How do you know what year the photo was taken? There was no time in history that our minimum wage was about $30 as it is now. So if anything, it was by far more affordable back in the days than it is now going by minimum wage because flights are priced in dollar.

Do you know that minimum wage used to be almost $300, $200, then $100 until less than $30 that we have now?
its not about conversion to dollar or whatever sir..

It's about how many months do u have to work to save up for the flight fee..then and now

People were contented with the little they had and basically lived within their means

Unlike today,7 crates of coca cola products was enough for young working couple to organise their marriage ceremony. But this fare was in the 90s

@ tonicyril, Shagari increased the minimum wage to 120 naira

That's a Big lies, was there internet then? Was there G-wagon ?was there bonestraight hair then ?

Go and ask what it cost those who got married in 70s and mid 80s. Majority car owners drove mint cars not tokunbo

No internet but we make do with international magazines that kept us abreast of international events

This your analysis no too clear. Let's keep it simple. Both our minimum wage and air fares are in Naira.

In 1985 when minimum wage was 125 Naira, you needed to earn it 139 times to afford the Lagos to New York ticket then.

Now with min wage of 30k and average lag to NY ticket of 2 to 2.5 million Naira, you will need to earn 66 to 81 times the current min wage to afford the ticket.

Seems like it was way more expensive back then.

Don't mind them, the quest to paint the country bad has blindfolded some people, sometimes the don't know when they walk naked into a market because they are so carried away by there hatred for the country such that they can't do simple calculations before posting in social media

In what year was this?
It was still very expensive in my opinion.

I dare say it is easier to be rich (or at least well off) now than before, because the opportunities that are available now were not in those days.

Name few of those opportunities maybe we can learn from it.

@mariahAngel,
Indeed, nicely put.

Folks who are creative thinkers should look for problems in the larger society and then monetize the solutions to a large, targeted audience. No need to reinvent the wheel... Just do it!

Yours is way simpler, I agree. I guess I did too much by also considering inflation. The naira had more value then, going for N125 to £65. I also made the error of computing with less than 2 million.

this is what people like you always do....you dont even bother to check facts....

una endless hatred for nigeria is tueh....

anyways you can still migrate to other nations....
we dont want to even know what people like you have to say....

are you guys not worried that although naira had nearly equal value you had to still pay that much for ticket....

question is were british people payin the same amount to get to nigeria too....

was tickets that expensive worldwide back then....

this are questions you should be askin yourselves....

I used to travel to London Heathrow in the early 80s with about N200 (two hundred naira something). I can't remember the actual amount, but it was not up to N300 (three hundred naira) for a return ticket with Nigeria Airways.

The minimum wage was 125 in 1981. Airfare to London, economy class by British Caledonian/British airways/Nigeria airways roved around 879 naira. It was much easier or affordable to travel as there were different packages for adults/students and children. So you only needed approximately 6 times your salary to purchase your air ticket.

And by the way, that minimum wage had value, unlike what you find today. You could with just one naira, get a loaf of bread/eggs/ororo/cubed sugar/canned milk/tea bag, with change for your breakfast. You could enjoy your favourite cow tail pepper soup for one naira and your Gulder/star beer for 90 kobo. Life was far better.

IBB/Buhari and their group brought this country to its knees systematically from Dec 31 1983, till May 29, 1999.

As a student you could up to 1984.
Buhari and his group ruined it all. Visa was issued on arrival in London. IBB ruined it as visa before departure commenced in 1986.

guys, naira is loosin value true....but to think its the worst is wrong....

their are still currencies around much weaker than the naira today....

I travelled with student's ticket with Nigeria Airways to London Heathrow for one hundred and something naira in the 80s for a return ticket. There was no need for an entry visa to visit the UK. Visa was issued at the airport on arrival. All that was required was to show the immigration authorities that you have some money for shopping. Usually £200 was sufficient. £200 was equal to N200 by then. See where we are today.

If 1 Naira was equal to 1 dollars then, that means the present ticket rate is cheaper.

I disagree with you dear. That fair wasn't in the 90's. The picture taken looks exactly what happend in the mid 70's. The luggage attendants were putting on Shorts like the Police of that era.
Life wasn't easy the way some people do say it as if those days was really "good old days"
Food was scarce and money was extremely difficult to get. There were few opportunities and multidimensional poverty was all across the land. I speak from experience of that time because I was there. No one should ever wish to go back to those days because it wasn't so pleasant at all. Today we can be what we want to be, drive the car you want drive, wear the most expensive cloths and eat well..it wasn't so many years back.
Today is better. Thanks to Globalisation and Technological advancement.

Those two pictures are not related. Where do you see government officials wearing shorts in the 70s? Check 1974 Gowon hosting of Ahidjo or any other foreign dignitaries on youtube and see if there is any policeman on shorts

I don't know your personal experience, but what part of Nigeria were you living in the mid 70s to have experienced hunger. We are talking of petrol dollar Nigeria or is it another one. Is it Nigeria with food roster for those living in the city, that you go a week without eating same food twice.

We were average,I still remember how we sliced bread from night till dawn in preparation for my sister's birthday in '76. And had to throw it away with sardines sauce spread on it when we heard of deaths caused by sardines consumption. It was not verified, but cartons of unopened sardines had to go too.
