Everyone Is A Thief. Help !!! by MarvyWhiz(op): 5:08pm On Aug 06, 2023
My story begins last week, Saturday, when I received a message on Jiji from someone posing as a woman. She wanted to buy my Nintendo Switch Lite, which I had listed in my ad space. She claimed it was for her son and requested to meet that evening for the transaction. I explained that I couldn't make it that night but offered to meet at my place if it was urgent. We ended our communication for the day.

On Sunday, the same person texted me again, asking me to come over, and offered to pay for my transportation fare. She mentioned trying my number multiple times without success, I provided an alternative number, which according to her also didn't work. She requested that I meet her husband at Gwarimpa (Citec) to assess the product and make the payment.

After some thought, I decided to go to the meeting place. Upon arriving, I waited for about 15 minutes until a middle-aged man called me and confirmed his presence. We exchanged pleasantries, and he inspected the console just as I had advertised. He then gave it to a little boy who accompanied him and proceeded to make the payment. He inquired about my transportation fare, and I mentioned 1k. He generously added an additional 1k, for which I thanked him. I provided my Chipper Cash account for a quick transfer and opened my bank app to refresh it.

After approximately 3 minutes, I still hadn't received the payment alert. He expressed his need to leave as he had taken time off from work to meet me (claiming to be a soldier). I requested a moment to wait for the alert, but despite my efforts to refresh, no payment came through. He insisted that he had sent the money and asked me to take his picture as a sign of trust. He pleaded with me to show him some sympathy as he was being held back. After about 2 more minutes of checking, I reluctantly accepted that he could leave and took a picture of the debit alert. He assured me that he would refund the money if it got returned to him.

As he left in a Napep, I stayed at the gate, continually refreshing my account. However, it began to rain, so I sought shelter under a shed. While waiting, I Googled the alert issue and stumbled upon a post about a PAGA SCAM alert on Nairaland similar to my experience. https://www.nairaland.com/7724164/how-got-scammed-using-paga
It dawned on me that I had been conned, so I hurried to the police station to report the incident, where I provided a statement.

Subsequently, I found individuals on Nairaland (on that post) who claimed they could track accounts like these. I enlisted the services of one user with the username "thaikun15." He informed me that the process would take 3 to 5 days and charged me 5k. He requested an initial payment of 3k and the remaining 2k upon completion.

After waiting for the said 5 days without any response from "thaikun15," who came up with excuses, I reached out to another user named "Hope88." He claimed he could track the number from the same post. I narrated the entire incident to him, and he stated that his brother needed to be paid 1500 upfront. I offered to double the payment but requested proof first. He eventually provided certain information, including the supposed name of the scammer, his last known location, and last phone number called.

I reached out to the number and explained the situation to the person who confirmed the name and said the scammer arrived last night in Ijebu. He mentioned that the person came with a big bag and might be headed to Computer Village to sell the items inside. He expressed his willingness to help as he knew the scammer while he schooled in Abuja. Grateful for his assistance, I contacted the person who helped me track the number, thanked him, and paid him the requested N1,500.

Later, the person in Ijebu contacted me to report that the scammer had already left for Lagos, and he couldn't approach him. We had a lengthy conversation, and he expressed sympathy for my situation. When he revealed his name as Emmanuel, I was surprised since the person who tracked the supposed scammer's number also had the same name, Emmanuel. I requested to speak with the tracker over the phone, but he preferred to chat and claimed to be busy. Eventually, we spoke on the phone, and though he tried to disguise his voice, it sounded similar to the previous user, which raised suspicions.

Curious, I checked the Nairaland posts of the user "Hope88" and discovered that the same phone number he provided me belonged to him. I confronted him about this, but he denied it, stating that the account with the username "Emax132" was his real one. However, I had gathered sufficient proof to show otherwise.

Sadly, I haven't been able to trace the scammer yet and have lost money in the process of trying to track him down. It has been an agonizing week filled with depression, loss, and pain, especially since I needed the money for rent. The more people I have reached out for the help, the more they have tried to play on my grief.

The information I have about the scammer includes his number, 0913 859 8548, and Truecaller identifies him as "SUNUSI." If anyone can offer assistance, please reach out to me.

I know everything in the back of your mind was telling you that this was a scam the moment he pretended to want to leave and you didn’t get any money yet. Next time, trust your instincts!
Or was it the ‘little boy’ that did you in? 🙄

True I felt every bit of apprehension. I think I let him go because he said he was a soldier, he spoke in Hausa to the little boy and I felt like I held him unnecessarily. He had messaged me to come outside, so I had no thought he had the intention to defraud me. Even with taking his picture, I refused, I only wanted to sell my console and get my money... I didn't need his picture so I thought. So many signs I missed, too trusting to a fault.

they both did. The police was the first thing that came to mind, they took my statement and that's been it, I called on Tuesday this week and the inspector asked me to find a tracking means myself and get back to him. I know tracking the said person is almost impossible, I'm just holding on to any hope right now.
