livenija:So, you decided to curse me, because I said that companies should be able to make a profit so that they can better serve you and me? You are funny bro. Very funny. ![]() I hope you run a business someday. Better sell at a loss, so that the poor can breathe, y'hear? |

Frezhkid10:And the non-transparency and inefficency is as a result of them losing money. See, when companies are forced to operate at a loss, in order to survive they do wuru wuru and mago mago. (There is a reason why estimated billing is a thing). The wuru wuru ...eg estimated billing, bribes, etc...is meant to enable them raise enough money to surivie. Do you see anything like that in the GSM secotr, or even the food sector? No. because at the end of the day, they are allowed to sell at a price they set. They earn profit, and by extension they can also make back their money (Some years a go, a child was caught stealing scrap metal...because his parents were poor and not earning enough. Now, if his parents were paid well, or were earning cash, he won't be stealing, and if he was, we would call him a kleptomaniac, and punish him or deal with him). Anytime government sets prices, all sorts of distortions and mess happen. Because the sectors affected are not making a profit. Like now, once upon a time, there were many countries who practiced Communisim. They set prices of food because after all poor people all have to eat. Well, the price setting led to large scale scarcity, and in some instances, food was absent from the shelves. You wanted to buy food, you went to the black market where food could cost more than your salary. At some point people were resorting to illegal means to make money. Today many of those countries no longer practice communisim, and only a few of them do. Yet food is on the table because food is now sold at a profit. (Except in North Korea, where the same craxy price controls happen with predictable results). |

We should be working hard to make the country a better place. Some people are just planning to rip the citizens off. Why not improve output and earn as more citizens are metered. |

FreeStuffsNG:Very good suggestions ,but have you people been sleeping before? All points raised by the NSE are germain and crucial. No justification for increase in tariffs because there is no attendant improvement in power supply infact it is getting worse. Thanks for coming to our defence. |

nairalanda1:Your view is one-sided and flawed. Even though many are bypassing, so so many more are being overbilled in cruel estimated billing tariff Regimes. It's no longer need that the DISCOs have use the populace to meet their subjectively draconian targets regardless of whether they supply the power to them or not? How do you account for marketers serving current bbills to communities whose transformers are already known to have been for months?! How do you account for the indiscrepancies of NEPA marketing teams at the most basic local level in turning the mandate given them into personal money making ventures as they move through communities pardoning why electrical default and infraction for fees that line their own pockets? How do you account for inequality in distribution while billing remains same? Have you seen billing system applied to major areas in say Abuja versus the ghettos while comparing power availability in both areas? You should get more data before being categorical. You have some points anyway. Not everybody are thieves. Not everybody don't want to pay for what they're using. Too many are paying through the nose for darkness. Get your facts right. Even the Govt and neighboring companies are the chief debtors yet the people are being billed blind for it. |

Hi all guys Engineers in Nigeria are rightfully concerned about the proposed electricity tariff increase. It's crucial to address their objections and ensure affordable, reliable power for all citizens.Free Fire name style |

chachanga:I could say the same about yours. Even though many are bypassing, so so many more are being overbilled in cruel estimated billing tariff Regimes. You have just answered your own question. Because discos are losing money from people bypassing and also people who just refuse to pay (including the old harridan who chases them with guns)...yet STILL have to earn money, guess who bears the burden.? Me and you. Discos are being hit from two sides. A significiant proportion of customers are not paying, and they cannot raise their bills to market level prices, or even with inflation (infact from 2017-19 they were forbidden from raising prices). So, what's next? Does the same thing happen in businesses that set their prices? No. Note that DISCOS revenue...a part of it goes to GENCOS and even the TCN. If they are not earning enough, they have to reject power. And the GENCOS AND TCN don't have enough cash. You should get more data before being categorical. You have some points anyway. Not everybody are thieves. Not everybody don't want to pay for what they're using. Too many are paying through the nose for darkness. Get your facts right. Even the Govt and neighboring companies are the chief debtors yet the people are being billed blind for it.Yes, and at the end, I believe that EVERYONE should PAY the DISCOS at the PRICE that THE DISCOS SET...so that they can be PROFITABLE ENOUGH TO PAY FOR IMPROVEMENTS. EVERYONE, GOVERNMENT AND RICH PEOPLE AND POOR PEOPLE WHO DO NOT PAY INCLUSIVE. (I see what you did there..). Like we did for GSM. Note that everyone and his mother back then called the GSM companies thieves and extortionists. But at the end, the GSM companies made insane profits,....WHICH were reinvested in the building of large supporting infrastructure for the telecoms sector. Or you think government built all those GSM antenna you see? Nope. Meanwhile NTEL...the government GSM provider was forced to sell data and airtime at 'let the poor breathe prices' . Result....they went from no 3 gsm provider in 2004 to nowhere to be found by 2010. (Now, they exist as a semiprivate company, nowhere near even yeye 9mobile.). Oh, and need I tell you that EVERYONE...from government to the poorest person with a phone PAYS THEIR GSM BILLS? The good old cheat codes have long since been closed (and the last time it happened for MTN, MTN just simply closed the hole, and billed the people who used it, heavily.). Discos don't have that advantage. I mean, I can bypass my meter if I want and get light. I cannot bypass my SIM and get phone service from say Airtel or MTN or glo, or even 9 mobile. Thus, anarchy results. Wuru wuru and corruptuon results. Overbilling results. Get it? And let's be honest, power is expensive. In Ghana, which is at our level, if not worse, power prices are higher, and yes they get 24 hours supply, but people are disconnecting themselves for several hours at night to reduce power costs. South Afrique is just as bad. |

