Why Do Some Nigerians Love Wasting Water? by jmoore(op): 8:37am On Oct 02, 2023
1: Pumping water: Many will switch on the water pump and the tank will overflow for 2-3 hours or more before they switch it off.
If they were using generator to pump the water, they will off it immediately a drop of water overflow. You can't try such on prepaid metre or your units will keep running out faster. Being on estimated billing gives them the morale to waste water.

2. Using water: Years ago, a landlord within the neighborhood came to meet my Dad. He complained that his soakaway is always filled. My Dad asked him if he connected water to all tenants and he said yes. My Dad advised him to disconnect all pipes to tenants apartment. Let all of them go down within the compound to fetch water.
That was how the problem was solved.
The tenants can no longer waste water because they saw how much effort they put it to carry 25-30 litres up to 3 storey building.

I still know many buildings that keep pumping water out of their soakaway because they connected water directly to all tenant's flats. These tenants feel that because they paid a certain amount as house rent, they have the right to waste water.

lol obviously...

@ op, the thing with human is, when it is readily gotten and easily available, we tend to take it for granted, this is what lead to wastage... in a rural place whereby, getting water is like finding a lost pin in an ocean, you won't find this kind of behaviour... that's just human for you... until a restrictive practice is put in place like the example you gave, it will continue...

Mtchewwww...so somebody can not use water again because he is in a rented apartment?

Is the pumping machine or water from the borehole complaining? Or people should not flush again...

Water is a free natural resources , let people use it as they like and stop rationing it for them

Some Neighbours have an habit of leaving the water pump on for hours without checking to see if water is still being pumped especially during the dry season.
For me, As long as Each neighbour has their own Water Tank and Septic Tank, they can leave water running in their apartments for all i care.
May we not have useless neighbours.

I don't think pumping machine consumes units in prepaid meter. I stand to be corrected.
Pumping water in the compound I live is a rocket science. To pump is problem, to put it off another wahala. Wasting water, that one weak pesin. Landlady don talk tire

God forbid me to live in a rented apartment and be paying money as rent for a natural resource.

I can't pay for natural resource

I'll simply gather money purchase a car or van I can be sleeping in till I buy land .

I can't buy water , I'll put water in water bottle for me to be drinking and I'll locate a nearby water spot like a stream to.be fetching water and filter for use.

E sweet for your mouth to talk na.....until you build house finish come put tenants inside. Dem come call you 3 months after you rented the house out that the soakaway is full. Na dat time your head go straight. The OP is not saying not to use water. But to be moderate in the usage so as to avoid waste. If it were to be in Europe, you dare not waste water, light or gas cos by the time you use 60 percent of your income take pay for these wasted amenities, you no go need pesin to tell you to be moderate grin

ehn. .. that suck away part is still understandable but shutting out water from their apartment is what I don't support.

The landlord is cr.azy. Your dad gave a very terrible advice. Don't say this elsewhere, please.

Your dad could not ask him the size of his so called soakaway for a 3 storey? The only advice he could give was to disconnect water like his tenants were prisoners??

It is obvious the cra.zy landlord constructed a tiny soakaway for his 3 storey barrack with 50 "sef-con."

If it is obvious, why didn't the soakaway get filled after all the tenants were disconnected from the water supply?

It is common sense. Do you use your generator/fuel the same way you apply the regular electricity? The fact that most people would not power their ACs, water heater, or freezers with a 2kva generator do not mean that they waste electricity when they power same appliances with the regular electricity.

Scarcity makes you cut down on things that matter. People who typically have to take their bath whenever they return from work at night would have to go to bed dirty without bath because of the wicked landlord.

The landlord should get a plumber to refurbish his apartment. By the way, "soakaways" now belong to the 20th century. New generation builders have abandoned that concept. The new generation "soakaways" do not get filled up because people waste water. It is impossible.

Your analogy doesn't fit. People on estimated billing waste electricity, those on prepaid will switch off lights in the morning. It has nothing to do with scarcity. Tenant that decides to sleep with a dirty body is lazy.

I'm on prepaid billing. I don't switch off my light. I'm spending my money. You can't complain on my behalf.

By the way, people on estimated billing pay more on electricity (you can argue but facts remain facts). Hence, they deserve to do whatever they want with their light. They are the only group of Nigerians paying for what they don't use. If you don't like the fact that they "waste" electricity, then go and get them metres. That's what sane people do, not switch off light or water because people "waste" it.

My analogy is about majority. Do a survey, you belong to the minority.
You don't use a minority experience as a case study. Most on prepaid turn off many things.
It is the government that should provide water. A landlord will protect his property if the facility is at risk because of carelessness of tenants. If they think they are prisoners, let them find another house.

Okay. Great. The reason you don't enjoy 24/7 light in your apartment is because majority of Nigerians waste electricity, yeah??

If Nigeria has 60,000 megawatts on the grid 24/7 and all customers are on prepaid, most customers will manage how they consume power. They will prefer to use gas to cook and not electric stove. They will discard 100 watts bulb and fix 6 watts, 10 watts. If the landlord starts a seperate water billing according to the liters of water each flat consumes, I am pretty sure most won't spend 40 minutes under a running shower.

In somewhere like Lagos mainland where a 3 bedroom flat goes for 1 million naira and above a is where u want to disconnect water pipe.....na because u never see tenants wey go show u shege.

The more u pay for house rent......the more amenities u should av at disposal..... that doesn't mean u should waste these things.

If? Well, "if" the landlord has a modern soakaway that never gets filled up with water, this thread would never have existed.
Re: Why Do Some Nigerians Love Wasting Water? by DamienMartin:
In some areas, inadequate water infrastructure or inconsistent water supply can result in a lack of awareness about the importance of water conservation. When water is perceived as readily available, there may be less urgency to conserve it. You can read my informative article about it from https://stovewise.com/.

Some places don't have good water systems or regular water, so people might not know how important it is to save water. If water seems easy to get, people might not think it's necessary to save it. You can check out my article to learn more at https://cookwarely.com/.

This story definitely happened in the SE.
Their landlords see basic things like borehole as luxury. It was a culture shock for me to hear "The house has borehole". I was like wtf? Isn't it supposed to have water??!

As a kid in remote mainland, our house had water in the 90s. Why is anyone marketing a house with running water as luxury in 2020?

Drilling borehole is expensive in the SE. Pre 2013, you could easily use a house with borehole as landmark and it would be just one house on a whole street. I know because na my place be that. They can't try this nonsense with Lagos tenants.
