UN General Assembly ADOPTS resolution on “protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations” on the ongoing Gaza crisis

FOR: 120
AGAINST: 14
ABSTAIN: 45

The resolution calls for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce” between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in Gaza.

According to the U.N. it also demands a “continuous, sufficient and unhindered” provision of life-saving supplies to the people stuck inside Gaza.

The resolution also condemns all violence against Palestinian and Israeli civilians.

Notably, the resolution does not specifically condemn the Oct. 7 surprise attack by Hamas, or mention Hamas at all. There were several amendments that asked for Israel and Hamas to be named in the resolution that failed to get enough support.

It calls for the “immediate and unconditional release” of all civilians being held captive. Hamas took more than 200 people hostage during its Oct. 7 attack.

The resolution is the first formal U.N. response to the Hamas attacks on Israel and Israel’s counteroffensive . Several other measures by the U.N. Security Council have failed to pass or have been vetoed by either the U.S., Russia or China

Israel is rejecting the call for a ceasefire in Gaza approved by the United Nations General Assembly earlier Friday, with the country's foreign minister calling it "despicable" in a post on social media.

Israel rejects call for ceasefire approved by UN General Assembly -CNN

“We reject outright the UN General Assembly despicable call for a ceasefire,” Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “Israel intends to eliminate Hamas just as the world dealt with the Nazis and ISIS.”

Only US, Isreal and 12 other countries, mostly tiny weak Island countries; Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Fiji, Guatemala, Hungary, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Tonga , voted against the adoption of the resolution and they lost woefully!

This is a testament to the seriously diminished power and influence of the United States on global politics on this Palestinian-Israel war.

Even the E.U , Canada and UK didn't vote against the resolution. China, Russia, Jordan, Iran, Pakistan, the Arab League, Turkiye, Ireland, South Africa and Nigeria tried too. It was a momentous event that the world stood together significantly for the Palestinian people.

Sincerely, Humanity won. Over 3000 Palestinian children killed yet Hamas keeps fighting and firing rockets into Israel, giving credence to the report that Israel is actually killing mostly civilians and children.

If Isreal, with all its military power and backing of US and UK , has been fighting a small group of Hamas fighters for weeks now yet the death toll of children and civilians in Gaza keep mounting and Hamas Rockets firings into Israel have not stopped, so who is Isreal deceiving? Who is Isreal been killing for the past few weeks of bombing Gaza? Hamas still fired a lot of rockets into Southern Israel few hours ago!

If after this resolution, Isreal continues the bombing, there will be very serious and severe consequences against Israel. I pray it doesn't get to that. Check my signature for free stuffs!

This is a welcome development, hopefully all the parties in this conflict will abide by it.

I know some people on this forum won't be happy with this, they just want Israel to continue with the indiscriminate bombing of innocent civilians, I don't know the difference between them and Hamas

I also know Some people find it very difficult to believe that I'm supporting the Palestinians instead of Israelis, it is my decision to do so

You can call me a Muslim or Aboki, I don't care, some of you are religious and ethnic bigots and sadists.

Seun should try and remove such accounts abeg

And when Israel ceased fire now, tomorrow u will hear again that hamas has done another again killing innocent Israeli civilians. Does it now mean that the life of those innocent Israeli civilians being cut short doesn't matter?

Un should settle this matter once and for all, and if both parties still decide to be hostile against peace and Un suggestions, then Un should leave them both to settle themselves in whatever ways they want.

Humanity won?
Where was humanity for 17 years that Gaza has been under siege?
The hypocrites UN that turned a blind eyes to US actions in this war?....the US is calling for restraints while sending arms and ammunition to Israel and the UN just stood by idly....if not for China and Russia...US would have hoodwinked the UNSC to attack Gaza with a UN force.

Lol. This is not the first time the US has been mostly alone when it comes to issues in the UN. This vote will not change the situation on ground. Gaza will continue to be bombarded until all the terrorists go get their 72 virgins in heaven. Most of these votes in the UN do not translate to reality on ground.

This is the UN vote calling on Russia to stop it's war on Ukraine. 140 countries joined the US to pass a vote in support of the motion. Since this vote, Russia has carried more attacks on Ukraine.

Just to open mouth waaaah!

