The goods are now too expensive
Nigerians have very low purchasing power
These shops cannot make profit servicing only the few rich people in the country.
They are better off in a country with a buoyant middle class......

More shops will be closed, more foreign companies will leave as well.

Your Trade minister also has no clue what she is doing, you need someone who is tested and trusted, you can re-allocate her to another ministry, but get a trade minister thats ready on day one.

The senate should also start inviting all these ministers and questioning them on what are the measures they are taking to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians. Tinubu should send another ministerial list to senate for clearance at least 2 for each potential ministry, so that the current ones can sit up and know that they are replaceable(Call them reserve bench ministers). We dont have to go through 4 years to know a non-performing minister !!!

Also, that mistaken identity bombing, No country should bomb its own citizens, In a civilized country thats
1-Grounds for impeaching the president. (You are the commander in chief, you swore an oath to serve and protect Nigerians).
2-The Army officer in-charge should have submitted his resignation honorably.
3-There should have been a ruthless senate hearing , where the army should have been cut to size and held accountable, killing Nigerian citizens mistaken for terrorists is high up there as treason in a country thats not at war ?? Even Ukraine,Russia,Hamas and Isreal are not killing their own citizens by mistake.

Sweeping this under the carpet shows weakness from a Commander in Chief.

Please Stop singing that song "Bola on your mandate"......You make the whole government look like a circus. It only makes the Commander in chief look like the Commander in Clowns[/b]
You have made very valid points and you are full of wisdom. Even you will perform better than majority of the people the druglord appointed as minister.
Nigeria is sinking daily and some miscreants even here are still driving this useless government to his grave. Just wait for one zombie to respond to the things you have with stated with "you are ipob Tinubu is the best thing to happen to Nigeria". It's a pity sharing this country with brainless zombies.

if a small store like Shoprite ceases to operate in a so-called big economy like Nigeria, there really must be an economic problem because this store is never closes here in SA, it's a bottom-tier store for the poor, working class

Stocking the same brand of products per store regardless of customer expectations and business/cultural environment.

For example, Shoprite Kano does not stock Arabian perfumes while Sahad has a dedicated section for perfumes from the Middle East.

That is wrong, then. Dem no try. The south is westernised, the north is middle-eastern. Adapt or die.

Dem don die. Thanks for the other article.

The competition is the major reason why ShopRite left Kano. There are many big outlets in Kano, that you can not just put a higher price on your goods

When Tinubu talked about this unification or floating of Naira, i knew it was a very wrong move and made a comment against it.

Those that pegged Naira and dollar at an official rate, they are not mad. They had a reason for doing so.

But he came in and with his zero understanding of economics, turned everything upside down. All he's after is increase tax, increase revenue and loot. People like FreeStuffsNG will make noise about things they know nothing about.
This is the first class.

In life, there's time for everything. If you do the right thing at the wrong time, you spoil it. All he has been doing is at the wrong time. Removal of subsidy, floating of the naira etc. Tinubu lacks wisdom, he's just strategic in his greed. I pray we get out of this mess.

This is indeed sad , I visited that Mall during my time in Kano years back ,, it's always filled with people especially during festive periods ..

If Shoprite can afford to shut down and leave Kano which is one of the most populous cities in Nigeria,, then it's safe to fear that they will later shut down their shops in other cities one by one .

I always said that Nigeria went backwards 50 years the day Buhari found his way into Aso rock as the President, to make things Worse , we allowed the one that is worst than him enter after him ....

Before ShopRite came to Kano, there are bigger shopping outlets in Kano.

The sole reason ShopRite left Kano is as a result of stiff competitions.
There are too many shopping centres in Kano with lower price range compare to ShopRite.
Kano is not Aba or Enugu or Anambra.
Too many big shopping options in kano

Pls stop fooling yourself. Shoprite has been in Kano for over eight years. Where they not facing competition then?

The truth remains that the purchasing power of the peope is now low coupled with the high exchange rate. Let's stop acting stupid out of tribal, religious or political sentiments.

