The Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, on Sunday, commended people of the South-East for their calmness in abstaining from the series of protests against President Bola Tinubu over the economic hardship across the country.

He said the South East has always suffered government neglect since the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He urged Tinubu to implement the recommendations of the 2014 Constitutional Conference amid the hardship confronting Nigeria.

These were contained in a statement made available to journalists by Isiguzoro.

He said, “In the wake of nationwide uproar and agitation sparked by escalating living costs, economic distress, and famine, a resolute calmness emanates from the Old Eastern Nigeria, comprising the South-East and South-South region.

“The striking serenity and resolute silence amidst the prevalent anger and upheaval in the North and Southwest have left many, including the Presidency and the North, astounded.

“The preeminent Igbo socio-cultural organisation and unwavering advocate for the Igbo people commend the citizens of the Old Eastern region, particularly the South-East, for their exceptional acumen and sagacity in abstaining from spearheading protests against President Tinubu and the Federal Government amid economic hardships.

“Since the inception of the Buhari regime in 2015 to the current Tinubu administration, the South-East has borne the brunt of governmental neglect and discrimination.

the wanton demolition of Igbo properties in Lagos without federal intervention, the systematic burning of Igbo markets in the South-West, minimal federal ministerial appointments, or the unjust incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu juxtaposed with the favoured treatment of figures like Sowore and Igboho, the injustices meted out to the Sout-East are glaring.

“As protests surge in Niger, Kano, Lagos, Osun, and Abuja, the absence of casualties or protester killings resulting from security intervention starkly contrasts with the haunting memories of Southeastern lives lost during past protests against Kanu’s detainment and the tragic Obigbo (Oyibo) massacre in Rivers State.

“Ohanaeze stands in awe of the Southeast populace for their undaunted bravery and rare insight in weathering the storm. We stand in solidarity with all suffering Igbo and Nigerians, urging the Federal Government to overhaul President Tinubu’s floundering economic team with competent hands to salvage the crumbling economy before it collapses completely.

“Moreover, instead of issuing hollow threats to disillusioned citizens, the government should heed the voices of reason and implement the recommendations of the 2014 Constitutional Conference to quell the mounting dissent and rebellion.”

The PUNCH earlier reported that youths and women took to the streets in Niger State to protest what they described as the biting hardship and the rising cost of living in the country.

The protest started when a group of women blocked the Minna-Bida Road at the popular Kpakungu Roundabout to lament what they termed the sufferings under the Bola Tinubu government.

They were later joined by men and youths who barricaded the road and halted vehicular traffic.

The economic situation in the country had become unbearable following the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Tinubu on May 29, 2023.

There is nothing like economy hardship, it's we people that need to live up to standards.

Tinubu won't borrow money from IMF to feed anybody ass or to run government.

He would generate the money to build our requiref infrastructure internally.

Even tho, I'm very sure Tinubu will increase the minimum wage soon because there are already some negotiations about it.

Yorubas should protest. Some of them voted because of tribalism. Now, the same people who foisted their lord on all of us are the same people shouting "ebin pa wa". When they sold their votes for bread and oil, they didn't know that they were eating tomorrow's food today abi. Rubbish. Leave the Igbos out of your mess and clean it up.

Before you quote me, I'm a Yoruba man.

I was ashamed of Sanwo Olu during this election period. APC thugs were beating and harassing Igbos to vote for APC. They wounded some of my Igbo friends, beat some, stopped many from voting. Actions always have consequences. Now, the country is in disarray and you're calling on the Igbos that you refused the right to vote. Ai sinle ologbo, ile di'le ekute.

Modified: Some people have started calling me ipob, just because I said the truth. Please, didn't many Yorubas in Lagos, Osun and Ibadan vote APC because "Omo wa ni"? They've called me "Omo ale" just because I chose not to vote for evil. They've called me ipob, not understanding that my lineage is deeply Yoruba to the past 200 years. Okan yin o ni bale.

Isiguzoro should go and sit down. This statement is not needed. And, he hasn't communicated why Igbos are silent correctly. As an Igbo, I don't believe that Ọhaneze represents my interest.

This is becoming nauseating.
Which protests are the Igbo people shouting up and down about? They litter everywhere with videos of normal people complaining and then claim they won’t protest. Just enjoy your so called billions and leave other tribes alone . This incessant attack on other tribes will keep them permanently at a distance from you. Even if you want your own country, you still need others to agree or you need to fight them in a war. Either way, you need them.

By the way, igbos have never fought for good governance. Only Yorubas have always done that. The most outspoken critic of Obasanjo were Yoruba people. The most outspoken people against ABACHA were Yoruba people. Yorubas championed NADECO. It has nothing to do with who is in governance, Yorubas always protest for good governance.

Stay at home on mondays and leave other tribe alone please. You are the one crying all over the internet and yet you claim you wont protest. Learn how to live with people.

Guy your tribe might be known to advocate for good governance then but not now the support for Buhari and Tinubu shows clearly you're in the wrong track, with all the insult most of you reign on GEJ he is far better than your sai baba and your emi lokan.[/quote]

Just listen to yourself. Yoruba always fought for good governance but now that they supported Buhari and protested during GEJ then they are bad. Did you protest the bad governance during Buhari era? Which protest did south east hold during Buhari era that they are saying they won’t protest now? When have you ever protested for good governance if not because your tribesman now contested the last time?

South East, South South warned them that he was incompetent same way they warn them about Buhari, but they called us names. We even told them that Yemi would even be more better so it won't be as if we are tribalistic. but they still refuse forgetting that what a man sees while sitting, even if a child climb up mountain he will not be able to see it
