A quite interesting analysis on the Nigerian state, call it a post-mortem before the post-mortem. https://twitter.com/PeccaviConsults/status/1739801872167321733?t=--vmTpAbVEfbYFcC3TyDyw&s=19 2 Likes 2 Shares |

If we go by the crowd that often is available for campaigns, Northern population passes eye test. Nigeria's population data might not be as far from the truth as we often think. 2 Likes |

Posterity will be kind to Akeredolu for his role in ensuring Amotekun came on board to checkmate the menace of Fulani herdsmen at a time Buhari and FG decided to play blind and dumb to their atrocities in Yoruba land. 1 Like |

BlueRayDick: Cancer na your mate? There are 1001 cancers that are nasty like that. Despite the billions being poured into cancer research when the wrong type nabs someone, there is no way out. |

BlueRayDick: It is not that straightforward. First of all, there is no single ācauseā for cancer. I use the term cause loosely because in many cases those things donāt cause cancer they only increase your risk of developing it. Letās take cigarette smoking for instance. I once had a patient who had smoked 7 packs of cigarettes daily for 40yrs. It was not lung cancer that killed him as many would expect, but COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). I currently have another patient who smoked 1 pack daily for a few decades as well. She currently has lung cancer that has spread to her liver and brain. The first guy smoked far more but didnāt get cancer. Why? Because it is multifactorial. Family history and genetics plays a major role as well. Breast cancer in many cases has no obvious cause but it runs so strongly in some familyās genes that some women remove their breasts before they develop breast cancer. Using contraceptives might increase risk but I would not say it CAUSES it. For skin cancer it is mainly exposure to sunlight that increases risk but there is also a very strong genetic component. Rarely affects blacks cos of our melanin levels. It is a viral infection that has been linked with cervical cancer. That is one cancer that has been tackled quite well in developed countries. Prostate cancer also has a strong genetic component and no real causes as such but it is more common amongst blacks. Stomach cancer also has a very strong genetic component but smoking, alcohol, and other factors can be involved. Blood cancers are very diverse but most also have a strong genetic component, but there is sometimes also a link to smoking and radiation etc As you can see there is not a single cause, and there hundreds of types of these cancers. Overall most cancers have a genetic component which we canāt do much about in most cases. Then there are several other factors which vary depending on the type or cancer. If there is one thing one can do to reduce overall cancer risk though, it would be to stop smoking. I have not had many cancer patients who never smoked. 14 Likes 4 Shares |

GrammarNazi1: There are different types of leukaemia generally, and even within each type there are subtypes which determine how aggressive the cancer is. In some cases the genetic risk is so strong that even if the patient keeps beating the cancer with the help of treatment, it will keep coming back like a zombie until it gets him/her. There is a reason cancer is the most feared diagnosis in the developed world. In many cases your money canāt save you. 3 Likes |

Theflint1: That may be more about idle hands and poverty though. In a state where there is gainful employment and business how many people will you be able to mobilize for rallies where people will get 1k attendance fee (not guaranteed) Then again - the norths obsession with polygamy and multiplying may really be a long term political strategy that they have conveniently tied to religion. Like the conservatives quiverful movements Large numbers of pauperised and uneducated voters are essential for state capture. 1 Like |

I was going to ask if Leukamia wasn't treatable cos I remember Carl Ikeme had it and survived after Chemo and all.....But I guess u already answered my question with the talks about Genetics & some of these things being multifactorial. |

afrodoc2: This is another third world problem as we are exposed to all sorts of carcinogens without even knowing I read that ndlea was busting people in high brow neighborhoods whose houses were meth labs. So everyone in the estate has been exposed without knowing What youtube diy videos and you will see people wearing gloves for tasks we consider mundane. Apparently used engine oil is dangerous to handle, as an example. Then you have unsafe products that westerners have discarded that are brought here to sell as goods There is going to be a skin cancer epidemic. I don't know what it will take for nafdac to go after all the 'caro white' creams being sold. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by afrodoc2: 11:26am On Dec 27, 2023 |
GloriousGbola: Hmmm that skin cancer thing would be unfortunate. That is one thing our dark skin has helped us with and some of us want to concede own goal with those useless creams. One thing people need to start doing in Nigeria is to go for regular checks. There are things that can be nipped in the bud if addressed early enough. I would say the cut-off should be around 30yrs of age for Nigeria. Once you hit that age you should see your doctor once a year for a check and carry out relevant tests. 1 Like |

afrodoc2: There are some important things about our health we are oblivious about in this Nigeria. I think it was in 2022 a doctor told me that once an adult male crosses the 40-age mark, his chances of having prostate cancer is high and as such every man is advised to regularly check their PSA level to detect prostate cancer early so that it can be well managed before it degenerates. There are so many people both educated and uneducated who don't even know this. |
