You people must show your complex sha.

You egusi is a yoruba soup that you igbos pride yourself on. Melon aka egusi does not even grow in the east

Nobody will say their mama soup no dey sweet.

Anyways, you are wrong to say Egwusi does not grow in the east....very wrong oga.

As per egwusi which everyone knows Nigeria for with ugu leaves....that's the classic Igbo egwusi sold by Anambra women who run restaurants across Nigeria. Yoruba don't cook egwusi the same way and most restaurants are owned by Igbo women of mostly Anambra extraction.

Oha soup and Ofe Onugbu (bitter leaf soup) remains my best soup.
To be my best soup means to be cooked with Ede (cocoyam), and not all those oats, custard or whatever that people use to thicken it.

2. Interesting to note is that I enjoyed Efo when I lived for some years in the Surulere National Stadium before shops were demolished.
Omo, once I tasted that Efo, I never looked back. I guess the woman was good. Because I recall tasting it somewhere else years later and it didn't re-enact memories for me.

3. Interesting to note again is that back in school, my bunk mate from a town called Ede, who was staying on top of me, though he was young and was in 100L, was a big fan of Gbegiri. What I wondered was that I was in 400L (and far older) and had never cooked a soup in my life, and a 100L boy was cooking this soup at expert level. It dawned on me that I learnt nothing coming from home, lol. Many years later, I still neva cook one single soup.

4. On a visit to Ughelli, after decades of hearing about Banga up and down, I later got to taste the soup. What got me confused was why this Banga soup (it was so premium to the people) was much more expensive than other soups despite not being particularly special in taste to me. It would turn out that the Banga soup was the same soup we called Ofe Akwu (Palm fruit soup) in the East. Except while we ate ours with Rice, they ate theirs with Eba (and theirs didn't have the luxury of vegetables as ours).

5. Living in the north east in those days, I tasted this special northern premium soup called Mia Kwuka. I didn't eat it enough times to remember what it tastes like, unfortunately.

Pic. 2 Efo riro soup
Efo riro is a generic name for different types of soups. There are more than ten different types of efo riro soups.

Also, the Yorubas have more than 20 different types of very rich and tasty regional soups from the Eastern parts of Yorubaland [Okun, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, etc] to the Westernmost parts of Yorubaland in Benin Republic/Togo.

Op, where is ewudu soup?

Funny enough, Yoruba does not really have soup. This is what makes Nigeria a special country. The SE and SS have variety of soups, but we don't have except ewedu, gbegiri... However, there are some soups that are unique soups that are special to some villages, but they're not known in the city.

Truth be told, the SS and SE cook egusi better than us. They make them in varieties over there. However, Yoruba too are also trying their best with few different version.

Anytime we kill goat in the village it's always oha season my grandma will prepare it with cold hardrock fufu, ha i missed village food.
I still had it after i traveled to the village last year.
Please flush that efo riro down the toilet thank you.

We’re talking about good soups. Efo riro is just-about passable here. But where oha and afang are being mentioned, there is no place for typical ewedu. None whatsoever.

For me, Egusi without the presence and Naija taste of Bitter leaf is adulterated.

That taste is everything. cool

Lots of pumpkin leaves work too.

Onugbu-egusi is an Anambra thing specifically (by extension maybe Enugu). That’s not how other Nigerians cook their egusi. They lack such extensive familiarity with onugbu. You can try getting it in Ngor-Okpala or Owere if you will but Imo state Igbos as a rule barely know what to do with onugbu.
