To kill a Mockingbird (1962).

"To kill a Mockingbird, it's a sin itself, because all they do is sing their hearts to us"

Harper Lee's famous book screen adaptation is as powerful and thought provoking as the book with a fresh spin.

This coming of age and legal drama is set in the Depression era, in a fictitious town in Alabama, our central character is Atticus Finch, a lawyer and a single father with 2 young children, the first half focuses on their brilliant coming of age arc, that is heart rending and sets the right pace for the 2nd half.

The 2nd half is a gripping legal drama, that sees our central character appointed to defend a man of color accused of having carnal knowledge of a white woman, the case itself is touch and go giving the highly charged racial and social injustice against people of color in that era, so bad that in the great depression where poverty abounds, a white man and a black could both have one cent each but they are quite quite different, a seemingly clear day and night between "White poor and Black poor". There's is a brilliant court drama sequence with some profound monologue that adds to the richness of the narrative.

Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch is glue that holds both halves of the movie together, a timeless and well grounded performance, duly got the academy award for best actor that movie year. The other supporting cast did a great job as well, their is a debut casting for a certain young "Robert Duvall" 🤓 who is currently 92, just to tell you how old this flick is, all the more baffling how well it holds up even till today. pennywise in talking about a good cinematography in a black and white flick, but they seem to catch my fancy lately, the court room scenes had some beautiful shots in monochrome.

This belongs up there in the golden era of Hollywood, some describe it as arguably one of the best court dramas ever. Now whilst i can't promise that, it is a "happy" flick, but there is a clear, brilliant, and poignant message at the end that ties it all up cleverly and rewards the effort to see it, in full and satisfying measure.

Top Top shelf Material.🌟

9/10.

It's not unusual for females to pick Puss over Spiderman. They don't really care about comic book characters

Ah.

But it depends on the females.

Nowadays cool babies watch anime and are comic geeks.

Unlike some Iyaloja agba market women I know.

which villain?

Spot has no character arc tho

Miguel isn't a villain...more of an Antagonist imo...

And so far I support him...unless proven otherwise...
He's acting rationally so far...
His methods may not be the best but he's rational, while Miles is emotional...

Of course, that's not to say that Miles is not understandable. Miles is doing what anyone in his shoes would do...
Attempt to see if you could save both his father and his universe...
Even though so far he doesn't seem to have a plan...he chose to at least not give up
Oh, but Spot does. He started out as a vengeful, polite, bumbling, wanna be robber that feels insulted that Spiderman is picking phone calls and texting during their first fight. He even tells the store owner not to make his first robbery "an unpleasant experience". He is a joke that no one takes seriously at first. Heck, Myles even noted "he literally kicked his own ass" and disappeared into one of his own holes. But as the movie progresses, he becomes more and more malevolent until he becomes this fearful, absolutely monstrous entity that brings shivers down your spine. Myles eventually had to acknowledge that Spot is his nemesis (this was after he laughed in the villain's face when he initially this statement). Even his appearance changed from the cheerful polkadot to this dark, almost formless thing.

That, my friend, is one heck of a transformation.

Except the babe stole your money or did some despicable shii to you, this level of hating is unreal and you should really snap out of it, except of course, you are a low life who probably has nothing going for him in real life so he thinks hating someone on a faceless forum for years gives him some sort of misguided validation.

Most people are now just posting reviews, for it cuz the HD version just dropped, so how is her review "typical" or why is her review pressing your scrotal sac so much that you have to spew this rubbish this fine August morning??

The villian arcs of Miguel O'hara and Spot were great but you find something to be vexed about, no counter argument, just straight up hating.

Seriously get a life before it's too late, so that your Tombstone won't read "Ishilove's biggest hater".
Never mind him. I know I don't.

What do you think is the psychological condition of someone with about 100 trolling monikers? Someone that Seun rejoiced when he announced he was leaving Nairaland? Seun said, and I quote "good riddance to bad rubbish." Someone who has been stalking me since 2013 and that's how he found this thread because he followed me here.

That person, my brother, is someone to be pitied and committed to a mental health facility.

HIDDEN STRIKE --- 6.75/10

Not a perfect movie but it's fun to watch. The comic theme of the movie flowed seamlessly with the action. I must give it out to John Cena and Jackie Chan, they did a number there.

LUCK --- 9/10

To me, this is one hell of a movie. The hearty, emotional and adventurous themes of the movie coupled with the charisma of Bob and the top notch animation of the movie made it a loveable film.

