My Daughter, Greatness Was Planning To Travel Abroad For PhD When She Fell Victim To 'One Chance' Criminals, Abuja Hospital Negligence – Bereaved Father

October 6, 2023

‘One chance' is commonly used in Nigeria to refer to fraud or scam in Nigeria, especially when a group of criminals picks up passengers waiting for a taxi or bus, with the aim of robbing or defrauding them.

Rev'd Joseph Olorunfemi, the father of the late Greatness Olorunfemi, a victim of a chance attack said his first daughter, was planning to relocate to the United States to further her education by earning a PhD in Microbiology before she was killed.

‘One chance' is commonly used in Nigeria to refer to fraud or scam in Nigeria, especially when a group of criminals picks up passengers waiting for a taxi or bus, with the aim of robbing or defrauding them.

During a press conference organised by Young African Leadership Initiatives (YALI) Network on Thursday in Abuja, Olorunfemi who is the General Overseer of Christ Restoration Gospel Centre, Abaranje Ikotun, Lagos, called on the Nigerian government and police to conduct a thorough investigation into the negligence of the Maitama General Hospital which led to his daughter’s death.

He said the last discussion he had with Greatness was on Saturday, September 23, 2023, via a conference call with two other friends based in the US, who had offered to assist and facilitate her admission into a school there.

"She delivered her profile and a decision was made that she will commence her PhD in Microbiology in July 2024. We ended the meeting with excitement and by Monday, September 25, she began supplying necessary documents to facilitate the relocation," Olorunfemi said.

He said he had a premonition of danger hovering around his family which prompted him to summon an online prayer session for the family members including Greatness during which they prayed to avert the impending evil.

"We did not know that it was irreversible. God is not our errand boy who must do what we ask him to do. He will only do what he thinks fit to do.

“He is a giver of life and he takes life without anybody's permission,” he said.

The cleric recounted how the driver who brought her daughter to the hospital gave a narration different from what a nurse reported. He said the driver confirmed that Greatness was not dead at the time of their arrival at the Abuja hospital but that the accident and emergency unit locked them out unattended to and demanded a police report before she could be attended to.

He said it was during the delay that she passed on.

The clergyman noted that his account was supported by video clips and voice recordings that have now gone viral online.

Olorunfemi said, "The officers of Young African Leadership Initiatives (YALI) represented by Mrs Moyo, (leader of YALI) Irene and Darlington also came and met me at Mabuchi District and we all met in the office of the DPO (Divisional Police Officer) of Mabuchi Station where they presented the video and audio recordings on the incident that terminated the life of one of their members.

"The DPO thereafter summoned SPA Busari, the District crime officer to write the hospital and invite the workers on duty for interrogation. He also collected the mobile lines of Greatness and promised that a necessary investigation would be conducted for justice to be done.

"Greatness was my first child and first daughter; she was well-educated and talented. Becoming a victim of a ‘one chance’ operation was not premeditated but being denied immediate treatment by the General Hospital Maitama was inhuman, cruel, unjust, negligent and a disregard for human life.

"Many people have come out to mention their late relatives and friends who had been treated like Tolulope (Greatness) and died on the grounds of ‘no police report’. If this trend continues, it will have negative implications."

He added that though his daughter was gone, they were demanding justice because someone else could be the next victim.

Why wasn't she rushed to another hospital if they experienced rejection on arrival.

I was once a victim of an attack on the road some years ago and my father rushed me to a private hospital(I consider that she was assisted by some strangers)

I can recall the doctor was making some demands before he could commence treatment while I was losing blood.

I was quickly rushed to another facility and from there an emergency doctor was summoned and the hospital services were activated to attend to me.

I survived that experience because we did not allow the system to decide my fate.

I believe if she was immediately rushed to a private facility, she possibly could have survived.

May her soul rest in Peace, several people failed her.

Although I feel terrible for the poor girl whose dreams got cut short, but the cold statement of the father saying G^d is not their errrand boy, bla bla bla, he deserves no pity.

Why do people just like to question things? As soon as god’s name is mentioned in a matter, nobody wants to question Or challenge such conclusions. Why?

Are they in essence saying God is a wuked being?

If indeed what happened was sanctioned by him, then it makes no sense calling for investigation. Accept your fate and move.

How Sad! Nigeria Happened to Her, many thousands of similar stories like hers never made it to the news, May Her Gently soul Rest In Peace.

However in solidarity of an Omulabi as president. I think other omulabis should shun traveling or studying abroad for now. Onto Awalokan! and Ronu!

All true Omulabis especially the Muslims, should stay back, support and enjoy the handwork of the master strategist Tinubu himself. There are beautiful beaches across the SW, if you want to holiday, Top notch educational educational institutions are also situated there. If want to see skycrapers go to marina in lagos, if you to enter monorail train, one is now operating in lasgidi, The best hospitals are also the SW. So why travel when a yoruba muslim is finally now a president. Stay back in solidarity, so that you feel the good works of your own. Those who are already abroad should relocate.

And All the Embassies, customs at the airport and seaports should Reject OUT RIGHTLY any Yoruba muslim from traveling out for whatever reasons whatsoever. The christian yorubas should have their Social media checked to make sure of their Political affiliations before being considered to leave. Those muslim omulabis who spend more time abroad than in nigeria should have their residency revoked, so they can be in nigeria to enjoy the good works of our great president. This is my opinion with good intentions.

Depends.

1.She was rushed to a tertiary hospital....so there may have been no other hospital

2.Private hospitals are expensive compared to tertiary hospitals

3.There was no time. She had already been driven from Kubwa to Maitama...quite a long distance, and moving to another hospital would have been very expensive.

Are you serious, we are talking of they ought not have rejected her prior to requesting for police report.
Our first instinct should be the last in this kind of situation. This is a situation where they will be thinking of hope, not option of going somewhere else. They denied her the right to live, her personal right because of some stupid policy.

Abeg Dey reason before posting!

Why must hospital request for a doctor's report before treating someone that was shot?? Can't they just be treating the person and inform the cops?

So sad.

The youth would not come out to protest for better security for someone like this lady because she is not a celebrity. They would not protest that the hospitals change their policies of not admitting accident or victims of robberies.

Video the dad was referring to:

A proper first aid administration could have also kept that lady alive.
