Other business people can quickly adjust their charges and fee to meet whatever the prevailing economic realities are.

Not same for salary earners.

Salary increase may take long to come for those who get it. And in most cases, the increment won't do much.

Good day, is it not when salary is paid that workers will have to patronize business owners?

In terms of business, there are people who deals on basic goods like food stuffs, drugs, transportation etc and non-basic goods such as shoes, cars, vacation etc.

No one can do without basic goods/needs but non-basic goods can wait ok( i have about 12 foot wears, i may not buy any footwear till next year),

The truth remains that most businesses who are into non-basic goods are suffering more than salary earners, thank you.

My friend works in a private organization where he’s paid 80k per month. It was actually increased from 69 to 80k after the first fuel hike. The company can’t do another increment after the second hike meanwhile, his transport fare had increased by another 25%.

He works from Monday to Saturday.

His transport fare to and from work is 1500 daily excluding feeding. Dude spends an average of 3k daily for TP and feeding.

Tell me, what is his gain?

I agreed with you completely. Even as a business owner, you can't just increase prices cos of inflation cos your clients/customer will find alternatives to your services but salary earners are had hit when it comes to inflation.
I used to work for coca-cola and you get $.5 an hour pay increase yearly but price of bag of shrimp from Walmart goes from $9 to $14 in less than 2 years and you beginning to ask yourself if you actually getting a pay raise cos you are poorer every year compare to previous year. Starting a business open doors but inflation is worse than the devil for real.

nedekid:

You are right business people can adjust, but they too have limitations. When they raise prices, can people pay? Majority of their customers are salary people.
I will give two examples,

1. DSTV Premium back in 2013 was ₦7000 or $50 @₦140.
Today, DSTV premium is ₦24500 equivalent to $30 @₦800.

I used to charge 50k for a service I provided few years ago. It gave me $354.
Today, I charge 140k which gives me $175. If I charge 283k to give me equivalent of what I earned in $$ before, Who go fit pay?
Meanwhile cost of equipment keep skyrocketing due to the exchange rate, clearing fees. How do we replace those tools of trade?

I have a friend who is into car business and he has already closed shop. Borrow money import cars but nobody buys it for months. Factor interest on borrowed capital, depreciation and you're in trouble. Business that provide non essential services and the worst hit in inflation period, followed by salary earners.

April396949:
Salary earners are often the hardest hit by inflation because their incomes are typically fixed or increase at a slower rate compared to other segments of the population. While prices of goods and services rise due to inflation, salary earners' purchasing power diminishes over time. This can lead to a decline in their standard of living as they struggle to meet their increasing expenses with their stagnant incomes. Additionally, salary earners may not have the flexibility to switch jobs or negotiate higher wages easily, further exacerbating the impact of inflation on their financial well-being. Consequently, inflation disproportionately affects salary earners, making it crucial for policymakers and businesses to consider strategies to address this issue and ensure fair compensation for the challenges they face.

Grammar go too sweet for your mouth. All your points are valid.

Huawei's Workers Cries Out Over Poor Working Condition As Fuel Subsidy Removal Bits Hard

Huawei, being one of the major employer of labour in telecom sectors, appears to have created an unhealthy condition between staff and outsource which seems to have seriously affected workers welfare of late. Despite the fact that the company is operating on outsource ratio and expatriate to local employee ratio, the level of degradation in remuneration standard has gotten worse.

Workers have been clamouring for upward adjustment of salary structure since the start of Covid-l9 and the effect on the economy but their demands to yield no result. It's a herculean task to increase salaries of long term employees but Huawei brings in graduate trainees that earn btw 400-450k monthly and this same old employees (with some earning below 200k for more than 8 yrs) will have to train them.

Also the management are yet to look into the critical impact of the fuel subsidy removal and how it will affect the workers. Recall that since May 29 when the fuel subsidy removal was announced by President Bola Tinubu, the bulk of HUAWEI employees that are outsourced have engaged Huawei management on the review of their remuneration in line with the current economic reality but it has yielded no positive results.

Hybrid work hours has also been vehemently rejected by Huawei management without any empathy on what cost of transportation has caused.

Employees have been clamoring for salary increment even before the subsidy removal but it was unfortunate that only 30k was eventually added to the salary of some staffs after deduction from outsource vendors according to an employee of 8yrs with RGS global company.

A lot of staffs have been resigning when any opportunity pops up but the rest are stuck with Huawei considering the fact that the organization have a monopoly of handling Services for all network operators in Nigeria. So if you are a transmission operations Engineer you must work with Huawei.

This has led to Huawei enslaving staffs and paying salaries that can't sustain them based on the reality on ground in Nigeria. This is an act of wickedness and it is at this junction that the Federal Government must intervene in order to prevent Huawei from maltreating their staff.

Interestingly, most of the staff are contract staff and are paid peanuts with reduced leave of 10 working days for outsourced staff compared to their counterpart, who are full time staff, that enjoy 15 working days leave.

Bizarrely enough, employees are not allowed to have a union. It's a shame that the Chinese owned Huawei are treating our highly skilled labour force like slaves all because of the monopoly they have on telecommunications Managed Services in Nigeria.

Huawei are yet to inform their employees that a token of 30k monthly payment will be added as palliative to cushion the hardship being felt by the removal of fuel subsidy.

This is complete lack of human feelings from the part of Huawei as cost of living have become unbearable in addition with the high cost of transportation that seem to have taken a lot from many of the staff.

Sad enough, Huawei have refused to review the take home of long term employees that are the pillar of their operations but prefer to bring in new employees and pay them well.

More so, people running four-day shift have resulted to sleeping in the office in a bid to save cost of
transportation and go home only when they go off-duty at the end of their shift. Most of the workers are finding it difficult to meet up with their daily obligations.

Finally, we are appealing to the government to break this monopoly and ensure standard labour practices are being followed in Huawei.

You keep talking about salary earners, what about the millions of Nigerians who have no jobs.
Even small and medium scale businesses are suffering because the level of competition is so high, cost of production keeps rising; and the demand for their products is falling because the purchasing power of consumers has been drastically reduced.
Everybody in Nigeria is feeling this unexpected, but avoidable heat!!!!

Everybody is hit, even the business owner. If you own a business and your every means of production increase, you increase your price and expect the salary earners who haven't had theirs increased to come and patronise you. Many of them come begging you for credits they can't pay back. When you insist on no credit, your sale plummeted.
