I'd rather become an apprentice. Most times when i look at some private school teachers, I'm forced to advice them to quit and find something worthwhile. These schools make a lot of money and still pay peanut to their staff.

There's a school within my community with over 200 students from nursery - secondary yet , their staff are always complaining of poor salary and most times when it's been paid is usually the 2nd week of the following month.

Nonsense. You were marching for nothing and expect others to do thesame. Is it by marching that china, Singapore, UAE built their country?

Those interested in private school teaching can establish a union to protect themselves. No teacher should collect anything less than #80,000 in this economy. Any proprietor that fails to pay that value should teach his/her pupils/students themselves.

End modern day slavery!!!

How much more now when a dollar is approaching 2000 naira?

When Elrufai recruited about 20k teachers some years back, many private school teachers ported. The pay then was about 33k which was far better than the average 10-15k they were receiving in private schools.

I will never advice my worst enemy to work in a school except the ones that pay well on the island (Green springs, Corona, etc). For the mainland, Oakwood, Pampers, Grace high school, ECT. Why should anyone be earning 30k in this country while the children in nursery school pay almost 200k as school fees. If you want to waste your youth, then work in a school. I worked in a school for 6 months and resigned. I refused to waste my youth and not even gain any experience. I stayed at home for almost a year before I got a job that put me on a career path.

It is better to sell tomatoes in front of your house than to work in a low paying private school. Some people think it gives mothers time for their children, that is a big lie. Private schools don't release their teachers until 4pm. You go to work from 7am to 4pm everyday just to earn 30k that can't even buy your toiletries and foodstuffs. All teachers should start thinking business and dump that profession. By the time nobody is applying for teaching jobs, the school owners will will be forced to pay teachers well. Teaching is a difficult job yet the least rewarded in this country.

You are right. The schedule is tight and the pay is ridiculous.

When I used to teach, I was teaching in three private schools at the same time as a part time teacher.

I was teaching physics, chemistry, mathematics, further Mathematics, and the workload was heavy.

By the time I would leave teaching for good, all the schools were furious with me because it's very hard to get a good science teacher.

Good. Owners of most of the private schools are exploitationists or sadists like Nigeria government and public civil servants. They are increasing school fee as just Nigeria is increasing petroleum price, but the increase in salary is neither a match to their SWEAT nor COST of what they will used the money to buy.
As Nigerians are Japa out of the country, the private teachers too are Japa out of private schools to other effort rewarding businesses.

The Nigerian Government has made the teaching job a laughing stock, see the way the government toys and plays football with professors and lectures in higher institutions, even primary and secondary school teachers are not doing better except for the benefits of pension and retirement packages and you expect private schools to do better? Politics or illegal activities pays more in Nigeria than teaching, if the country was a better place, I don't think young people would go into teaching mostly in these private schools than pursuing a better career.

Can you blame them?
Cost of living is high. They have to pay teachers too, and many of the parents don't pay school fees.

The ones that even pay , don't pay complete, and school fees debts pile up.

When you are in the system, you would know that it's not easy for schools.

I have taught some students in more than one school.

The same set of students jumping from school to school.

After owing school fees, once pressure mounts, they would run and jump to another school.

How do you now expect schools to retain teachers?

That was how I mistakenly saw the account balance on my proprietress phone and I was shocked with the kind of amount I saw, and I began to do some calculations within me that this woman can pay me at least a 100k for a start, why is she paying this peanut she's calls salary, my brother it's well with private schools only God will judge them, the way out is getting a job with the government or learning a skill or just get money from either hook, crook or book to start a business
Jewessgratitud3:
Why won't they be short of teachers when they pay peanut out of the millions they are making?

You'll see a school charging 50k on the average per child with a population of 100 or more pupils paying teachers 25k. Isn't that wickedness? And you expect such a person to continue working the millions for you while you and your family keep enjoying the money.

I tell you a real life story.

Before I never knew this mushroom private schools make hell of money until my experience with one.

This woman will always cry that the school is small that we should bear with her . When the school starts growing in number she'll do something about the pay..

One year down the line the number increased and she did an increment on her school fees. I approached her afterwards and tried to remind her of her promise to do something about our charges ( cos I'm on part-time arrangements). This woman turned to lion and tolde she can't do anything that in fact I'm earning higher than her full time teachers and she has not done anything for her teachers. I tried to let her know this was not our agreement but she turned deaf ears. Well.. since I have other schools that were paying well, I said let me calm down and see what will happen. That year she sent her son to Ukraine, this Someone who claims no money. The school kept increasing. She sent her two other children to a private university. Hmmm . Meanwhile her full time teachers were collecting 10k. Three years down the line, she still refused to do something about my charges. By then I had gotten better schools and was just using hers to rest. You know.. because I've been long with them, the school was already established in my subject, so I hardly do much or stress myself explaining for too long before they grab. Though I was not happy.

Four years down the line for the son in Ukraine to graduate, his school was bombed down. You guys know that university in Ukraine that got bombed during Russia and Ukrain war, that's the school the son was attending. She was crying and panicking that day and said she didn't know where the son ran to that he just sent the pics of the school and since then she has not heard from him that students are running all over the place while some are being evacuated by security men but that she doesn't even know where the son was. I was just consoling her that day. I saw the video of the school her son sent her burning.

All their computers, results and everything got burnt in that blast. The son was later evacuated to another neighboring Country with other students and had to start afresh because news went round then that since they lost their records and all in the fire, the school can't graduate anyone because no data to work with or determine who's due for graduation.

Now what am I trying to say, this woman used the sweat of her teachers to send the boy abroad to school in one of the most expensive universities in Ukraine while paying her teachers then, 10k as salary and always complaining school is not making money. Her other children are in private universities and till today she's still complains of no money just to avoid increasing salaries. Though according to the only teacher remaining there, I heard she has increased it to 25k now while she added a miserable 5k to mine claiming my charges has always been to high from the beginning. Now she has only two teachers left. She will interview new ones only for them not to resume the day they're supposed to.

Tell me why teachers will not leave.

Most of these private schools do not value their teachers....the workload is excess but the pay is very low.... during school events, the even use teachers to serve the parents and do other things and at the end they are not even appreciated very well.....

Many people who are after payment rarely have something spectacular to offer. Many teachers are too lazy and selfish. They will never do anything right unless policed. I won't justify anyone for underpaying and at the same time I won't crucify anyone for paying what he can afford. Teachers have their own portion of blame. Their eye service is out of this world for majority of them, especially those who go around lamenting about poor salary. I know what happens in that circle.

You are absolutely wrong here. Like 100% wrong. Some youth corpers are graduates of education who have also abtained their TRCN certs. So they fully qualified to teach. You can only refer to those who graduated from other faculties apart from education.

Everyone is right.

A BIG YES
SCHOOL BUSINESS IS VERY LUCRATIVE.
let's say you have 100 pupils.
75 will pay in full
15 half
10 won't pay or pay little.

After all expenses, there is still a reasonable amount left. Which from it a school owner can pay his or her salary and still have a lot left. But most live a flamboyant lifestyle.even the religious one amongst them.
