Let's have our opinion poll.😎 (Hit the SHARE button if your answer is YES & Hit the LIKE button if your answer is NO)
Do recruiters reject a candidate because of location, even when the candidate is qualified for the job?

I feel is better for a recruiter to reach out to a candidate and inform them if they are willing to relocate without company sponsorship. And allow the candidate to make their choice than cancelling a candidate just like that.

I have seen candidates indicate on their CV "available to relocate". Yet it doesn't help. I just believe that technology has made things so easy that you can interview a candidate remotely to ascertain if you can go ahead or not.

Job seekers are faced with a lot of pressure these days that they apply for jobs with fake addresses just to suit a job location.

Is it that we don't like a working system in the country or honest people? A lot goes on in this job-hunting and recruiting industry that can not be said and we don't know.

We need to do better.

I will like to read your opinion on why this happens, what are your thoughts?

Kindly let us read from your viewpoint, we sincerely want to learn, maybe there might be reasons as thought leaders and people who are into the system. We want to learn.

Thank you for your response 🙏

I think they do. Some don't even hide it anymore as they now tag their preferred locations with the job advert.
Some believe they are trying to reduce the travel time of their employees like in Lagos where there is traffic problems and most employees using that to cover their tardiness. It is not entirely bad but those unnecessary bottlenecks in a growing economy is a recipe for disaster - not rapid but cumulative and gradual because by doing that employers are already at the risk of limiting competence.

Of course it is only done in a dysfunctional system like it is the fault of an applicant to live in a particular area especially when that is where they can afford

Probably yes!

Some form of businesses and services require proximity as a great advantage. Some employers will even specify that they require residents to be employed.

Of course. If I need someone to work in Ibadan , why would I invite an applicant living in Abuja? The person might not even be hired.

Yes I do.

Some job hunters could be desperate for a job and not calculate how much extra it would cost them to commute to work. It becomes a problem later.

Apart from having to increase transportation allowance later, which wouldn't have applied to another candidate that stays nearby, Nigeria is very stressful today and an employer wants to avoid having a stressed and disgruntled employee.

Yes I was rejected in NDDC twice, in 2007 at Bayelsa State and Port Harcourt because am not from Naija Delta. They told me KOROKORO that they will not take me because am IGBO....and I wept and went solo.

Certainly A big YES

Location matters and has a direct link to how effective you will be at work, leaving to far from work that will require you driving a long distance to and fro will certainly affect your productivity

grin grin angry grin grin yes but is wrong....if u passed the test or interview in sane environment the company suppose to give u options to relocate or work from your location...but in this country competence is nolonger required. Just belong to the tribe of the person in charge...u are already qualified even if you don't know is or come

yessooo

As an employer of Labour myself with an office in Surulere, once i saw your CV stating locations in Ipaja, Ikorodu, Abule Egba, Iyana Ipaja, Alagbado, Ajah, Akowonjo, Ojo, Ikotun, Mile 12, Ojodu Berger/Alagbole and other distant locations, you will never be called for interview because once you get started with work after the initial gragra and desperation to work, natural occurrence associated with coming and going from long distance will surely occur as we are human excpet you state that you have place(s)you can relocate or stay that would be close r to the office inside your CV or body of applications.

Most Nigerian youths dont think proactively in that line and see critical reasons why they are not getting enough or quality interview oppurtunities

What we experience as applicants/ organisational staff in this Lagos especially is Absolutely NOT ideal or normal. How can you be staying in Ipaja/Ayobo and go work everyday in Ajah? by time you do such for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years, how you expect to remain the same and not grow old prematurely? Thats absolutely insane! But some see it as normal. Some employers dont care wherever you will be coming from. Just ensure you get to work at assigned time

With me, good staff benefits, welfare and vibrancy matter in order for you to be productive

But to make, man/woman must survive!
