Meet Prince Ekaladerhan of Benin, popularly known as Oduduwa
Go and read the history book 📖 there was a prophesy that a man will come from foreign land to save ife from the great Oyó Empire.

Ikaladeran the crown prince of Bini who left his kingdom with his full entourage was found in the forest of ife by hunters in his full regalia

He was taken to the town and treated with respect and given a warm welcome, it was then he said “Izoduwa” meaning “I have reached home” they didn’t understand what he said because he was speaking Bini language. So all they heard was Oduduwa and that how his name came about.

He helped them win their freedom from Oyo empire and was made king afterwards, he got married and had children. Many years later he was asked to come back and rule his people, he refused because of the dispute he had with them that made him leave in the first place.

After much pressure he told them he is already an established king in ife with wives and children that it’s imposible to leave so he sent his 7th son Oromiyan to rule in his place because he was the only son not married as at then. As the Oba of Benin MUST marry a Bini princes.

Before now the kings in Bini kingdom are called Ogiso not Oba, Oromiyan who came to the palace through Useh was given a wife by the leader in Useh community under Bini kingdom.

Oromoiyan refused to be crowned Ogiso he said he prefers the name Oba, he later left because he felt the kingdom was too violent and warring, fortunately the wife he was given was pregnant, she gave birth to a male child who became the first Oba of Benin and not Ogiso of Ighodomighodo which was the real name .

Lol

Oduduwa's Ife precedes Oyo kingdom

How can Benin send a prince to save Ife from Oyo that was non existent by the time of Oduduwa

Infact Benin wasn't existing as a kingdom then because it was the same prince that established Benin kingdom that also established Oyo

And the prince came from Ife (A descendant of Oduduwa)

Oduduwa was long dead when Oyo was founded

I wonder how some people don't use their brain when hearing gibberish.

It was Ife which birthed Oyo empire. So what freedom are you even talking about? Lol 😂As a matter of fact, Oranmiyan was ruling Oyo and Bini at the same time but couldn't rule two at a time thus had to leave for Oyo, even though the Bini didn't want him to leave for Oyo, thus were angry after he left.

Meanwhile, Oduduwa predates the whole existence of Bini. Before Ekaledehan who died in Ughoton was even born, Oduduwa already became an Ife king long ago. Oduduwa descended from Oke Ora to Ife to become the King after Obatala. Now, can you see the name "Oba"Tala? Ife birthed other towns.

So what does oba mean in Benin Morphology

Explain pls

You realise bini and other languages of southern Nigeria are from the Niger-Congo language family

And yes there are converging linguistic links here and there

For example

Oba in ìgbo means Barn for yams and other produces

Obà still means that plant used in making calabash

So don't brag about origin of word with people you're in same language family with

It ight mean something in their language you never can tell

If na lie ask any Igbo person wetin Olaniyi means in Igbo grin you'll be shocked

Does Oba mean anything in Benin Language

It's either yes or no

Talking about Igbo Language is very irrelevant here

Because Oba in Igbo doesn't mean what it means to the Benins or what it means in Yoruba, so it's out of point 👌

In Yoruba, O - ba means King, he who presides...

In Benin, explain how oba means King, simple

If Ooni of Ife turns up in benin and Claims the Throne and Kingdom of benin he too is also right

Ok, Let us look at the praise names of oba of benin

One of it is
Abieyuwa N'Ovbi Odua N'uhe
The son of the wealthy Odua of Uhe(Ife).
(Odua of Ife is the same as oduduwa of Ife)

Another of oba of benin's praise names is

Ovbi' Adimila
The son of Adimila
oduduwa was also known as Olofin Adimula
Which was his Title

Notice there is no mention at all of any Ekhalerderhan of Igodomigodo or izoduwa that got lost

They did not remember or mention any Ekhalerderhan and izoduwa too is not happening anywhere in oba of benin's praise names but they called Oduduwa the great Odua of Ife his Father

So with their own mouths they themselves have already given the evidence that fully demolished and destroyed their case which had no legs to stand on in the first place and have confirmed with your own Mouth that the oba of benin was indeed oduduwa's Son
There is nothing left to drag because it is settled

I am a Linguist

If you're a linguist you'd know that

Words can be borrowed from people you've made contact with and doesn't necessarily means they don't have a word for it . They just prefer to use the borrowed word

I had a conversation about this topic with my friend yesterday . He's actually a linguist , He said it's absolutely possible to replace a local word by a borrowed word from another neighbouring language. According to him it's called Lexical replacement or loan word replacement.
It happens alot especially with society you've come in contact with and it's the basis of English language . English is 80+% loanwords! So what's the fuss about.

Ok now

When u loan a word from a language to call something

It usually means that that same thing was not present in your environment before

It's usually that you borrowed that thing and the name it's called

If you have that thing before, you will have a name for it

To the best of my knowledge, the benins used to have Ogiso, which is a duke

When Yoruba introduced Kingship to them, the name came with it naturally

Not necessarily true

For example

I can say "

That's your mom over there ọkwa ya?

But I always prefer saying

That's your mom over there abi?

Abi is Yoruba word and ọkwa ya is igbo word for same thing 'right'

It's just convinience

Yeah

That's why I said 'usually'

Some words are just used because of its popular usage and acceptability

But when u borrow a thing from a language, u often borrow the name with it, for example Pressing iron, in Yoruba it is still "Iron"

Table is still Table or "Tabili'

I disagree sir!

While Ashewo is Yoruba word.
Ashawo is a broken English word, that was borrowed from Ashewo.

Ibos choose that word from the broken side of things. Yes broken English popularize Ashawo as the preferred word for prostitution. And broken English is not specific to Ibos, it’s spoken across west Africa. Even my Liberian and Sierra Leon friends use Ashawo without knowing its origin but know that it means prostitute.
