Lagos was developed and ahead, of most if not all Nigerian cities, before the establishment of Nigeria. Western region is the region of the Yoruba stock which Lagos is one of. You don't like it, you can always jump into the lagoon.

The British and FG developed LAGOS till 1991

So what stopped nembe, brass and Calabar from becoming richer since they were also running a parallel British trade. Some of you just type nonsense all day everyday on Nairaland.

LAGOS was eventually made the headquarters of the British and the capital of Nigeria, that's the difference

The British left in 1960
It was Lord Lugard and the British who founded and built Enugu and Umuahia yet you still claim it as yours

Awolowo ruled more that 95% of Lagos State

Have you ever Heard of Gov Jakande Before?
He and Awolowo far outdid the FG by a huge Margin

It was Babangida who was the President that invested most in Lagos by building the 3rd Mainland Bridge but you must Remember that all Major Bridges in Nigeria are built by the FG including all the ones over River Niger

Babangida only completed the third mainland Bridge, all previous governments invested in Lagos including Obasanjo who built Festac and trade fair

Awolowo reign as Western region premeir was short, when the military governments took over,Lagos was funded from FG ,even during jakande tenure prior to that British government had started developing Lagos as against other regions/ states

All the states in Nigeria were heavily invested in during the military era..I don't know you peoples obsession with Lagos state..

There is nothing they did in Lagos state that they didn't do in Kaduna state..Even the festac and trade fair you mentioned they built in Kaduna state, there are festac buildings and Trade fair in Kaduna state.

Lagos Island was very different to FCT

FCT was a dedicated Federal Capital the people were even moved elsewhere

though I hear FG is yet to Compensate them all

Apapa port was established in 1913 and the construction of 1st 4 deep water berths started in 1921.
Lagos Airport was initially built during 2nd World War.
Carter bridge was built in 1901.
Lagos - Abeokuta railway was opened in 1898, got to Ibadan in 1902.
As far back as 1860s, Lagos already got electricity, telephone, post office, Schools, City Hall, recreation centres, Cathedrals, public & private hospitals, tarred roads, business districts and international trade centres etc.
As you can see, many of the developments in Lagos occurred b4 amalgamation and formationofNigeria. So, Lagos was majorly developed by the locals and colonial masters, using revenues generated from Lagos and other parts of Western Region.

On point

LAGOS had been sold to the British since 1860, it was under the control of the British, the British developed it,LAGOS was chosen as the capital to prevent French encroachment as the eastern Nigerian area( the Calabar area had already been defined as British territory but not the Western area.)

You're a novice. Lagos was already declared British territory as far back as 1962. Calabar became colony of British in 1884

Lagos already had sea ports long before the entity Nigeria was formed. That's the point.

Besides, FG built sea ports in Port Harcourt, Calabar etc.

Local Governments that were former FCT (Km2)
Lagos Island-8.7
Eti-Osa-192
Apapa-27
Lagos Mainland-19
Total-246.7 Km2

Total Lagos state landmass-3577km2

246.7/3577*100=6.9 percent

About 7 percent of Lagos State Landmass was former FCT. Others were part of old Western Region

Under which local government was Festac Town in, way back in 1976?

I asked because building that town was a Federal Government project and my father's block factory operating on a 24hrs production shift rotations by his Ghanian workers, was a key supplier of blocks used in the building of the town.

Don't mind the people arguing blindly, after the British left in 1960 that was when Lagos had significant development, which was created by the FG through the military governments when they took over in 1966

Don't mind them by 1976 the whole of LAGOS was capital under the military governments, they are are talking of Western region that ended in 1966 ,prior to 1966 most of Lagos was an underdeveloped village, it was the military governments that mainly developed LAGOS not even the British, not to talk of the regional government

Below is what the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority released, so if the Warri port was fully functional and it being nearer to Onitsha, with barges ferrying those 65% of containers from Warri port where it landed from different parts of the world to Onitsha, why would any South eastern based business import through Lagos?

They had completely different Budgets and Management
