Paying tax on your own without others paying is not going to help your country or do you think it will?. One tree can not make a forest

The young man isn't planning on being the only tree that would make a forest. He is satisfying his conscience and trying to fulfill all righteousness. To each his tent. I wonder why some individuals who commented earlier before you are irked by his personal decision.

Don't worry bro... Do what pays you. But I promise it pays much better to do right—my experience for 13 years. Even if government chooses to do evil, it doesn't make them qualify to be my role model.

And you know taxing is already on some major online platforms—I think they are the ones to make it well-known...

In the end, each one will receive what they deserve: government or civilian...

Kudos OP.
Words on marble 👏👏
It's so refreshing to see someone trying to do what is right, something very foreign to a lot of Nigerians, yet they wonder why the country is the way it is. If everyone builds their own portion of the wall aka the Nehemiah principle, the outcome will be a solid wall that will eventually protect everyone.

God bless you OP.

Hello, please could anyone with experience tell me how to full my duties to the government in terms of tax. I've never done it before.

And would I calculate it in dollars or naira; if dollars, will it be in official rate or parallel market rate.

If you know what's right, please let me know.

Thanks.
Hi, I do understand you, I use upwork and fiverr, and fiverr hasn't implemented a tax system for nigeria yet, (in the mill0

for upwork they've set that up already so if you use upwork check their help center and you'll see how to setup your account to pay tax.

it you get your TIN setup as submit your tax forms to upwork when asked.

also what is called self assessment which is what I mostly use, although I understated my earnings to a million a year and was to be paying 23k a year as tax to my state.

The person has probably lost touch with realities here. That's how they start and create big problems for others. I wonder how much he or she is even making online.

Just go through the guy's thread and you'll see that everything is about religion . It speaks so much about the person. There are level two and top rated sellers on Fiverr here on NL, remote workers earning thousands and nobody is going about asking foolish Tax questions.

They have access to the backend, the reason they are requesting for BVN and NIN by CBN, be careful 😉 because there's no hiding place.

See why Nigeria can never move forward. We want overseas treatment and services but not pay the basic requirements of us. See all of them making noise about not paying taxes and skimming it and even calling someone who's asking to do the right thing names.

What makes you different from all the politicians stealing? Because not paying your due taxes is actually stealing. Later they would come here frosting in the mouth and shouting that the country is bad without considering the little efforts they carry out in their own personal spaces that continues to damage the country. Taxes are a requirement as a citizen. If you are making money in Nigeria even though remotely you are required to pay taxes. Yes the services aren't optimal but roads(no matter how bad and limited), security are funded from taxes.

Can't wait for FIRS to sit up and start requiring mandatory tax return filings yearly. Tie NIN to Taxes. If you don't file taxes , you can't get any services from government, can't register kids in school, can't apply for passports, can't get mobile services etc.

@op. What you need to pay is the PAYE and would go to your state of residence. Reach out to your State LIRS.

Only a fool will commit a crime and flaunt it online. You lot are just lucky Nigeria is the way it is. If Nigeria were to work the way sensible societies should work, a lot would be cooling their heels in a prison ward.

Tax laws aren't as fast as the new developments in the society, doesn't make evasion of clearly defined laws legal. Messi, Aguero and other players getting jail sentences in Spain because of tax evasion knew what they were doing. If we are asking better from Leaders, citizens should also do their best to conform to laws and regulations.

Really sad to see people's response on this matter.
Nigerians want to build castle in the air.
How can we in large numbers vehemently oppose people doing or trying to do the right things, or make the person out to be foolish for trying to do right, and we want a good country?
The people need to be upright if the country is to be upright.

Pls do not be discouraged, follow your heart and be true to yourself.
I must say i am inspired by you and i will also follow suit.

Many have already proffer guide on what you need to do and how to get it done.

The only thing i will like to add is once you calculate what is due (you can use any of the tac calculator already posted), depending on your state Inland revenue services (as most do not have online payment option), get the service account details and the collecting bank, then proceed to pay to the bank (this will eliminate your fear of them cheating you). Afterwards take the teller to the service office, they will issue you an official receipt.

Again thank you for the enlightment and wanting to do the right thing.

Hello sir, I do hope you are having a good day.
I have seen your earlier comments but i saw them as noise thus I do not think they worth dignifying a response.
I am responding because you are on my mention.

First what warrant the bolded just because someone decided to do what is right?
Why not just read and pass sir.

I am not trained to trade insults as I am sure you must be going through something or has been really frustrated with the government for you to vent all that to someone you don't know on a public forum.

My prayers are with you sir. May God or whatever you belief in heal your pains. Thank you

Well, I wasn't comfortable with the way a tax worker was not willing to share details of the portal/remita or something I could use by myself. Quite insisting to help where I wasn't willing to be helped. And I should just bring the cash when it's time.

So I left there leaving their form behind, as January is the actual time. And felt like trying firs online instead. Someone was also saying I would pay for "development fees". So maybe they thought I was there looking for an opportunity to waste money. Cos once you say you do online stuff, it seems to many like it's Yahoo.

I will try again in January, and maybe walk straight to the head office where I registered, and if they're not ready to show me the right link, they can call me when they're ready. Or I'll check Firs online...

Thanks
Re: How Do Freelancers Pay Tax? by anu3: 9:33pm On Dec 16, 2023
For those who are deeply offended, well, no apologies. Apart from my strict religious reasons, you know some major opportunities do go with taxing.

In fact, what led me to getting the number at first was an employer from Spain with relatively juicy offer said I would need one to start working with her. Although, later I realized she wanted to be using me as a bond employee instead of an independent contractor as stated in the contract, so I had to cut it—except she was willing to give the benefits of an employee, like my whole time was bought, kind of...

Then maybe I should start regretting ever stressing myself for the TIN, but then I realized God just used that to help me awake to my responsibilities. Some others too required it but maybe not as strict. I know I lost some because of tech issues, network speed and even passport. To some, it's criminal record and so on. Cos I've never had to travel.

In conclusion, people should try to respect others decisions so long it's none of their business. Thankfully I didn't hint anyone to push the thread, I was only looking for ideas from people with experience.

God bless...

At the bolded, it is actually not their fault as many state IRS do not have functional online portal where someone can do it in a DIY way.

anu3:

As many accountant in the house already pointed out, you will only remit to FIRS if you are paying as a registered company which in any case you still have to calculate what you presume to be the salary you get from the company and remit the accruing tax to the state IRS.
In all you still have to deal with your state revenue service because of the residency rule as someone earlier pointed out.
You can do a search on your state revenue service you may be lucky they have an online portal.

anu3:

Yes Development levy is paid as a one off annual payment, it is about 2k (the last time i paid) for each staff of a company. thus, if it is only you, the dev fee for a year is just 2k (you should confirm from your state revenue service).

Well, I would say maybe it's possible but it's not very easy. Maybe it's possible if you are good at general English and like teaching. I remember trying to help some teachers that contacted me here, but they soon gave up which was okay.

Cos I actually began trying back in 2017. After awhile and so much waste of money and energy, I gave up and later returned when God just somehow linked me up with a foreign school through another Nigerian just last year...
