I understand that humans are corrupt but why is it difficult for African leaders to be sensible or at least have some shame when they travel abroad and see how developed those places are?! Why? Why please?

They are evil and disgusting, all of them including us, the citizens of this disgrace called a continent! Mr. Beast's latest philanthropy has exposed the mediocrity and wickedness in our land! Bunch of losers!

Misplaced Priorities: Lagos' Extravagant Spending in Dire Times

By Abdullahi Musa Yaro

Date: November 20, 2023

In a time when the citizens of Lagos State are grappling with the hardships of a harsh economy, it is disheartening to learn about the recent approval of extravagant spending by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Allocating ₦73.1 million for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu's portrait and ₦44 million for vegetables is a clear example of misplaced priorities and a disregard for the pressing needs of the people. Such reckless spending not only highlights a lack of empathy but also undermines the trust and faith the citizens have placed in their leaders.

The economic challenges faced by the people of Lagos State are numerous and should be the primary concern of the government. The high cost of living, unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to quality healthcare and education are just a few of the pressing issues that demand immediate attention. It is inconceivable that in the face of such hardships, the government would approve such exorbitant expenditures that offer no tangible benefits to the citizens.

Allocating ₦73.1 million for a portrait of a prominent political figure is both excessive and unnecessary. While recognizing the contributions of leaders to society is important, it should never come at the expense of the people's well-being. The funds allocated for this purpose could have been better utilized to address the dire needs of the state. For instance, investing in job creation programs, improving healthcare facilities, or providing quality education would have a far-reaching and positive impact on the lives of Lagosians.

Similarly, the allocation of ₦44 million for vegetables is an egregious example of fiscal irresponsibility. While a balanced diet is crucial for a healthy population, it is unjustifiable to allocate such a significant amount of money solely for this purpose. Instead, the funds could have been channeled towards initiatives that promote agricultural development, such as providing farmers with improved agricultural inputs, supporting agribusinesses, or implementing programs to enhance food security.

Lagos State, as Nigeria's economic hub, should lead by example, demonstrating prudence and responsible governance. The current economic climate demands that every penny be spent judiciously, taking into account the urgent needs of the people. It is imperative that the government reevaluates its spending priorities and redirects resources to sectors that will have a direct impact on poverty alleviation, job creation, and sustainable development.

Rather than squandering millions of naira on unnecessary endeavors, the government should prioritize investments in critical areas. Some alternative areas of importance that warrant urgent attention include:

1. Infrastructure Development: Allocate funds to repair and maintain existing infrastructure, improve road networks, expand public transportation systems, and provide reliable power supply. These investments will enhance productivity, attract investment, and improve the overall quality of life for residents.

2. Education and Skills Development: Invest in quality education, vocational training, and entrepreneurship programs to equip citizens with the necessary skills to compete in the job market and foster innovation and economic diversification.

3. Healthcare Services: Enhance healthcare infrastructure, equip hospitals and clinics with modern facilities, and ensure the availability of affordable and accessible healthcare services for all residents.

4. Job Creation and Empowerment: Implement initiatives that encourage entrepreneurship, provide access to capital, and promote the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. This will foster economic independence, reduce unemployment, and alleviate poverty.

5. Social Welfare Programs: Allocate funds to support vulnerable populations, including the provision of social safety nets, healthcare subsidies, and assistance programs for the elderly, disabled individuals, and single-parent households. This will ensure that basic needs are met, and the most marginalized members of society receive the necessary support.

6. Environmental Conservation: Invest in sustainable development projects, renewable energy sources, waste management systems, and initiatives to combat pollution and preserve the natural resources of Lagos State. This will contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for current and future generations.

7. Security and Law Enforcement: Allocate resources to enhance security measures, improve police infrastructure, and provide training for law enforcement personnel. This will create a safer environment for residents and promote the rule of law.

8. Youth Development: Implement programs that empower and engage the youth through sports, arts, and cultural initiatives, as well as vocational training and mentorship programs. Investing in the youth will foster their potential, reduce social vices, and create a more vibrant and productive society.

It is high time for the government of Lagos State to prioritize the needs and aspirations of its citizens over extravagant and unnecessary spending. The allocation of ₦73.1 million for a portrait and ₦44 million for vegetables is a clear reflection of a lack of empathy and fiscal responsibility. The people of Lagos State deserve better. It is imperative that the government reevaluates its spending decisions and redirects resources towards sectors that will truly uplift the lives of its residents. By doing so, the government can restore the faith and trust of the people and steer Lagos State towards a brighter and more prosperous future.

Military government is the best, it’s very hard to find this kind of extravagant spending in the military system of government unlike their clueless democratic system of government in Nigeria and Africa in general. As far as I’m concerned, Nigeria democratic system of government will never work cos’ of looting set of elites we called leaders. Funniest thing is that they are just changing set of looters till the whole system of looting collapse on their heads. Military system of government is the best. It’s best we know the reality now.

All these can never be made public in a military regime

25 years after Abacha's demise, we are still recovering his loot. If he were still alive, he'd still be enjoying it like IBB and co.

Will Nigerian citizens ever learn to grow some balls against these lots who have taken them for a ride since 1990?

Nigerians suffer, adjust, and smile enjoying their so-called dividend of democracy.

No country has ever evolved either without a great leader or a popular revolt.
