Can I get link to send me documents?

AfonjaConehead:

He posted that there are some departments on:
Bridge
Deck
Engine room
Galley.

Electrician (we call them Elecki) falls under engine room and it ain't an easy position o especially for fellas with no onboard electrical experience.
Where I hussle, the position is held by only expatriates.

But that may not mean other companies don't have Nigerian electricians though,so you can always try.
You can also go the op way by becoming a wiper and worth hard and work your way to the top in the engine room... Good luck

Bro there ain't no such position onboard ship especially onboard tankers. You best bet is to work your way to the galley department as a steward then progress as a cook. The chief cook is in charge of the ship provision store under the supervision of his superiors like the chief officer.

Thanks for this

You are not far from the truth..... I think most of the tanker crew are suffering from this act from shipowners

That's why i am sticking with offshore vessels, where i earn better and more flexible time to do other things

Thank God for Saudi Aramco opening lot of offers to Nigerian Seafarers.......

Please if you have links to apply for the Saudi Aramco company you can share it here for the benefit of others.

Day 6(Sunday 13th August,2023)

He said we will try to see them. I now asked him if we were moving today and he said he's not sure. But that didn't I see the Mooring master yesterday. I said no, he then described him. I now asked for his duties he said he will be the one working with AB and Pump man to steer the ship.

I had been hearing that we will be doing STS today but I had not yet known the meaning. So when I got back to my cabin, I asked my cabin mate whether today was our normal routine and he said no, that the CE had said we should rest today. He now told me that STS means ship to ship which means that we will be loading from a ship in high Sea. I now asked him if the ship was in motion if we could enter the bottom platform that we worked yesterday and he said no, which I had also guessed so.

I asked him when he was disembarking and he said maybe in two months plus time. He had earlier told me that he was a cadet which means from Marine school he has to use 12months after which he now sits for an exam to pass out as 4th Engineer. He said the lady in the ECR has also passed out and is a 4th Engineer, one other lady Victoria has also passed out as an electrical cadet, two other remaining ladies too had passed out. I think those two are on the deck.

Day 7( Monday 14th August,2023).

Not much activities today as the engine was started and we proceeded to high sea to conduct the STS transloading. We're now in high sea and the two ships are now side to side. So close that one would think they could collide. But I have been told that that is impossible as they have put fenders to prevent it.

I learnt the goods we are loading will be headed to Delta State Nigeria. So each time our destination/route will be determined by where we are loading the goods and where the owner of the goods that makes the order wants us to take it.

The ship movement is so slow that you might not know It's moving except maybe you are outside. However, inside too you will be feeling the rocking up and down of the ship. After the rest of yesterday work resumes steadily today. The other ship looks bigger and neater than ours..

Day 8(Tuesday 15th August,2023)

The STS is still continuing today. I am informed that the vessel transferring product is known as the mother vessel in this case the vessel we are taking product from. If the reverse is the case then our will be the mother vessel. I noticed from far that it's not only our vessel that's doing STS but other vessels are also doing it.

Looking at the vast sea you will see that as our elders used to say, ' Oju orun to eye fo lai farakanra' meaning the sky is so vast and so enough for the birds to fly without colliding. If you get to the sea too you will know that, ' Ori okun to oko rin lai farakanra' . The sea is so vast enough for the ships not to collide.

A ship is very massive. The mother vessel that is loading us I tried going out to look at it on the marking on it which stops at 13m is just like midway of the ship. That's more than 4 storey building. Anyway back to work today, I mostly did painting. I started with the tank tops at the bottom platform which we had cleaned on Saturday then proceeded to the generator platform. Since I have been told that the CE will not like to see anyone sitting down I have just been doing anything doable from cleaning to cutting rags to painting. Everytime my superiors will just be telling me, easy! easy! die! die! In fact one of the 4th Engineers , the expatriate said today, take it easy, if you finish all the work today what will you do tomorrow. The new Fitter too had earlier said after the second tea time today that, 'Ise ori ship kin tan' Work on the ship does not finish. I was so absorbed in the work (painting) that it was my cabin mate that came to alert me that it was closing time. Later when we were washing hands at the basin he said, 'Baba die die o,.if anything happens to you today your reliever will be on the way tomorrow. I think what they are all trying to tell me was that this thing is a marathon and not sprint. Tedious work continuously for 6months no be moimoi- no be joke o. In marathon you conserve your energy so that it lasts you the whole journey while in sprint you muscle up all your energy as the time is very short.

Back at work today while working near the generators I observed that there are 4 of them all working at the same time. They were all each of 785KW, 1068 BHP, 6 Cycles and 720 RPM. The fenders I had talked about preventing the two ships from colliding I was able to see them today they were made of rubber then tyres were tied round it and were floating. Anytime the two ships try to come close they resist since they are rubber.