So, how come ShopRite thrives in Abuja and Lagos? I want to assume the one at Ikeja City Mall is the most successful and profitable store. Are residents in Lagos & Abuja not patronising local markets again? You will want to mention population, but remember, you said people from Niger and Chad enter Kano for shopping. Plus it is Northern Nigeria's most populous state.

There's what I would call "shopping" culture; it's prevalent in Lagos & Abuja that you mentioned but absent in some states.

For instance, Market Square in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State (also known as Ibom Tropicana) may also face the same challenge in some few years to come if nothing drastic is done about the very poor shopping culture there; I know this because I used to run a multi-national retail business there. Most people who visit market square in Uyo come for sight-seeing & to take fancy photos. Outside Christmas, New Year, Easter & a few other public holidays where people troop in to the mall (don't forget that most of them only come to take photos or experience the escalator), any other day, the place has very very poor footfall.

It's the same thing in Kano inspite of their very large population. Now, you may get some things in ShopRite cheaper than what you get in major markets in Abuja (don't know about Lagos as I rarely visit there or even know about their markets), but you see Kano? If ShopRite sells a particular item let's say for N100 in Abuja while Wuse or Utako or even Garki market sells same for let's say again, N85-N90, in Kano markets, that same item or a similar one (different brand) may be selling for N60-N75.

You've major distributors in Kano's markets whose major concern is sales volume/faster turnover than actual profit making; some of them receive goods from the manufacturers to resell at distributorship price (if it normally takes 3 weeks for e.g to sell same goods in other places, they'd rather "crash" the price & sell off completely in a week, collect their "incentives" from the manufacturers, place another order & the cycle continues. It's a unique selling strategy common among some major distributors in Kano markets; this, I believe is a major factor that attracts many traders from neighboring countries to Kano to purchase goods.

That's what I mean. I would love to go into many more instances of Kano's unique markets & their pricing structures but time won't permit me.

Modified: the highlighted on your response? They don't come for shopping in ShopRite, they come for massive bulk purchases from the many large markets in Kano (Singer, Kantin-Kwori, Yankura, Rimi etc).

Regarding the bold, the previous government leased the store to private investors. So Market Square is different from Ibom Tropicana as a whole. Just as ShopRite Ikeja is different from the ICM. At a point, the cinema there thrived on AKSG subsidy as very people patronised it except when major movies such as Wedding Party was released. So, I wonder why Market Square opened there. Maybe he is targeting when the state becomes more populous than when it entered the market. Using Port-harcourt's profits to sustain Uyo sort of. What is your opinion on De Choice Mall?

Obidients are not your issue. The issue here is INEC and compromised govt institutions including police, army and so on.

So you think if Obi had aligned with Atiku as you guys are saying that PDP would have won?

Imagine this result:

APC = 12.5m
PDP = 11.4m (alliance with LP)

How do you prove the authenticity of this result?

This is why electronic transmission of results was introduced as law but INEC disregarded it and reverted to manual (manipulation)

Tinubu simply bought the presidential election and Obi aligning with Atiku wouldn't have changed anything just like it didn't change in 2019.

And it's also surprising that nobody calls G-5 governor for working against their party. At least the rigging Wike did for Tinubu in Rivers is mind boggling. If Atiku had aligned with Obi, how would that have stopped Wike from doing what he did?

Yes! The real Shoprite left nigeria 2 years ago to south africa but sold his share to a Nigeria investor. It's the Nigeria investor that is now pulling out the outlet from Kano because of the unfavourable business environment in the state.

You're most likely right on MSQ using profit from their other locations to sustain their Uyo branch.

You know, ShopRite were the initial anchor tenants in mind for the mall before they pulled out (likely after conducting due diligence & market survey) & MSQ came in; I still struggle to understand the business decision behind their choice of coming to Uyo. While they enjoy sales (profitablity is what I don't know), other business owners inside the mall are seriously struggling.

As per De Choice, I think they've been able to maintain a firm grip on their market share; which still tracks back to my point earlier that most people who visit the mall go there for sight seeing more than shopping. It's also a "status" symbol/showoff kinda thing. Most of them would rather patronize De Choice, INELs or any other indigenously owned business for their basic shopping needs.
