That middle weight division sef wahala too much. It's safe to say it's the weakest of all the divisions in the UFC. How does a champ lose to someone like Strickland? Oh, ok I'll tell you.
One, he's past his prime AND two, he doesn't have ground game enough to withstand Sean's. Izzy has always struggled with wrestlers and that became very clear when he decided to move up in weight to fight Jan. With that one taking him down and keeping him there at will, it served as a template for beating him. And ever since, he's been having that as a problem. Heck, even Pereira took him down too. The difference is, Strickland actually can grapple just like Dricus. So when people like this takes you down and back pack you, submissions are almost inevitable.
If I was him, I'll take a year off, strengthening my BJJ since he's already on it. Just BJJ for one year and by the time he comes back, he will be willing to go to the ground, by himself. Or anywhere the fight goes.
With the way the game has evolved now and everyone knowing everyone's secrets, He'll never win a top 5 again unless he makes adjustments to his ground game.
