Bonjour à tous

I have a question about learning French from watching movies. My French is rudimentary at best (A2) and I’m trying to help my learning by watching movies. Which way would be easier? Watching French movies with English subtitles or English movies with French subtitles

Is it true that TEF format is about to change? And if so what are the changes we are likely to encounter. Please anyone with reliable information on TEF exam format change.

From what I gathered they will no longer have 60 questions in 40 minutes for Comprehension Orale. It will be 40 questions in 40 minutes. they will not use the section A,B,C and D format as we know it, instead they will use real recordings from tv5 monde, RFI and France 24. So one can no longer cram but must understand the recording and answer accordingly.

For comprehension ecrite , there will also be changes. Less number of questions but more long text questions.
The changes are said to take effect in October 2023.
Anyone with more information, please share

Thats true

I suspected that it would get to this, they will make TEF or TCF harder to pass now.
They want people who have actually studied and lived in a francophone environment for like a year or more angry angry angry

I just checked lefrancaisdesaffaires website (the official TEF website) and there wasn't any mention of any changes to their exam format. It is likely just a rumour.

Hi Everyone

Please I’m very new to French as regards TEF or TCF. I estimated my CRS score based on everything I have and I scored a 477. However, I’m looking to boost the mark to a 500+ hence why I think I want to take French.

I registered to start the class and intend to take the exam by March next year. I don’t need the highest scores per se just about some points to put me on a 500+ mark.

Is this doable?
Which of the two should I take? TEF or TCF
Are the questions fairly similar? (Cos I read somewhere in this thread that format will be changed)
And any other information I might need, please.

Thanks

I would advise you to digest this thread from page 1 and be prepared to self study multiple hours a day. Get a tutor or join a school to begin. It is possible.

Page 1 of this thread has a link to a TEF vs TCF comparison.

Finally google TCF Canada and TEF Canada to see sample exam papers.

Most people seem to find:
* listening CO easier in TEF
*writing EE easier in TCF.

In the past reading CE passages were often repeated in TEF.

Hello!

Boosting your CRS score by improving your French language proficiency is a great strategy for increasing your chances of immigrating to Canada. Here's some information to help you on your journey:

Is it doable to increase your score to 500+ by taking a French exam?
Yes, it is certainly doable to increase your CRS score by improving your French language skills. Scoring 500+ on a French proficiency exam can significantly boost your CRS score, which is a crucial factor in the Express Entry system.

Which French language exam to take: TEF or TCF?
Both TEF (Test d'Évaluation de Français) and TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) are recognized by the Canadian immigration authorities (IRCC) for Express Entry. You can choose either of them, but it's essential to understand the differences:

TEF: This test is often preferred by candidates because it provides a more detailed breakdown of your language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). It includes multiple sections, and you can choose to take only the sections you need for immigration purposes.

TCF: The TCF is more straightforward and includes listening and reading comprehension, as well as language structure and vocabulary. It might be less detailed than TEF, but it's still recognized for immigration.

Your choice may also depend on the availability of test centers in your area and your personal preference. Make sure to check the specific requirements of the immigration program you are applying for, as they may specify which test they prefer.

Are the questions similar between TEF and TCF?
While both tests assess your French language skills, they have different formats and content. TEF tends to have more sections and is known for being more comprehensive. TCF is somewhat simpler in format. It's essential to familiarize yourself with the specific content and format of the test you choose by using practice materials or taking preparatory courses.

Other information you might need:

Prepare adequately: Consider enrolling in a French language course or hiring a tutor to help you prepare for the exam.
Practice regularly: Consistent practice is key to improving your language skills. Use language learning apps, textbooks, and online resources.
Take practice exams: To get a sense of the test format and your readiness, take practice exams under timed conditions.
Register early: Make sure to register for the exam well in advance to secure your spot.
Familiarize yourself with test details: Check the test center's rules, required identification.

Thank you so much for this very detailed information.

So I registered to start taking classes with Alliance Francaise, however the sessions are a bit too long and I want to write the test in the shortest possible time. So I intend to hire a private tutor in addition to the class so as to be better prepared and hopefully write by February or March 2024 latest.

I’ll sure drop more questions as I go (so please excuse me 😁)

Thank you so much!

5 months isn’t feasible. Budget 10 months- 1year minimum if you don’t want to waste your money.

Very True, I didn't want to say this in order not to discourage anyone but littyprincess just hit the nail at the right spot smiley smiley smiley

Even for people that immersed themselves in a francophone country, it took them a minimum of 6 months of studies and preparation to ace TEF exams let alone someone living in Nigeria, give yourself a year at least.

Being Bilingual is a life long skill that can even enable you to get a Job Offer abroad from Nigeria.

I get this totally but like I said, I’m not looking to get the highest score more like if I can get B1 scores or intermediate scores.

Asides joining Alliance, I also got the services of a private tutor. So while I’m doing A1 with Alliance, I’ll do A2 with my private tutor and we’ll drill down into TEF.

I’ve also gotten books and I’m getting more. Hopefully I can attain the score I need to scale up.

Getting a B1 won't give you the maximum score, what you should aim at is high B2.

I get your drift. Thus joining joining won't help you pass TEF to be sincere. It is not even about learning French. You need to learn French for TEF from the get go to expedite the time. You don't even need to know all the French to Pass TEF. It just have to be systematised. Just See TEF like IELTS of French to understand what I mean

I like the positive attitude, once you have gotten to B1, find a speaking partner and speak French for atleast 30 minutes everyday, that's the only way to improve speaking

For reading, I don't know if they still repeat long texts but if they do, start going through it and cram the answers if you can

For Listening, at every moment possible make sure you're listening to something in French, you'll notice some improvements yourself, once you get to a comfortable level, start going through the past questions and do all of them, do them repeatedly

For writing, first learn all the grammar and tenses, write and be conscious of error with time

If you're just starting Feb/March might not be feasible but nevertheless go all in for it especially if there are no other commitment
