He has effectively been sentenced to prison for life - he will be held in a prison hospital - because he is not mentally stable enough to understand the full consequences of his actions - hence him admitting that he will commit the crime again if released. A mentally unwell person cannot stand trial.

..it's a common behavior of hackers to own up to their actions because they want to be known for an impressive stunt they pulled......... I mean the guy hacked a secure network,similar to many other networks, with a phone and Amazon stick......what's mentally unstable about that....??

To me... the judgement he got is a slap on the wrist and an obvious move to keep him out of a normal maximum or minimum correctional facility to protect him from abuse and have access to his impressive skills

You didn't see that he has acute autism, or you just don't know that this is a mental illness?? Owning up to what you've done and promising to do it again are very different things. He's being treated with too much gravity. Even murders are considered for parole, why are they so angry at him for a game? It's not like he's threatening national cyber infrastructure . They're be better off repurposing him.

Anyone can reach a level incredible proficiency in any skill when given enough time.

You can be taught a skill, you can't be taught character. There's been stories of hackers even more proficient and prolific in their attacks than this who were eventually repurposed or they turned their life around. Check out the story of Kevin Mitnick, Thommy De Voss and The Xbox Underground.

Anyways, he's just 18. He can still make his life useful. He's lucky his autism is high on the spectrum, he for spend the better part of his useful years in a max security prison instead of that mental hospital he's been committed to.
