The Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Hans Essaadi, has said that the economic situation in Nigeria has deteriorated to the extent that citizens can no longer afford to buy beer.

Essaadi said this on Monday at the company's investor call following the release of its 2023 results.

"It has been an unprecedented year for our business in Nigeria. We saw a significant decline in the mainstream lager market as a result of Nigerian consumers no longer able to afford a Goldberg after a hard day's work," Bloomberg quoted Essaadi as saying.

NB suffered an #153bn foreign exchange loss due to the devaluation of the naira for the year ended December 2023.

For the period under review, the company grew its revenue by 8.9 per cent to #599.64bn from #550.64bn. Net finance expense rose significantly by 449.7 per cent to N189.19bn, dragging the brewer to a loss of #106.31bn from a gain of N13.19bn at the end of 2022.

FG should intervene immediately. If it means to subsidizes the beer,it will be a welcomed intervention which will go a long way in writing Tinubu's name on the great book of world leaders doing great things.

I don't condone the inflation but most Nigerians not being able to afford beer is good riddance with its own silver lining . IYKYK.

Not being able to afford beer is one of the offshoots of inflation, so indirectly you're supporting inflation.

For most people it's not beer but good food that they cannot afford, some can't even pay for transportation... There's NOTHING good about this sort of news, it only reflects the fact that all sectors of the economy are affected.

But some people are so far gone that it would not be surprising to see them climbing up Palm trees to tap Palm wine instead
Do you even know how much a keg of Palm wine is now? Small bottle water of Palm wine is 300 now, sachet Chelsea is no longer affordable now. Those who sold their votes are now regretting.

They should redirect the money to taking care of their families. Government should make it more expensive. Add tax.

I wish the average Nigerian can't afford the basic necessities of life, by then when they step out, they will step out and do something that's right and beneficial to them and everybody, but for now let's keep playing the " my brother" game.

That's what you think, but they will not, they will rather break into hardworking peoples shop to loot, forgetting about the people they voted for, just like they did In Osun during endsars.

What a pathetic bunch of fools they're. I don't know why Nigerians hate tackling the fact, instead they result to looting innocent people's shop. Well I guess the poverty and hunger weapon of apc is really really working. Come looting my shop, I will gun that person down on sight, go and loot properties of the government.
