One may have resentment towards or even despise Nigeria, but renouncing one's citizenship of Nigeria is sheer stupidity.

You can love and give everything to a country that gave you what your country couldn't give you, but never renounce the citizenship of your own country.

I read the UN convention and Article 8 section 2(b) actually allows a country to revoke someone’s citizenship if it was obtained fraudulently, regardless of whether it would render them stateless or not

On first read, it seemed like a case of a hubristic professor that either misjudged the efficiency of SA systems or misjudged the amount of enemies with an axe to grind I.e. his ex, but your post makes me see how the renunciation could have been a strategic move if he anticipated this happening, and wanted to stymie deportation

If he's now stateless, then where was he expelled to ?
This report makes no sense.
A person can not be rendered stateless according to international law.
