Subsidy isn't the problem of Nigeria. If every single leaders (past, present and future) of Nigeria really needs this country to work, then a deliberate step needs to be taking in providing infrastructure to engage the people in local production.

I've never seen a country that's
1) Wasteful of time.
2) Wasteful of energy.
3) Wasteful of resources.
4) Wasteful of intellect.
5) Wasteful of manpower.

And all these wastefulness are all deliberate.

Don't be deceived. Nigeria is not getting any better soon cos there's not even blueprint or roadmap chatting our course.

Tinubu's government is just like every other government before him.

Nigeria is her to metamorphosis into a nation.

I use to always hold special regards for Kperogi’s deep insights on issues.
But the series of mistakes he made regarding Tinubu CSU certificate really made me begin to doubt his credibility and insight.

He made several error base declarations, he retracted several errors and went back on them again, before finally taking position with the BBC fact checking report which declared that Tinubu never forged any documents
as in.

He used to apply as much logic in his articles before that sometimes made them enjoyable to read.

But these days, he just talks like headless mob.

I hope he regains his senses again soon enough.

Nigeria is too broke to fund subsidies on imported refined fuel. Falana was wrong to support keeping subsidies in 2012. Had Nigeria removed subsidies and invested in repairing and building new refineries, Nigeria would have been a net exporter of refined oil and petrochemicals products.

Nigeria needs a hydrocarbon tsar to coordinate the industrialisation of Nigeria's oil, petrochemical and refinery industries; this is $200 billion annually if adequately managed. By the end of 2024, Nigeria will have nearly 1.3 million barrels per day refinery capacities equivalent to Singapore's yearly export of $50 billion in refined products.

The government-owned refineries must be taken out of the hands of government officials and listed on the public stock exchange.

The Port Harcourt refinery is undergoing a $1.5 billion upgrade after Italy's Tecnimont was awarded the contract to carry out the work in 2021. The revamp will take 44 months to complete, the oil ministry said in April last year. The Warri and Kaduna Refineries are also being upgraded and rehabilitated. This differs from the wasteful TAM used to siphon valuable funds. Nigeria has a total Refinery capacity of 450,000 barrels per day refinery.

The country is now pinning its hopes of ending fuel imports on a 650,000 barrels per day refinery being built to by Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man.

In 2012 during the OccupyNigeria protests sparked by the removal of petrol subsidies (which Sanusi helped inspire), Femi Falana told Sanusi at a forum that removing subsidies from petrol would lead to an increase in the cost of transportation, which would trigger inflation that would inflict incalculable hurt on the lives of millions of Nigeria.

how is Nigeria broke?

this is the first line of the article but its funny that u missed it

Sanusi is an evangelist of subsidy removal for the poor but has no problems with subsidies for the rich. He once spent 7m naira a month for internet and spent over N37 million on Airtel in 7 months!

Tinubu introduced palliatives after "removing" fuel subsidy. is palliatives not subsidy?

according to you "Had Nigeria removed subsidies and invested in repairing and building new refineries".

but once again, am not sure how u read the article where it was clearly stated that "the government spent N11.350 trillion to rehabilitate Nigeria’s three refineries that have never refined a single drop of petrol".

let me ask. Is Tinubus welfare as president being subsidised?

are governors being subsidised?

is the national assembly being subsidised?

if Nigeria is too broke to fund subsidies as u claim, how come Tinubu is employing more than 50 ministers? where will he get money to pay them and fund their looting?

Where is the excess trillions of the subsidy removal revenue/funds declared as generated?
APCheats.

Wittyness.
The excess Naira saved has been converted to dollars and is currently in various private dom accounts. This is why the Naira crashed beyond the government’s expectations.

The increase in civil servants salaries will also lead to another surge in demand for dollars further devaluing the Naira.

I like Kperogi but this write up seems like a personal attack. Mentioning his life has always been subsidized, does one pre determine the family or life he is born into or know what the future holds.
You just mention allegations of expenses by a journalist. so because he did not come out to defend the allegations, that makes him guilty.
Kperogi should stick to issues and stop the personality attack.