Hehehe.

UN resolution is proving to be useless these days grin. Their resolution during Russian and Ukraine war comes to mind.

Israel will continue the bombing, watch and see.

The grandfather of hypocrisy is when some people keep mute while Russian invade Ukraine. While Fulani's continue to massacre people in middle belt. While the killer's of Deborah in Sokoto state are walking free. But all of a sudden, you remember humanity when Israel is bombing Gaza grin cheesy.

The concept of humanity should be holistic, objective not subjective. Some people like to develop selective amnesia once something is against their interest.

Mind you,I don't support the killings of innocent people, but let the people give way so that Israel can sort out the terrorists once and for all.

I know almost all these countries voting against Israel will do the same as Israel if their country and citizens were to be brutally killed.

It's like you are not current. Even US has told Isreal to stop the bombing and US donated $100m for humanitarian supplies for Gaza.

USA opposed the resolution because it lost the vote to get the UNGA adopt its joint draft with Canada to make the UN resolution condemn Hamas and tag it a terrorist organisation. That was humiliating for the US. Remember the UNGA is even holding on US soil o.
US lost big time and China showed them shege.

On your historical claim, please kindly provide proofs of when the UNGA voted against Israel like this and Israel called their bluff and went on bombing for days or weeks after the resolution?smh

It seems you don't know that this resolution is a license for nations to start sanctioning Isreal and giving more support to Hamas. Isreal is a small country of less than 10m , it's not a big country like Russia or China, Iran, Egypt, Nigeria, SA, Turkiye, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Australia, EU, UK, India, Indonesia, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia etc with huge population, huge land mass and rich natural resources deposits .

Sanctions can actually break and weaken Israel. Isreal needs this vital peace and international goodwill the US failed to get it.

Same way the UN stood when Russia attacked Ukraine unprovoked.

This is the motion in the UN calling on Russia to stop it's war on Ukraine. Most countries supported the motion. But has it stopped Russia from further attacking Ukraine? No!

The UN is just like our AU in Africa. Theirs is just talk with little or no action.

This is why many countries are sensible enough to join military blocks like Nato so that any country thinking of attacking them unprovoked (as Russia did to Ukraine) will have to think twice before going on with the plan instead of relying on UN.

If a more powerful nation attacks a weaker nation, there is hardly anything the UN can do except votes and condemnation.

The UN, working so fast? That is unheard of. They should keep deliberating into halfway next year. They love coming to decisions at the tail end of events. Both sides will come to an agreement, Bleep a UN-backed truce.

Sadly so. The UN lost all respect because it's seen as US puppet.
US refuse to join ICC
But the same US using UN is hounding Putin with an ICC arrest warrant......has RUSSIA committed just 1/10 of US atrocities?
Reason it refuse to sign the ICC treaty....US would have been it's first Customer

Dreamer! grin grin grin grin.

Please, provide evidence where the US told isreal to stop bombing Gaza. You lie bro. Nothing like that has happened. In fact, the US is supplying more weapons to Isreal. The US has also sent aircraft carriers and warships to the Mediterranean Sea to prevent other nations in the region from joining the war.

When most other nations joined the US to vote in favour of condemning Russia for attacking Ukraine, and only Russia and china and few other countries were in opposition, it was not humiliating for China and Russia abi? Lol

Please, list the nations who will sanction isreal. Iran and Lebanon? Quit playing! 🤣😂😅

You seems to be clueless how international politics works in the UN,
This resolutions are mere formality they hold no water, only resolutions by the UN security council holds water, nothing else.
The USA never told isreal ti stop bombardment
In fact the USA defence sec Austin even said a ceasefire will benefit hamas and they will use it to regroup,
USA donate aids for the civilians in Gaza, and isreal control's the border, and if you are following the news they are tons of aid in the Egypt border of Gaza waiting to enter Israel.
Isreal only allows what he feels Gaza needs.

The Palestinians has always been the ones attacking first. If they don't attack the Israeli, the Isreali wouldn't have sees such opportunity to be killing them as well.

And for the Palestinian state, the suggestion has been raise before by the world bodies and the Palestinians refused. The Palestinians gave their own conditions, and the Isreali refused. So they should leave them both to be settling themselves over there na.
