Ministers from Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republic plan to proceed with the establishment of a confederation, the Malian foreign ministry said on Thursday.

This was as the three countries deepened ties via an alliance that threatened broader West African integration.

The latest meeting comes just weeks after the neighbours in the impoverished Sahel region announced in January 2024 their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African states- a decision the bloc has urged them to rethink, warning of the additional hardships this withdrawal would bring.

All three were founding members of the regional bloc in 1975 but had been suspended following military coups that overthrew elected civilian governments.

The procedures will “allow our alliance and the confederation to function efficiently and to the great joy” of the three countries’ populations, his Niger counterpart General Salifou Modi said.

Last November, their finance ministers said they would weigh the option of setting up a monetary union and top officials from all three countries have, to varying degrees, voiced support for abandoning West Africa’s CFA franc common currency.

The juntas have all severed long-standing military ties with former colonial ruler France, dealing a blow to France’s influence in the Sahel and complicating international efforts to fight the militants linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.

I knew this would eventually happen, this is the result of ECOWAS failure to remove them

But I wonder how these landlocked countries will survive on their own without the rest of the regional block, some of them still depend heavily on their neighbors for so many things

004gist:

Removed them how? Will it improve the Nigerian economy.

We should face how to ensure the safety of farmers in Nigeria else
By helping your neighbor, you are also helping yourself.

A stable Niger republic and ECOWAS will definitely benefit Nigeria

And they will still have to use ECOWAS ports, fly through Ecowas countries, depend on ecowas for every aspect of their economy including electricity and education.

Must be nice to live in such grand delusion

You mean a Niger republic that will gives France cheap free raw materials like uranium to power all their electricity plant while Niger remains without electricity

They warned Nigeria last week not to fly non commercial aircraft over their country. I thought Emilokan propaganda machine would have used their stale and now weak line of blaming igbos for the woe but surprisingly he kept quiet…imagine ordinary Niger now warning Nigeria. They also stopped using Nigerian ports and have now signed agreement with Benin to use their port…smh

The only thing working for them is their readiness and willingness to fight. Other boys scouts aka military of other ECOWAS nations are scared to confront anyone with guns.

Give them 10 years together in that confederation- our useless lazy youths of today who are busy snatching ballot boxes for politicians and trolling online for crazy reasons - who can not summon up courage to liberate Nigeria but will rather japa anywhere with their cowardly behinds —-will be praying and fasting to be able to go to this new confederation to be enslaved, abused and humiliated just to have a morsel of bread to eat

These guys are just grand-standing. Poverty -stricken sahel republics, that depends on aids for their national budgets. These rulers would plunge their countries and people deeper into Poverty. International relations doesn't work that way. They are entirely dependent on ECOWAS member States for electricity, importation and support and are still playing strongmen. Nobody should come and rant nonsense here and blame Tinubu.

They don't have problems being landlocked, Morocco and Algeria have already reach out to open their ports for their import and export.
In all of this, the lose is on Ecowas. Benin and Togo will lose more on this.
