I can't believe all the manner of assumptions here. I'm just having a laugh.

The popular motorbike brand in the early 90s then in Lagos was Okada from Japan.

I am 100% certain of this because our house had a mechanic village - it was a motorcycle village. And each day, some bikes ended up parked in our compounds overnight and as a little child who was fascinated by these machines, I'd sneak up in the evenings to go sit on the ones parked in our compound. Though I was in my latter days in primary school, I could string basic words together and one of them was the "Okada" boldly engraved on those motorcycles.

Take this to the bank!!

Lol! I don't know much? Are you kidding me? You call him "Lucky Igbinedion's father". We called him Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion. When Lucky ran for Edo governor under NRC against Oyegun in 1992 and lost, we were there. When one of Esama's son shutdown the country to live broadcast his wedding nationwide on NTA late in the 80s, we were there. When Munday's kitchen was the primary catering contractor for Okada Airways, we were there. So no come dey tell me "U obviously don't know much"
Veteran like u suppose know the whole story. Okada was pioneer in motorcycle transport.
Young ones need the history bra.....brake dancer like you.

At the time motorcycles became widely used for public transportation, Yamaha was the brand of choice in Nigeria. Never ever heard of Okada as a bike brand until now

Whats the origin of the word okada?
Okada Air owned by late Chief Igbenedion was a popular airline then, motorcycles had just started being used as a mode of public transportation and because of their speed like ground flights, people started calling them Okada

How can you confidently tell people to take falsehood to the bank. I am old enough to know how the word okada originated. And those saying that it was derived from Okada Air, Nigeria's first private airline, are correct. I remember there was a football player then that was also popularly called Okada Air because of his speed or prowess with headings. Davidson Owumi, I think is his name.

In the early 1980's Okada was the pioneer location of commercial cyclist. Okada in the then Bendel and now Edo state.
Wrong!

When Bike riders came out they were seen as a faster option through traffic and hence nicknamed okada after the then most dominant airline - Okada Air.

Why they are called OKADA.
OKADA is a town in Edo State.
Osas began Osin
Osin began Ewin
Ewin began Edwin
Edwin began Osewinge
Osewinge began igbeniedon
Igbeniedon began Eruda
Eruda began Anini
Anini began Idehen
Idehen began Onua
Onua began Aidevoh
Aidevoh began Deloje
Deloje began Oshimole
Oshimole began Aibudefe
Aibudefe was the first man to start using bike for transport in Lagos in earlier 60's.

Mind you his great/great/grandfather (Osas) are from OKADA.

If you don't get it forget about it.
grin grin grin

Bike taxis were named Okadas after Okada airlines for being able to quickly navigate out of traffic unlike buses or taxis.

Fools everywhere.

I am sure you are not aware of Okada airlines and how it was once one of the biggest airliners in Africa.

Okada Airlines was owned by Igbenedion until it folded up.

Igbenedion named the airline after his ancestral town - Okada that is located in the outskirts of Benin city.

Okada Air

Modifed

For people of a certain age, the premier private airline in Nigeria in the 1980's was Okada Air, founded by Chief Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom. (It was one of two airlines, the other being Kabo Air, which operated out of Kano).

Here is the etymology of the word vide Wikipedia

Not everywhere calls motorcycles Okada. In the North, they are called Achaba or 'going' or at one time 'Express'.

Modifed 2...Below, pictures of Okada air planes (first one taken in Luxembourg in 1985). The airline existed from 1983-97

P.S I am old. Must go play with the great grandchildren grin
The then newly bike taxis were nicknamed after Okada airlines for able to navigate traffic quickly.

There used to be an airline called okada

It was based in Benin.

If I recall the name was attached to bikes because of the speed to your destination. And alot of edo slang seems to be organic. Most car nicknames also originated from edo.
This is the correct answer. Getting on a motorcycle in Lagos traffic was like flying to your destination both in terms of speed and the wind hitting you as you ride.

MKO Abiola was once got out of his car In traffic to get on a motorcycle because he was late and it became headline news.

It is, "OK, ada" a man was traveling somewhere and his daughter that her name is ada, was telling him bye bye buy me this buy that and motorcycle man was coming the man was waving for him to come, and was telling his daughter ada is ok, a pass by that saw them then thought that he was calling the motorcycle man okada. That was how the name started ok, Ada to okada.
