The topic and the message are two different things. Mama this and mama that , please don't blame the children completely. We are in a busy world right now were verybody is struggling to survive.
You wi have 500k today and next week you are looking for a friend to borrow you 5k to buy food. We all pay bills everyday..The only fault the children had was not getting r a house help..

Good point
Life is highly unprudictable
The way things appear to u may not really be true pictures of things.

This kind question makes one admire couples who marry, refuse to reproduce, work hard, save for retirement and their burial, too. Selfish Abi?

Which kind question be this?

So people get married, give birth and use all their resources to bring up their children and you are asking this question?

This poverty mentality is why Nigeria is a mess.
Poor man has 7 children contributing nothing to society.

You are supposed to make enough money in your youth to retire on.
You are deeply stupid.

What a shortsighted conclusion.

You have something against JAPA and that's why you are blind to see that the woman's death had nothing to do with Japa.

Nigeria is not North Korea where those abroad cannot send money home.

cheesy its JAPA that destroyed the cohesive unit of that family . plain and simple. THE CURSE OF JAPA

Retirement benefits for uneducated, ignorant, poverty stricken, shallow minded African parents.
When you're mates were hustling, what were you doing?
Innocent kids have now turned to try& luck; if one no enter another one go enter.

Nothing is guaranteed in life. However, as long as you are here, you've got to live it good and leave the things you can't control to nature.

Above all, take your mind off your parents. They are gone for good and there's nothing you can do about it. At least, they lived their life.

The race of life is a lone game. Focus on your life and make no excuses regarding your parents. There's nothing they can do for you right now and you can still succeed big because your life or success doesn't depend on them.

All you need to do is to build up yourself; get yourself ready for life, and the lines will fall in place for you.

From the way people sound, you know their level of thinking
But I won't join issues with you.
There are people who do not have more than a child, but things are very difficult for them still. Just thank God for your life, and stop thinking those that has not made it are lazy, or stupid. Life can happen to anyone. Stop being proud. Cos we've seen those that where up yesterday stay down today. Lastly pride goeth before a fall. Use this information however you deemed fit

Taking care of a child should not deprive the parents from having a good life.

It's like most didn't read the post only the title.

The poster said money was not the problem for the woman.

The problem is the children didn't make adequate preparation for old aged care for their mum while they are scattered all over the world. That's quite terrible if you ask me.

Old age can come with sickness of its own, old people need people around. If you are out of the country or out of town make provision for all these things, they need companions they need care. Even if you have the money, you can't cook for yourself take care of your self.

A child nearby can make all the difference, visiting them can make the difference.

Everyone will grow old someday and will need support from family.

It is in our culture to look after our aged ones.
ā€œTi Okete ba dagba, Omu omo re ni o maa muā€.
Itā€™s a Yoruba saying that when you grow old, you fall back to your children.
Mamaā€™s children are sadly useless.
No form of civilization should make us abandon our parents. We donā€™t have good care system for our elderly ones as we see in other climes. I blv itā€™s our responsibility.
I look after my frail dad, even though I havenā€™t seen him in about 1 year now.
I have a live-in carer on my payroll and he attend his clinic every week.
It cost me about 200k monthly to achieve this. Iā€™m fine with it. Heā€™s frail now, canā€™t stand on his feet anymore.
I feel bad myself as I had promised him that Iā€™ll personally take care of him myself, which Iā€™m now doing by proxy.
I canā€™t afford to give him this level of care if I had stayed back in Nigeria, where I can barely earn the amount I spend on him monthly.

Thank you! We opted for the resident carer option for my parents. The company sends them on 3 months rotation and they live comfortably in house with the old folks. The carers are mostly fresh graduates trying to raise some money while looking for better job. They are all well screened by the company. Just do your research as I'm sure there are many of such companies growing across Nigeria.

Nigerians need to start embracing these options. For serious investors, it's also a good growing market in Nigeria and it solves a major problem especially for those in diaspora or too busy in the big cities in Nigeria.

In fact no matter how small, people should explore ways to start saving towards their own carer cost while still young so you are not fully dependent on anyone.

delpee:
Sometimes, a child's circumstances makes it difficult to give adequate attention to parents. However, there are social welfare organisations now that manage the elderly. You can have resident carers or opt for a well managed old people's home. Most parents (if not too lonely) are happier and do better being cared for at home by trained carers. Not random househelps please.

In addition, health insurance takes care of medical matters. All they need is to jointly arrive at the best option and raise funds to carry out their plan.

A good child who is unable to visit regularly or accommodate a parent can opt for this. Good parents sacrifice a lot to look after their children. Abandoning them in old age isn't fair. Even if they're rich, being in touch with them and providing meaningful advice helps them to live a good life notwithstanding old age challenges.

samuelson06:
I don't really have a problem with children being their parent's retirement plan. The design is that children should take care of their aged parents and I don't see anything wrong with that. Where I seriously have a problem is when parents don't invest in their children to become successful in life and simply focus on making more children and by God's grace one of the children escapes poverty with little or no contribution from the parents, then you see them coming to lay claims of the child and complaining to the world how the child has abandoned them.

For God's sake, this is a child that suffered so much and alone to become successful and instead of you allowing the child to begin investing in their future and family and stamp out poverty in their own lineage, you are coming to complain about negligence. Must everyone be poor in the family?

From my observation in Nigeria, poor parents don't care about their children. They don't even pray for them to succeed. All they are interested about is what they can get from the children because they feel it's the children's responsibility to take care of them. They don't care about lifting even one to escape poverty in the family so in future, that one can also save others. They care only about themselves. They don't care about the endemic poverty in the family.
You're obviously a kid!!

Who took care of you from infancy, feeding and clothing you to even age 10 deserves anything from you.
Do you know what it means to feed, cloth and house someone for 10 good years??

Even if that's the only thing your father did for you, he has tried!

Such parents shouldn't even bother having children? I am certain the kids wouldn't complain if they weren't born. undecided

It's a product of life style and environment. In western countries people live up to 90years they stay alone and still drive themselves...if need be they check into an old people's home But here in Nigeria, entitlement mentality reins supreme.
It's the state of the economy here, it's relatively easy to navigate the economic weather their unlike what's obtainable here in Africa. This is the one the reasons fueling japa too, your children can even graduate here and still have no reasonable job not to talk of taking care of their parents.

Some westerners decided not to even have kids not to talk of using them as a retirement plan.
