The International Monetary Fund has proposed a higher tax policy to solve Nigeria’s fiscal challenges.

IMF Africa Department Director, Abebe Selassie disclosed this during a press briefing on the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Economic Outlook on Friday at the ongoing World Bank Group/International Monetary Fund Meeting in Marrakech, Morocco.

DAILY POST reports that the country’s fiscal challenge had persisted despite fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government in June.

In 2022, the country spent 96 per cent of its revenue on debt servicing; still in the first six months of 2023, debt serving gulped N2.34 trillion.

As a way out, the IMF director said the Nigerian Government must back the fuel subsidy removal and naira unification policies with an effective policy to ramp up revenue.

The exchange rate reforms that the Government did were very, very welcome, trying to unify the rate, similarly the fuel subsidy.

“But that will not help and will not stick unless you also tighten monetary policy and do something to mobilise more tax revenues. So, a holistic package of reforms is what’s needed
.

So, you have a medley of things mainly rooted in the fiscal challenges that Nigeria has faced, not having tax revenues.

“At the same time, this country has incredible potential, and we have seen reforms moving in the right direction in recent months.

“What is needed, we feel, is making the reforms holistic and help reinforce each other. Just as things were not reinforcing each other in the past, I think there is scope to make the reforms reinforce each other,” the IMF said.

As if higher cost of living is not bad enough. Now I understand why a bible says: "Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender". IMF is dictating cruel policies to nations that go to them for help.

It's obvious the major sinister motive of all these western agencies is to impoverish, dehumaize and render Africans redundant, hopeless and helpless.

America's World Bank advised our govt to remove subsidy and like a magic, the economy would bounce back, knowing fully well that lack of funds was never due to subsidy payment, but just to make life harder for us.

Now the twin sister of World Bank is telling the FG again to increase taxation as if the consequence of subsidy removal was not enough, now encouraging the govt again to implement another hardship advice.

No international agency has the genuine progress of Africa at heart. All is smokescreen with stupid analysis to bamboozle us.

Can any sane person now see that IMF is the greatest enemy of Africans, this guys are evil. So higher tax on top of the financial hardships Nigerians are going through.

That was how they advised Emefiele to float the naira , but the man refused pointing the fact that the hardship will be too much for Nigerians. Now their puppet Tinubu has done what they wanted. That is why they are now persecuting Emefiele.

This guys are evil

The government should widen the tax bracket instead of increasing tax. A lot of people are not paying tax in Nigeria

Tax corruption. Corruption is eating our revenue.
When we start taxing corruption, we will earn billions of dollars.

The thing that IMF would do to Nigeria for listening to them would be unheard of in the history of the world,Buhari was smart enough not to listen to this lies but unfortunately we have a president that has similar mindset that the poor should go and die.

IMF needs to STFU.

Who are they going to tax?

Is it the 23.2 Million jobless people. Or the millions of people collecting 30K per month?

Plus, paying taxes in Nigeria is foolish and unpatriotic. You're funding the lifestyle of corrupt no-good politicians.

Then, there's seignorrage. Which is the tax EVERY Nigerian pays every time the USELESS CBN prints money.

It is your civic duty as a patriotic Nigerian to do everything in your power NOT to pay taxes.

IMF needs to shut up or ship ALL Nigerian leaders to orientation camp.

They're not "cruel". These policies have actually worked in Asian countries. Africa is a different matter because of low productivity.
