Chai..

Oppositions role in engineering their party followers to constantly abuse and smear the image of those in power (using social media) is the cause of the global dent on Nigeria's image.

While they're fighting and insulting their rivals in power, little they know that they're actually destroying the status and reputation of Nigeria as a country globally.

If you're a Nigerian, and you're fond of saying evil of this country every now and then, you're actually doing more damage to yourself than to that Nigeria you hate so much.

No sane man says evil of his country of origin when dealing with outsiders. But I have read countless of such posts & comments on this forum in particular. Most of these things can discourage foreigners from having any dealings with Nigeria or Nigerianns.

On several foreign forums, you will see several hundred comments from people from around the world on a topic that is totally unconnected with national governments, a Nigerian will pop up and comments so negatively about his country, you just shake your head.

Countries like Pakistan, Lebanon, Argentina and several others are in worse economic and political situation than Nigeria, but commenters from those countries do not denigrate their countries such crass way as many Nigerians do on foreign sites.

Even as expensive as things have become recently, many things including petrol, cement, food etc are still cheaper in Nigeria than in many of our smaller neighbouring countries.

You talk your country down and even curse the country on foreign sites, and you expect Nigeria or Nigerians to be respected abroad.

The ability to criticise a government is an absolute necessity in any democracy. But is constant abuse, name calling, and cursing the best approach. I don't think so.

As much as I hate "tarnishing the nigerian image", the people doing so online have every right to do so. The bulk of the population with access to internet voted certain candidate(s). Their candidate not winning, means one thing; they play the role of the opposition. Mentioning countries like Argentina and Co., they wont complain cause they voted in their leaders not like Nigeria with all electoral malpractices known to man. If he really was people's choice, he wouldn't be dragged at every slight opportunity. Jonathan was dragged, but not as bad as MB and BAT who are successfully pushing us back to stone age

The British amalgamated a bunch of people who have no business being together for their selfish gains. They mixed water and oil in the name of a country.

Today, everyone is feeling the heat and those who ask that the British experiment be dissolved are charged with treasonable felony.

Toxicity will never depart Nigeria if the country's economic lot doesn't get better. You cannot beat a child and expect him to keep quiet.

I am happy that a foreigner is saying this. The way Nigerians run down their country is pathetic.

Even the millions of Ghanaians and South Africans who have never been to Nigeria call Nigeria a generator republic. It is Nigerians that wash their dirty linens in public. Unfortunately, some of those foreigners Nigerians ridicule their country in front go away with a worse impression of Nigeria. Some of them even think we don't have electricity at all. A Ghanaian friend of mine was surprised to know that Nigeria generates three times more electricity than Ghana generates and uses two times what Ghana uses.

Nigerians need to be careful how they portray Nigeria outside. For more than 20 years, many middle-class Nigerians ran down the university system in Nigeria as extremely terrible. Yet today many Nigerian graduates are getting recruited in Canada, UK and the likes, even without foreign certificates. Nigerian graduates are still getting admissions to Harvard and other ivy league schools. I live in the US, and I am always happy to see Nigerians who graduated from Unilag, UNN etc, graduating from top PhD programs in the US and getting in to top American companies.

We can disagree with the government of the day and politicians, and be dissatisfied with other things in Nigeria. However, we should be careful about how we project the country outside. Many Nigerians are too negative about Nigeria.

Apt.

"Tinubu is a druggie", "He forged his certificate", "He has nothing to offer", "He stole our mandate", "Nigeria will never progress under Tinubu".

Well, it has now taken an outsider to point out how you demarket yourselves. Nigeria has not been so demonized by election losers the way the country was demonized between 2022 and now. This demonization was further amplified by those who could not accept they were defeated in an election they were never prepared to win.

Many of them do not love Nigeria, they are just pained they are not in charge.

Nigeria is well known all-over the world. Few days ago, I was at an embassy and the woman's eyes lit up when sje saw my Nigerian passport. 12 years ago, I was in another country to write the GRE, and the lady in charge of the place was so proud to have met another Nigerian. She said she was married to a Nigerian, and despite their divorce, she still had respect for him.

As for those demarketing their country, it is yourself you demarket.

Even the Consul of the US Embassy had to tell Rufai Oseni that they as an embassy only look out for the positive aspects of their host countries as a subtle reprimand of his overt negativity. Chimamanda Adiche rejected national honours from Nigeria and had the guts to want to force a candidate on Nigerians because she trusted him being her townsman. When her candidate was roundly defeated, she wrote letters to Rishi Sunak and Joe Biden to demarket Nigeria. She did not believe in the country, but wanted to force a candidate on the country. When she failed, she started throwing tantrums.

How did that work out?

Speak highly of your country. Anywhere you find yourself, be proud of Nigeria.

I have been to 4 continents. The most hospitable and friendliest people in the world are Nigerians! Ask anywhere.
