Halloween Festival
Halloween is celebrated on the eve of 31st October every year in many Western countries as a day to remember the dead, martyrs and other faithful departed. This year's celebration is coming up this Tuesday 31st October 2023 and will run till Thursday 2nd November 2023.

The 3 days (31st October, 1st November, and 2nd November) collectively are used to honour, remember, and pray for all departed souls who are yet to get to heaven.

To most Nigerians and Africans, the festival may sound alien; but if you are a lover of Western culture and movies, or reside in any of the major Western countries, you may be familiar with the celebration. Please note that this article is meant to educate readers on Halloween and not to argue its right or wrong.

Halloween means having fun. It’s a time for partying, watching movies, telling scary Halloween stories, and, of course, going on outings to fun places.

Christmas Vs Halloween Holiday

Halloween festival is the second most celebrated holiday in the US and UK, with an estimated annual cost of about $10 billion and $2 billion in the United States and the United Kingdom respectively, making it the second most celebrated holiday after Christmas in both countries and many other western countries.

Halloween History

One school of thought states that Halloween celebrations started solely as a Christian holiday, a vigil for All Hallow’s Day celebration mainly in Scotland and Ireland before being exported to North America by the early Irish and Scottish immigrants in the 19th century.

The term Halloween is believed by some to have been derived from “All Hallows Eve” which means the evening before the “Christina holy day” also called “All Saints’ Day” celebrated on the 1st of November and the “All Souls’ Day” celebrated on the 2nd of November.

Another theory believes that Halloween was a Celtic idea; others claimed it was a Germanic influence to remembering the dead at the beginning of winter – a practice celebrated by both Celtic and Germanic-speaking peoples.

A few studies however stated that Halloween celebration was influenced mainly by the Celtic Festival Samhain which has a Pegan origin but was later Christianized by the early church as “All Hallow’s Day” in the 12th century.

Nigerians and their disdain for local festivals once its not Christmas or Sallah.

The whites are proud of their culture and that's why we all know of Halloween today. The same british that sold us Christainity is also indirectly selling us Halloween now.

When are we going to embrace our culture and festivals?

We are quick to label our festival as evil, but easily embrace that of other.

What exactly is our problem?