On this subsidy issue, it is the right thing to do but when you don't put measures in place to cushion the effect, and abruptly withdraw it without prior planning, inflation and hardship is what you get.
Nigeria does not have a revenue problem, but rather a spending problem.
Re: Tinubu, Sanusi, Subsidies And The Economics Of Empathy By Farooq A. Kperogi by Pythagoras001: 11:28am On Oct 21, 2023
Any sane person would realise that subsidy removal was the way to go. borrowing money to pay fuel subsidy or salaries is not very smart to do. it would be uncharitable to attack the emir for this position. The people behind the subsidy fraud are friends with and embeded within succesive governemnt. their is really no political will to deal with this people and even if you did they would be replaced by new people because it just so lucrative. The issues is how do we remove the fuel subsidy? i believe the staggered approach would have been best like jonathan tried with consultation with nigerians and especially th poltical elite. subsidizing anything that does not directly or indirectly increase productivity is just sink money into a bottomless pit. how many poor people have cars or multiple cars or even generators? kerosene that the poorest of the poor use in cooking is not subsidize. If you want to subsidize consumption which i believe should only be temporary it should be targeted and the money goes directly to the poor. if you want general subsisdy then use that for improving the quality of primary and secondary (vocational) education and university courses that have direct impact on increasing society productivity, efficient and targeted subsidy (poor and goods transport) for mass public transport scheme and the transport networks. subsidizing health also has overall benefit on the society productivity viz a viz only healthy people can work and think. if you want to subsidize food because you want to make it not only cheaper for the society but be internationally competitive fore export then invest in Research and development that would then produce the input required to make the foods cheaper resulting in you having the technology and can even license it to others .

Keep pushing these ideas. You never know

mrvitalis:
All these tinubu paid writers sha

Removing subsidy and floated of naira is the prescribed drugs yes but the method of administration of the said drug and dosage was completely wrong.... The right drug can kill you if administered wrongly

As it stands now we are back worse than we were achieved absolutely nothing... Subsidy is back and naira is pegged... So what exactly did tinubu achieve?

Solutions I stand with Peter Obi on his plan.. We need to do exactly what Zambia did

1) Restructure our loans-yes people would say this would worsen our loan payments long term... Yes I agree but here is the benefits
Right now debt servicing to revenue is over 105%....we can restructure extand payment duration and reduce the amount of payment... If we can reduce payment obligations by 60% that would be ideal
One of the things responsible for dollar scarcity is government mopping up dollars to service debt... If we succeed in the above that demand drops by 60%

2) Look for foreign lenders for stimulus package of say $15 billion to $25 billion - borrow more money? Absolutely yes ... But this loans would not be used for infrastructure payment of salaries or subsidy... This loan would go 100% percent to manufacturers that meets certain conditions at a good interest rate

The conditions
a) manufacturer must be manufacturering a product Nigerians import at a price not more than the landing cost of such a product... You must prove you can produce at that price or lower

b) you manufacturer or produce goods Nigeria can export at a price lower than the international average price

c) you import goods have distribution network and cab prove you can manufacturer same goods you import at your landing cost

Loans would be given to Banks at 3% interest rate to loan at 10% interest rate

Loans can only be used for expanding production

Manufacturers are given 3 years breaks before loan repayment can start

3) use technology to track petroleum usage Egypt and many examples can be copied

If we can get the real daily consumption which I believe is around 30 million litres daily

This is complex but I believe can be achieved... To talk about my proposed methods here would take too much time

With the above done in 6 months to 2 years... A smart president would have saved enough reserve to then float the naira and defend it

We might even find subsidy can be afforded

If you buy food stuffs from farms that use subsidized fertilizer, you have enjoyed subsidy

If you have used Government clinic and hospital in the past you have enjoyed Medical subsidy

The simple truth is Nigeria survival is largely based on Oil and Gas

Buhari already borrowed far more than we can comfortably service, and the Chinese want thier money back

.

Is that you as person don't have shame or your conscience has been sold to the devil? #160 million for a car? To be used by govt official? $1.5 billion for only cars. Can't the govt officials who went to school free subsidy for the masses. These people went to school from primary to university free of charge. All their expenses both for their family are being provided for, why can't they sacrifice small? Don't sell your soul because of #30k.

The GEJ government spent N11.350 trillion on TAM with no results.

In 2021 the Buhari government started investing $2.5 in rehabilitation and upgrading all the refineries. The rehabilitation was with reputable
companies from Italy, Japan and S Korea. I respect your concerns that the government cannot be trusted.