I agreed into to with the NSE. I purchased a prepaid meter since 2019 under the MAP scheme which customers are supposed to be refunded through energy token as stated by NERC, till today nothing is heard about the refund by my disco. In my community, the state government donated a distribution transformer so as to stop the "one day on, one day off" load shedding, but the disco in my area can't even install the transformer for us, we are now shopping for 8 million naira to have the transformer installed and energized. And the discos are pushing for tariff increase with these inefficiencies. I applied for connection for a shop so as to purchase a prepaid meter to avoid estimated billing , this is already 2 months since I have registered on the MAP platform for purchase of a meter, Ikeja disco could not get me a pay advice because they've not send someone to survey my premises. A survey they stated will be done within 30 days of registration. Now am being billed in excess of 50k for a single shop where my wife uses just one freezer to sell soft drinks. I am even thinking of disconnecting the shop and write formally to the disco to have the account suspended pending when they are ready to let me pay for the meter. The electric distribution companies in Nigeria are cheats and fraudulent |

nairalanda1:Please! We pay 15k in a month for estimated billing and we only get power 3 hours in a day, most of which is in the middle of the night. According to you what we are paying is not enough to get reasonable power . |
| Re: Why Nigerian Engineers Kick Against Planned Electricity Tariffs Increase by nairalanda1(m): 9:41am On Sep 01, 2023 |
emmyN:That's the fact, then there is the other fact that there are a large number of people who do not pay, plus inflation and weakening of the naira, which all adds up. N15000 may not be enough to give you 24/7 light these days. |

emmyN:Yeah, you can disagree with me, but it is the sad fact. You are expecting 24 hours power supply from a disco, who 1.Has a large number of defaulters 2.Is forced by law to charge below market price and is paid a subsidy to cover the resulting loss...that is usually not enough 3.Is running at a loss...to the point that as a result the banks are running them. (and in one instance, government had to retake over the disco) 4.Cannot make enough profit because of 1 and 2. At the end, you are lucky you get power for 3 hours at N15000. Would you be able to offer good service, if government 1) tells you to charge at a cost that is two thirds of what you would have set at your price, and 2) 40-50% of your customers do not pay? Think about it. I am not saying this to blame the poor....I am showing you the issue that is happening. Poor renumeration always breeds poor service. It's not magic. |

They should figure a way out we as a people make too much excuses for the government and at the end of the day they make us pay the price of not holding them accountable with austerity measures , in my opinion we are aiding and supporting corruption, I can’t wrap my head over why national assets are privatized is it not because one person can steal the money of that asset and run away without consequences? Who bought the Distribution, generation and transmission? Who sold it and for how much . If they can DGT why did they not start theirs from scratch, they could have gone into wind power ,massive solar farms and pumped hydro. An individual bought government asset to rip off fellow citizens sad this is injustice. nairalanda1: |
| Re: Why Nigerian Engineers Kick Against Planned Electricity Tariffs Increase by nairalanda1(m): 11:31am On Sep 01, 2023 |
jaytimeo:Good, so you would let government set your prices, if you were a businessman.? No matter what you say, if a business is not allowed to charge at the market price, it would lose money, and it would engage in massive corruption and stealing to earn money. Simple. |

The NSE is doing a good job in customer protection. If customers are continually oppressed, they may turn to the utilization of solar energy. If the FG swings into actions by the use of the right policies for customer protection, it would pay of in the long run. Thanks. |
