested without even showing battle sequences throughout the war. It's one weird WW2 movie for that without showing the frontlines and focusing on indoor politicking and machinations and that's what makes it unique from other war movies.

Joe Wright cooked here with this war thriller. Focus Features under Universal is also one mad powerhouse in arthouse masterpieces like these. Kudos to them.

The scene below got me in fits of laughter for 5 mins, continuously repeating that dialogue over and over. grin grin The voice wey the werey use take talk the thing sef dey funny me.

The fact is, they don't follow a set rules, each year they just pander to the "agenda" that is loudest and call it a day. The 2016 best actor win for Leonardo DiCaprio was basically a pity award for previous years of neglect whilst overlooking Matt Damon for "The Martian" and Micheal Fassbender for "Steve Jobs". "Green Book" winning best picture over "Roma" is still a mystery, because the "race agenda" was in play, If EEAAO was done by an all black cast, i seriously doubt if it could have gotten best picture because Jordan Peele made a similar socially conscious movie in "Get out" and it was overlooked, and who could forget!, My fave none sense that Oscar has done, is given Roman Polanski best director in absentia for the "The Pianist", I mean, the man admitted to some serious crimes and fled the country before he could be indicted, he couldn't even enter the country let alone , attend the ceremony 😭😭.

I used like 3 days to watch the film fully. I started it, it was going smoothly but I had to discontinue cos of the nudity and younger siblings trying to join me watch my shΓ―t. Na to switch am to uninteresting anime dey won't like sure pass. Before I swapped to Darkest Hour and watched that at a go.

I had been having the feeling of not seeing anything special in The Shape of Water and a bit surprising for me cos it was a Best Picture nominee, not knowing it actually won it. I was really feeling weird about myself before I stumbled upon an article with list of all the Best Picture Winners in the last 15years.
In the Den of Geek article I later saw how they said it was a shock for many people seeing the movie win Best Picture that year especially in the middle of fierce competition with at least 3 movies deemed above it. That's when I knew I wasn't alone.

Yeah, the Oscars are a set of wild bunch. I thought they moved with the flow in recent years only to find out they've been moving with the flow for decades. Yeah, I heard Michael Fassbender was the easiest choice for Best Actor that year.
I was surprised with Roma losing Best Picture that year cos I knew it was the overwhelming favourite in awards season. Tho I'm yet to watch it.

It's that race agenda that's in play that always make me annoyed anytime I see Black Panther up for Best Picture nomination. That film had no single
business being in that category that year. It's betters were miles ahead and was an insult.

Yeah, I hear the Roman Polanski drama almost everytime. I think I heard he was an Academy member sef. Funnily enough most times when I see "The Pianist" I always thought it was directed by Jane Campion.

Many people don't take Oscars seriously these days that's why their viewership numbers continue to tank. It's just used as recognition for knowing the best of the best in the industry these days and bragging rights for fans.

I swear na serious work to actually watch them. I was just doing light curation for fun in the morning thinking it won't take 15mins, before I knew it I was deep 2hr30mins curating and formulating competitive arguments simultaneously.
This is not the only list sef, I still got nominees and many I haven't grouped yet. Will to curate came when two days ago I struggled to chose what to download for 30mins in the night... I had limited data and had to choose what stays and goes.
I just did the curation to make my downloads simpler and more thoughtful.

Bruv MIUI and it's technicalities is a pain in the arse at times bro. They have great all round devices but optimization na serious issue. So tey some people are scared of android updates. 😭😭
It's a while ago I noticed and I just swapped to using other rather generic note apps (Word Counter).
I'm also thinking of leaving MIUI but that Poco F5 is really tempting me. Mad performance.

I'm looking at Google Pixel but the issue is they don't have raw performance or specs rich at Xiaomi level affordable price range. And there's the issue of Google tightening security and restrictions with recent updates and the support for some third party APKs.
I've thought of other brands too with more pure android feel like Oppo. But most of their compelling devices are usually powered by Mediatek chips.
