I made a terrible oversight of not checking electricity bills before purchasing a house. It just completely escaped my mind till after purchase.

I just found out there's electricity debts of 500k unpaid to IBEDC.

How do I handle this?

I know it will be difficult getting such a negligent
previous owner to pay such bills. sad

This is really interesting.

You can actually negotiate with IBEBC.

Approach the zonal office in your area, ask to speak with the zonal manager.
Show proof of change of ownership, let him/her know that you just purchased the house.

It's not automatic that they will clear your debt oh.
Just plead to his/her human conscience, you might be asked to pay something even if it's 100k-150k, it's fine.

Go and try your luck.

This is what I would do if I was in your shoes.

You should have involved a real-estate lawyer before transaction. You were probably cutting cost. Go to their office and negotiate or call the owner.

Oga, your own is even a bit fair because you own the house, the house I rented had over 400k bill which If I get a prepaid meter they will be deducting from my monthly recharge till I clear the entire bill and bad part is I won't even take the prepaid meter when going after paying like 50k to get it, that's why I'm still on estimated billing paying only current charges, at least till I pack out of the house.

Go to their office and apply for prepaid meter then beg them to reduce the previous bill to like half that you don't want to settle it with court case with them or if they would prefer court case, you will spend the money there.....

I won't pay for what I didn't use and I wont buy meter for another person

Believe it or not, you must pay that outstanding. Those electricity guys are worse than police. They don't care, they just want money.

You best bet is to used that money, add like 1m and install solar. It's cheaper and environmental friendly. If you don't have 1.5m for solar, you can use 1m to start, then upgrade as time goes on. Bet me, you will save more on the long run.

This is most likely one of the reasons the owner of the house sold the house.

You traded with a con man.

You should only be sorted out in their office.

Or,

First, have an electrician remove your wires directly from the pole and properly kept under your protection, this should be out of site

This would save you any drama from the power holding company,

If the street is incorrectly numbered, if possible, have the house number changed. Then, give the power holding company a call to have them register you as a new resident with the new house number associated with your name.

Or go for alternative power supply.

grin Bros let me be sincere with you because i have worked with a similar company in PH (PHEDC) before.
1. You will surely pay every single penny on that bill
2. They will chart a way out for you by way of negotiation, i.e installmental payments etc.
3. Lastly, if you chose to go hard with them, your cable will be disconnected and taken to their office.

Bros, see how you can convince the seller of the said house to share the payment with you.
OR if you have money just go for solar.

Utility bills are on the owner's account name not the property's. Get a lawyer and create a new account with them in your name.

The old bill is none of your business.

Reach out to the landlord first, second if by all means get your own prepaid meter for the apartment, disconnect the existing one for now if the landlord is not cooperating, it's better you pay postpaid than you pay that debt

To be honest, there is nothing you can do about it. The best option will be to request for a prepaid meter. For every recharge, a particular percentage will be deducted from it to offset the previous dept. If you recharge consistently every month for the next 2 - 3 years, you will be able to clear the dept.

If you don't get a prepaid meter, you will be getting ridiculous extimated bills that will make you regret buying that house. With a prepaid meter, you are in full control of the how much you pay each month.

Another option is to see if there is a way you can register the building with a new name at the electricity distribution company. This may not work because the company knows that once you do this, their 500k is gone.
