I made a terrible oversight of not checking electricity bills before purchasing a house. It just completely escaped my mind till after purchase.

I just found out there's electricity debts of 500k unpaid to IBEDC.

How do I handle this?

I know it will be difficult getting such a negligent
previous owner to pay such bills. sad

Nothing to do but to clear it.

Are they lithium batteries?
Everyone recommends lithium batteries nowadays.
And the cost is not funny.

Lithium batteries are supposed to be the greatest as they last longer and can be discharged up to 10%. But the price for top quality Li-ion batteries are maaaad man. So, no I didn’t buy Lithium batteries

My advise, change the meter, you will get one for 80k or so. Pay someone to change it and you are free.
Re: N500K Electricity Bill Debt On Newly Purchased House. by crossbreedwears(m): 8:12pm On Aug 23, 2023
He should plead and pay about 150k for electricity he did not use Which kind advise be that?? If i am in his shoes, i will only visit their zonal branch and provide necessary info that shows new ownership and i won't pay shishi. If they like they should take away the prepaid. A lot of nonsense has to stop in this country
theamazonguru:
This is really interesting.

You can actually negotiate with IBEBC.

Approach the zonal office in your area, ask to speak with the zonal manager.
Show proof of change of ownership, let him/her know that you just purchased the house.

It's not automatic that they will clear your debt oh.
Just plead to his/her human conscience, you might be asked to pay something even if it's 100k-150k, it's fine.

Go and try your luck.

This is what I would do if I was in your shoes.
Re: N500K Electricity Bill Debt On Newly Purchased House. by crossbreedwears(m): 8:13pm On Aug 23, 2023
I'll rathwe take the case to court and pay for what i did not use.
Brendaniel:
Oga, your own is even a bit fair because you own the house, the house I rented had over 400k bill which If I get a prepaid meter they will be deducting from my monthly recharge till I clear the entire bill and bad part is I won't even take the prepaid meter when going after paying like 50k to get it, that's why I'm still on estimated billing paying only current charges, at least till I pack out of the house.

Go to their office and apply for prepaid meter then beg them to reduce the previous bill to like half that you don't want to settle it with court case with them or if they would prefer court case, you will spend the money there.....

I won't pay for what I didn't use and I wont buy meter for another person

hahahaha.. how old are you first of all?

It’s not done that way. It’s non of the IBEBC problem. There’s nothing he can do about it.

Can you imagine this one asking me how old I am.

Very funny.
Anyways you asked, I will tell you. I am 44 yo if it helps you massage your overbloated intellectual ego.

Just so you know:
I have negotiated things way higher and complicated than this.
I have sat on committees that got things that was thought highly difficult resolved in little time.
I have initiated, planned, implemented, supervised and executed projects in different domains.
I have set up project management offices in different places where I was opportuned to be sent just for that purpose. My results speakfor me.
Feel free to call me a get-it-done man.

So,now that you know my age and what I do, how old are you too.

No be by gragra.
You expect the government agency to wipe off debt owed just on the basis of change of ownership?
Does the property still stand on the address attached to the meter?
Was the debt owed?

Irrespective of the occupant: old or new, the debt is linked to the property. Whichever way,the debt has to be paid.

I was once privy to a similar case. It was actually my colleague.
He moved into a building that owed a cumulative of 2m.
His apartment got a share of 700k.

Guy man insisted he wouldn't pay, he dragged the matter here and there. PHED gust dey look am.
Na when he tire, he called for negotiation. Las las he paid 200k howbeit not at once but instalmentally, like recharge 10k get debited 5k to service old bill, get credit value of 5k.

This is how things work.

In a sane country. The old occupant of the house will be charge to court and he will pay off the debt but Nigeria is a different case and we can still make a difference. The electricity guys sees everything as normal thing because people have been coming up with such cases to beg but if we all stopd against sich things with concrete proofs, it will be different. As for me, i won't pay shishi and will rather use generator. If you can buy a house then you should br able to affodd fuel or diesel. I might sound stupid, but it's what i will do

Negotiate with nepa they will give you a discount. Then clear up the bill. Since they know u bought the place they feel u have money. It happened to me I negotiated they gave me 25%off and I paid the balance. Ensure everything is documented too.

If not for the corrupt system we operate in this shithole, it's not your responsibility to recover an outstanding debt for IBEDC owed by the consumer, rather it's the responsibility of the suppliers(IBEDC) which you were never part of, and you can not pay for what you never consumed.

I will advise you instead of paying that 500k, get a good Lawyer with 200k to 300k; you can even be determinent to stake the 500k at the guarantee of winning the case, then after which you demand for damages against the IBEDC worth 5x or more of the amount you spent.

Pay the money ...when you buy a house, you are not only buying the asset but also the liability . Treat that bill as bad debt ...pay it up and get a prepaid meter ...While your own was 500k ...mine was 400k ......but I cleared the bill and got myself a prepaid ...

If you had checked their status and took note you would have made the owner promise to pay other wise no deal. Na so one buyer maker us pay previous debt for the house we sold. As Una no get agreement, it is very difficult to make him pay now.
