Have you heard about EAA before? If the union you belong to don't push for it, that means you guys don't know your right as workers under federal sector. It is your right to receive allowances as federal worker, Some workers in private sector get allowances talkless of federal government. Don't tag lecturers as dull. Imagine house agent calling kettle black. You guys are no saints either. Go read on works done at research institutes from napri to nvri. Vaccines on trypanosomiasis developed in collaboration with researchers at nvri wasn't developed by housing agents collecting agency fee for housing with outdoor kitchen.

There are many local and international research finding agencies from which you could build networks of collaborators, support other graduate research, disseminate your research findings and advertise yourself in high quality journals and international conferences/workshops/symposia and also get some remunerations for yourself.

Just don't limit yourself. Grow yourself through self-development and mentorship from scholars with enviable credentials.

You can do what you enjoy, grow thereby and get yourself decorated through laurels you're able to attract to yourself.

Unfortunately, you didn't know that some lecturers are realtors too. Most of them engage in other businesses that bring more money than salary.

But of course you do not know that.

They may even get scholarships or grants that you won't get as easily as they can. Plus some of them work for INEC and earn money. They sometimes do consultancy. They work as facilitators for FG, world bank etc training, none of which you will qualify for.

Dis grant of a tin, is it dat after securing the grant(which is money or funds), then u use it to write or do ur research. After finishing the research, will u be paid for it? And who is paying u for dis?

Ok. Some guys there who are researchers annoyed me...so I felt you are one of them...but at the same time, you can get more clues from my previous posts.

Anyway, going into academics is a very good decision. The idea is that your salary is the smallest fraction of your income. Trust me...it is. If you know what you are doing, your brain can put money into your pocket till the last second you pass to eternity.

Private businessmen are the ones you are there to serve and not the government. If you get govt's contract...good...but you don't aim for that. Govt will employ you when private businesses give good recommendations about you. Think of it...politicians always roll with businessmen. That's how it works.

Look at your field very well, and get the most recent trend there. Who are the big players in your field? What are they into? Check out recent research the there. From there, you start mapping out a way for you to get done what they need. Remember, it is what they need and not what you think is smart or think they need. Nope. Find out what they need. Find out the problems they encounter seriously and solve them. If you can get an evergreen area, that is a joker. That's a big win. An evergreen area is always relevant, so you keep making money back to back for many years for anything you patent and they use.

But these lecturers here...they just want govt to keep paying them more for teaching old things. How many of them give scholarship to their students? Lol. Most of the scholarships Nigerians and other nationalities get to study abroad are from the lecturers. It is sort of the reward for the students to come on board and assist them with the research they are doing. That free tuition and other fees are from the money awarded to the lecturer. Scholarships just dont fall from heaven. And if you check, the bulk of these funds are from the private sector. Our lecturers are idiots doing nothing. No private organisation is patronizing them cos they are mostly worthless. So the only option they have is to keep blackmailing govt to increase their salaries.

If you want to go into academics, leave Nigeria. It is not worth it. Those lecturers are stumbling blocks.

You could search for them online depending on your field of research and with well-written research proposal.

You could make budget for yourself, research assistants, and other personnel, materials, equipments, services, travels and miscellaneous for the successful completion of the project within the target period.

Grants are of diff forms. Some cover all expenses pertaining to a research. Some part of it. Grant isn't even necessarily money. Could even be access to a laboratory in another country to carry out some analyses. Real elaborate grants even places the researchers on a stipend and cover travel expenses. End result of any grant requires your findings to be published in high quality journals, may even require presentations at conferences. Contrary to what some pple alluded to earlier, you don't propose a study just cos you think it's relevant. [/b]Grant awarding bodies have terms of reference that have to be followed to be even considered.
In more saner climes, staff of a dept are for the most part employed under a running grant. [b]Only a few are tenured. A grant can last for years, allowing the dept to employ staff and admit students that will work under a project. The employed staff will in turn service the dept on a number of roles. Here in Nigeria there's no target set on staff per se. Aside published works and admin duties, you dont need much to make promotion. How many professors today will mk that rank if a grant condition was set? While that would improve the quality of research and qualified hands, it's not actually the fault of academics. The tetfund we are even talking of was borne out of agitations by academic staff. Where are the industries and pharmaceutical companies? They are the backbone of research in foreign countries. Pfizer can sink in billions every year to Harvard or Texas a&m to research cancer. Na orange drugs go fund research here?

Hmmmmm! I don't know, but look at prof. Wole Soyinka very well. He dived into African related stuff because that was the angle he could sell well. Can you beat a British, American or Irish when it comes to their language? I doubt it. Naturally, investors will turn to them. But I think if you look into African culture and can blend it into your area, it is the way to go.

Go online and research what areas Yoruba teachers who are presently awarded special visas to the US are doing there. I think Hausa is demanded too in the US, but not sure about Igbo. It is not by sentiment, go for what these people need. I have given you clues.

You may need to go outside what you like or what you think is good, but do what they want now. Then, look at those universities presently employing yoruba teachers. You can see if there are scholarships you can apply for. Or research stuff you can do. If you cannot get, you may just find any legal means to get to the US, Canada, UK or Australia...and then get your shi.t started there. We are over 300 millions in Naija...so, the bar is so high now. Crush all hindrances by any means.

Just do it!