There's no known universal where I or my alternate self can ever prefer "Puss in Boots" over "Across the Spiderverse"
I pick" Puss in Boots" over " Spiderverse" because of the characterisation, plot and themes, and not because of the animation style.

that is not really a character arc...

It's simply a case of a villain obtaining more powers...

A character arc is an inner/outer journey of a character where the character develops as a result of various events they experience

Spot as a character did not face any inner obstacle. Right from when Miles met him, he always hated Miles and blamed Miles for destroying his life and his goal was to take revenge on Miles...

He simply acquired more powers to achieve his goal...nothing else changed in Spot...

It was because he became more powerful that Miles began to take him seriously...

That is not really a character arc...that is just a villain obtaining more powers to achieve his goal

Except you're just trying to use the phrase "character arc" in its loosest sense

I was using the term 'character arc' to represent transformation. More power made him more evil, more vengeful and more destructive, so destructive that the Spider Society recognized him as a serious threat. He essentially moved from one end of the spectrum of evil to the other end

Lolita (1997)

I don't know what to rate this classic pèdophilia movie.
I know it's the second adaptation of a controversial book.

If you can't already guess from the title...it's a story about an adult man who became obsessed with a 14 years old girl

I'm not sure what exactly is the message here but I enjoyed the movie even though I felt really uncomfortable at times

The ones I bolded are ones I used to watch when I was being forced to watch with my dad so they bring lots of memories😭, I need to go back to my roots
I'll start with the 70s and leave my review here for each of them thanks soo much.
PS: you'll notice the 80s are almost filled up mostly because that was the height of true cinema in my opinion
Surprised you didn't add Pulp Fiction, I love lengthy dialogues and also love action movies with an actual plot and plot twist that's actually the centre of the movie like the Departed and Star Wars 1977
Thanks once again

Unpopular Opinion.................
I didn't really enjoy Across the Spider verse🧘‍♂️
One........ the animation was confusing to me, very strange, I thought they were just doing to much at this point, into the spider verse animation was already good for me😒
The character esp the villain didn't seem fleshed out enough for me so somehow this won't be memorable enough for me😒 and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will forget this film two weeks after watching🤦🏽‍♂️
It's a great film no doubt- the comedy is great but not the greatest animation of all times like some folks were hyping it to be- some people were comparing it to Toy Story - a whole toy story I can never forget😒

This is in part one of the reasons BARBIE is breaking records. Because the female audience haven't been catered for by Hollywood studios for a very long time. This is why it's an all time highest grossing movie as well as Titanic up till this day.
The male demographic have been the key target audience for Hollywood this past few decades.

False. Heavily gendered movies are a recipe for failure.

Barbie is successful because of strong IP and marketing.

Wonderwoman 2017 movie had good ratings and made 800 million. The movie catered well to female audience but it still didn't pass a billion.

In fact the wonderwoman movie should have passed a billion given how good it was.

Heavily gendering anything automatically risks alienating 50% of the audience- such is only done when you can be sure of capturing a huge majority of one gender.

I'm not even going to lie that I expected this movie to be good.

Marvel fans: If Holland is on Earth 616, then where do Tobey and Garfield belong?

lol i remember i was telling you it might be the first movie to enjoy from FOMO and the Streisand effect. I think that what is coming to pass, cuz imagine Oriamo wanting to join the trend weeks after the movie premiere just so they are not left out, Fulham last week released a 3rd Pink away Jersey last week and tied the marketing to Barbie 😂

Would the movie had gotten to $1bn without these "direct and indirect" marketing? Probably Yes, albiet a bit slower, so the marketing hastened everything.

I was reading somewhere that It and the Super Mario Bros movies has contributed an estimated 20% of all the total BO gross earnings from all the movies cinematically released this year 🤯...That is no small feat 👍

Well said.

Both Mario and Barbie rightly should have a huge chunk of the box office share this year since they're the only movies to presently hit $1bn+. And many movies haven't hit the $700-800+mn gross to water down their share.

Good for WB, that company seriously needed the win and it's been a little while their film hit the milestone with BARBIE destroying almost all WB records. Will most likely break everything by the end of its run.

R rated and with an initial stupid poor projection of $40-45mn opening weekend. I always smelt that thing was improbable.

I remember saying that Nolan name alone was gonna sell that film hard especially when you see the performance of TENET in the midst of the pandemic when everyone was postponing everything till 2021. Imagine people forcing themselves out to see what Nolan cooked then, talkless of now with no restrictions.
