Nigerian Woman, Rhoda Jatau Regains Freedom From Bauchi Prison After 18 Months Over Video Condemning Deborah Samuel’s Murder
A Bauchi State health care worker, Rhoda Jatau, has regained her freedom after spending a harrowing 18 months in incarceration for condemning the killing of Samuel Deborah in Sokoto State.

Jatau was released on bail on Friday following interventions by human rights activists, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council and the Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria.

“We are pleased to report that Mrs Rhoda has been granted bail and subsequently released from detention today. We have high hopes that the case will end in praise. Let’s continue to uphold her in our prayers. The leadership of NIREC played a key role. Praise be to our God”, an official confirmed on Friday.

SaharaReporters had in November reported that Jatau was arrested by the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in May 2022 after she shared a video that condemned the lynching of the Christian female student of Sokoto College, Deborah Samuel, accused of blasphemy by Islamic fanatics in Sokoto.
Jatau had faced charges of inciting public disturbance, “exciting contempt of religious creed,” and cyberstalking.

The prosecution had since closed its case but the defence’s attempt to present its no-case argument was repeatedly stalled as the presiding judge defers court dates and the trial experiences a prolonged timeline. The submission was eventually made on October 16 at a hearing witnessed by Jatau’s husband, Ya’u Adamu, and other observers.

The court had earlier admitted the interpretation of Jatau sharing of a social media video as offensive to extant laws and her lawyers would now work to prove that her action was justified rather than the initial stance that her action did not constitute the offences alleged.

Her arrest and prolonged detention had raised international concerns with the United Nations and organisations such as Christian Solidarity International expressing worry. They had contended that Jatau’s incarceration represents an infringement on her fundamental rights to freedom of expression, religion or belief.

Of concern is the repeated denial of bail to Jatau. The United Nations and CSI underscore that the denial of bail not only restricts her freedom but also raises questions about the fairness and proportionality of the legal measures taken against her.

Deborah, a 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was brutally murdered after advising against sending religious materials on a WhatsApp page.

Good news, the public outcry has forced the authorities to release her.

She must be compensated and the people responsible should be dealt with

Her fundamental human rights were infringed on for 18 months without trial for sharing the truth! A nation that hates the truth cannot believe in justice. And without justice we're no better than animals in human skin! cool

Nigeria is a funny country where an honest and truthful person will languish in prison for telling Truth while crooks, dishonest and criminals are rewarded with luxury and political power.

Woman thank God that you came out alive because many people have gone to the world beyond without committing any crime.

These Northern fvvls don’t deserve money got from the south. That’s why the south is suffering. Core North should go and join their brethren in Niger Republic. Until they do, this country will keep suffering. They should go and practice their yeye religion in Niger Republic.

Deborah Samuel was gruesomely killed. Her killers were well known fanatics who gleefully made videos and post on the social media. They were greatly helped to escaped justice because they have highly connected biased and bigoted fellow fanatics in govt.

But her defenders who advocated for justice to be done are incarcerated to add salt to injury. So much injustice in the warped contraption of a country.

Chai! The DSS is really failing with its responsibilities. What happened to fishing out the killers who are the ones commiting atrocious and treasonable acts? Why the victim and those baying for justice?

God one from CAN. Christians must stand up for all Christians all over Nigeria held unjustly.
Let me remind us of EzeNdigbo of Ajao Estate held by the Lagos state government over allegations of threatening to invite IPOB to Lagos to defend properties of Ndigbo being burnt by MC Oluomo boys. No crime was committed by him and he was arrested whereas, MC Oluomo boys already attacked Igbos and other non-Yorubas in Lagos both during the 2023 election and shortly after it. He is walking a free man despite his incitement and threats that has seen some Igbo dominated markets attacked and burnt.
We are reminding everyone to speak up now because when it will get down, no one should complain.

If I were Rhoda, I will just relocate from Bauchi state to another state far from the North.
Those Idiots will still go after her and family if she remains in the North.

Not because she shared the truth.

they would get worse compared to what they made the innocent girl faced imagine all the monsters that were involved in her killing weren't brought to face justice but the woman lamenting and condemning their monstrous act was jailed. Hypocrites at the helm of affairs.
