we igbos love Amala. and we dont want to claim it. we know how to enjoy other peoples culture without claiming it. unlike some people who cant stand the fact that igbos invented egusi.
I'm ijebu from eastern part of Lagos. Amala and ewedu is not our native food. But egusi and eba with obe ata is an ancient food here. The igbo way of cooking egusi is different from that of my grandmother.
The Yoruba egusi is different from igbo egusi, the egusi we mostly eat in lagos is the igbo egusi but there is the yoruba version also.
I think its a west African food

Egusi is the yoruba word, Egwusi is ibo. Lots of people are familiar with Egusi than Egwusi.
They loaned the word from us and added "w" and tried to claim it as theirs.

No you can keep your poison. He is telling you pure facts. You guys are so narrow minded...you think only your ancestors planted egusi over the years?
Something they even borrowed from us. In some years time, they would want to claim amala too 😂

The ones mostly eaten in Lagos Yoruba household are Yoruba egusi (cooked with palm oil and often always mixed with iru/locust beans and vegetables..It's only Ijebu that eat the watery egusi without vegetables.

The one sold in Igbo restaurants usually has a different taste from the Yoruba ones..I am not sure if the Igbo one is cooked without palm oil, but it definitely taste different than the common ones eaten in Yoruba homes. Never has iru but has lot of fish.

I still ate Abacha not long ago here in Canada prepared for me by my Igbo friend. It was different and will surely take a while for my taste bud to adjust but I really liked it. Even though I grew up in Lagos, I never had a chance to try it.

Lol.. Why exactly would a person be threatened by people gathering to eat a meal?

A good number of those people may have resided in the South West at one point or the other, and got endeared to the delicacy.

It's unlikely I'd be caught travelling a far distance just to eat 'a foreign dish' but that's more to my dislike to spending time on the road than anything. Either ways, it's no reason to invalidate their choice of being there.

Nobody owns egusi . It’s like saying you own Yam because you eat Amala which is made from dried Yam (elubo). Other people eat yam too but prepared in a different way .

Maybe yoruba first called it egusi or maybe other tribes first called it egusi , it’s irrelevant .
The plant is grown across west Africa almost to central africa . And it’s are called different names .

The difference here (and most important thing) is how it’s prepared differently. The way egusi was prepared historically in yorubaland has changed .
Yoruba used to cook egusi without oil and it stays white and they prepare stew separate .
Then they dish the stew on top of the white egusi . But now most yoruba families don’t cook cook it like that anymore . They copied the Igbo way of cooking it .

So the method of cooking is what’s important and the common method we have today definitely originated from Igboland.

This is another blatant lie and you are ultimately confirming or rather rephrased what your kinsmen were claiming earlier after you realized they were very wrong.
They earlier claimed that egusi was invented by the ibos—an erroneous claim that was later busted because egusi in Igbo language is not even called egusi but eliri (I’m not sure I got the spelling right) and many other igbos confirmed it to be a borrowed word.
It’s very wrong to say you invented a particular food that is and was being eaten by a vast number of people across different cultures and races and mind you, other tribes are only being defensive here because your kinsmen started this claim as a result of their shameful insecurity and low self-esteem because in Yoruba land and so many other regions, nobody would be mad or give a f*uck over other people’s decision to host a hangout celebrating Oha soup and Apku in the heart of Oyo or Kaduna. I won’t feel threatened over the plan of a group of youths to celebrate tuwo shinkafa or fura di nunu in Lagos or Ile Ife in Osun and in fact, I and many of my tribesmen would gladly join in celebrating with them without harboring the slightest of hate.
The events that preceded this very amala hangout is shameful to say the least. Why are you people pained Chinedu? I was even concerned about the safety of the people who would attend the gathering. Come on, ibos could have done better, It’s just an ordinary food, it doesn’t bite na grin

I wonder why some people were angry that some people are trying a different food from another tribe. This Amala stuff caused so much anger on twitter when it was advertised.

The Igbo restaurants in Lagos, na Yoruba dey patronise am most. Every once in a while, people like to try something different. Diversity is the spice of life!

When it comes to food, yorubas would never discriminate. All over the SW, we dey eat Ghana jollof sold by Ghanaian Hausa sellers, Tuwo shinkafa sold by Hausas, Eba Igbo with goat peppersoup (as we fondly call it) sold by plates in igbo owned restaurants, Ewa agoyin sold by Togolese people, mey tea by Hausa sellers e.t.c. all these foods from different region including the regular Yoruba ones like ofada rice and mama put (ilafun, Amala, iyan e.t.c) made my childhood sweet.

Not true. An average Yoruba person that eats out alot will eat 40% other regions (Ibo, Hausa, Togolese, Akwa Ibom/calabar e.t.c) foods and 60% Yoruba foods.

Neither do other tribes discriminate.

It's just that in every tribe, there are always a few senseless bigots who take things too far in trying to please their slave-drivers.

They're everywhere. North, East, West, South.

Unfortunately for them, the politicians they sell their destinies to all wine, dine & celebrate together regardless of their tribe/religion and even inter-marry.

Yet they want to have us accept that we are the intolerant ones while they are the saints.
I’m surprised to see so much uproar from these primitive people (my sincere apologies to the few free-spirited ones who are right in the heads) over an ordinary food just because it’s from another culture. If they could do this to innocent amala and ewedu, what would they do to the owners of the food if they had the chance? grin
Now tell me why a right-thinking, industrious person from the SS, Northern or the Western region would want to live or invest in the midst of people who harbor so much biles in their hearts?

Egusi is eaten and prepared in different ways all over West Africa. Try and travel so you won't be so limited in cultural awareness.

In Gambia/Senegal they eat theirs with rice and call it supa kanja.

If you claim it originated from your tribe, no problems but what is the evidence for that claim?