Day 9 (16th August,2023)

So today began as usual in the ECR room where the CE said I should empty the bin. Normally we pack the garbage which is mostly of oily rags into dustbin nylon then bag and take to the deck through one of the skylights. But my cabin mate said everybody is busy so I will have to take it up myself. I was thinking how the hell I was gonna do that when the motorman said I should follow the 3rd Engineer that he wants to do something on generator No. 1.

The generator has been spilling oil so I think he wants to check what was wrong so I joined him. He looked at me in the face and said; 'Do you want to learn this work' and I answered him Yes. He said you are not going to be in this level that you are forever. After 12 months on board now you can go and do exams and if you pass you will then apply for oiler. After a few months as oiler you are eligible to do exams and become an officer like me. So if you know you want to learn anytime you see me doing any work come close and see. You should not focus on just cleaning alone just make sure the CE is not available when you are doing that because he doesn't like seeing someone without doing anything. So he now told me that what he wants to check is called centrifugal filter and that the generator also have another filter, the Lube oil filter. He said he wants to check if the spilling of the oil is from there. He now removed the casing and brought out the filter. The O ring which is to serve as the oil seal had cut so he removed it. After we have finished cleaning he then brought the filter and O ring from generator No. 4 to replace the ones we removed. He said he will take the faulty one upstairs to the workshop to loose it and see what was wrong with it. He said I should try to come to see it but the CE was working in the workshop so it was not easy doing that.

Now back to the generator after replacement he tried to run the pump to see if the spilling will continue but that will not be as good as running the generator. He now tried to show me how to start the generator by first opening the air valve which allows air that is used to start it. After that be showed me the buttons used to operate it. .

As I could not stay with him in the workshop I now began to empty the garbage. After like two trips up to the deck, the motorman say I should come to the AC room and that do I know there which I answered in the negative. He said do I know the CCR room and I gave the same answer. He now took me there and I saw the Cargo Control Room (CCR), just looking like the ECR except that it was smaller from there the passage almost opposite it leads to the AC room. The lady 4th Engineer was there bailing water that was leaking from only God knows where. So that was where I used most of my remaining time- bailing water till I got tired. I was about going back to the engine room when one of the oiler said the CE was calling me in his cabin.

Day 9 (contd)

Today's story will not end without me mentioning the fire 🔥 incidence that happened. Just after Magrib prayer. We were just sitting talking when the fire alarm started sounding. Everybody thought it was just the normal sounding so did not quickly react. It was the 2nd officer that first got up then later the rest of us. On getting to the passage we discovered that there was fire outbreak outside. Guess where? The same place I had dropped garbage in the afternoon. That's the garbage station. It was later found out that sparks of soot were coming from the exhaust of the ship's engine and had fallen on the garbage bags which were filled with oily rags. People were panicky and there was scramble to get the fire extinguisher.

The fire was later put out. The cause of people panicking was that we were loaded with PMS( petrol) ,we were in motion and if the fire got out of hands we were in deep shit. We Nigerians risk things sha, iSe e ri pe owo Olohun la wa. Do you see that our safety is in the hands of Allah?

Day 10 (17th August, 2023)

On the condition of the lifeboat,my cabin mate said we had two and they were both functional. That they do had training and drills on how to manage emergencies every two weeks and the last one was held on the Sunday before I came.

Today after ECR room briefing, the 2nd Engineer instructed me to go and clean where they had removed one of the pumps for repair at the bottom platform. Also myself and my cadet cabin mate were assigned generator No. 4 for general cleaning and maintenance so that was my first port of call before I went down to the bottom platform.

From there the 4th Engineer came to tell me that China, one of the oilers was responsible for Gen. Unit 1(No. 1) but he was not around so I should check there when I finished. So I went there too and did the cleaning since I didn't check time so I thought it was close to 1000 tea break so I decided to rinse my hands and go up to my cabin. I hadn't finished before motorman came to call me to say there was water in the boiler room up the engine room platform.

We were bailing the water when notice of meeting at the bridge came. So we all had to go except the motorman that we left to stay back at the engine room.
At the meeting the fire incidence was discussed and deliberated upon. People were asked if anyone could state the possible cause/causes and solutions for the future. The pumpman opened the floor telling of his experiences from previous ships. From his observation the fire was caused by sparks coming from the soot through the exhaust to the garbage station.

The CE didn't seem to agree and at every point was trying to avoid any blame or responsibility been pushed to him. There were some other discussions but the captain finalized that henceforth fire rounds should be observed and report given via the walkie talkies and not phone as he wants to be hearing it in his cabin. Also that the position of the garbage station should be changed and henceforth no oily rags should be brought down to the Deck until MARPOL( the port authority in charge of Marine waste disposal) comes.
