The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in Abuja, led by Dr. Abdulateef Bello, has announced significant developments aimed at reorganizing the city’s transportation system. Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting, Dr. Bello disclosed plans to commence the recovery of taxi ranks that were previously issued quit notices within the capital city.

The objective is to reorganize the ranks for licensed operators, part of a broader effort to standardize the transportation system in Abuja. Dr. Bello emphasized the necessity of standardizing the transportation system in the fast-evolving city, highlighting the administration’s commitment to meeting the needs of all citizens. He further revealed that Abuja is set to welcome buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), offering a sustainable solution for mass transit in the city. The introduction of CNG-powered buses is poised to address the challenges posed by rickety vehicles and taxis, which have been a source of nuisance on Abuja’s roads.

Dr. Abubakar Sadiq, Chairman of RTEIN Mass Transit, welcomed the new policy while urging the administration to ensure that critical players in the transportation sector receive adequate consideration. Okorie Victor, Chairman of the Self Employed Commercial Drivers Association (SECDAN), echoed the importance of aggressive sensitization efforts to ensure that all stakeholders fully comprehend the evolving transportation policies.

These developments will signify a pivotal moment in Abuja’s transportation landscape, reflecting a concerted effort to enhance efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. As the city’s infrastructure continues to evolve, the proactive measures taken by the DRTS herald a new era of organized and sustainable transportation for the capital.

Enough of all these promises and plans that never really connect with most people. We want to see real action and progress, not just more empty assurances that don't make a difference.

"We will, we will" everytime but at the end of the day it's still the same outcome.

Can they maintain them.
There are over 400 mass transit buses abandoned to rot in Katampe area of Abuja for many years. These are buses bought with billions rusting away with batteries, tires and Kickstarter stolen by Buhari brothers aka iron condemn

Watin we never see before the big question is sustainability. The transport sector is so complex that expertise is need for it’s smooth operation bureaucracy will only equal more failure like pass administration have recorded.

Anybody who wants to do taxi business should go and register with government but not only with taxi union. They shouldn’t be paying only Busstop or garage fees and be calling themselves taxi operators we want proper registration in a well maintained database.

We don’t want to know whether or not you are using it for side hustle. Get registered.

Also they need designated number plates to easily identify any oncoming vehicle as a taxi.

The red paint on number plates they use in identifying commercial vehicles in Nigeria is not enough.

There should be dedicated number series for taxis and other commercial vehicles.

In Austria, for example, all their taxi plates end with -TX. You can also check the taxi driver’s info and his passport.

If Wike can maintain adequate database of these taxis, easily passengers can quickly check on that portal to be sure a taxi is truly an authentic taxi.

The earlier we take our security serious, the better and quicker we will have rest of mind after which foreign investors can start coming.

Let our governors, who are there just stea1ing, do similar, responsive, database for all commercial vehicles in their states.

We can then have a harmonized (one common) database for all our vehicles in Nigeria.

This shouldn’t cost more. It should be affordable for them to pay. They should link every driver’s NIN details and BVN although these would be hidden for (from) passengers to see.

I am certain they won’t want to register because they will be afraid of paying tax. That’s going to be their insinuation.

I don’t know what our transport ministers do in 8 years.
This is not rocket science. FRSC can help with database.
Nigerian vehicle owners should go and update their details with FRSC and licensing offices.

Those that require getting new number plates I suggested should go and get. It has to be an enhanced number plate.
No vehicle should be allowed to use plastic number plate. Whoever makes use of plastic number plate should be charged with criminal offense, which could attract longer years in jail or hefty fines in tens of thousands.

At least, every average Nigerian now has an average phone that can access internet.

Those that don’t have phone can be helped out to check authenticity of our vehicles on our roads.

With our level of IT usage in banking, Nigeria tied with Turkey as the most countries in the world, when it comes to mobile banking usage

Why can’t we use this to our advantage.

It's an embarrassment that a City like Abuja, a federal capital does not have a working public transport system.

Even this so called reorganization is all about collecting licensing fees from taxi drivers.
