Olumide Akpata Biography
Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, a Lawyer and Politician from Edo State, clinched the Labour Party's gubernatorial candidacy in the state after securing victory in the February 2024 primary elections. Prior to his political venture, Akpata served as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, making history as the first non-senior advocate to hold this prestigious position.

Born on October 7, 1972, in Edo State, Nigeria, Akpata received his early education in Warri, Delta State, and later attended King's College, Lagos for his secondary education. He earned a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Benin in 1992 and was called to the bar in 1993, completing his mandatory National Youth Service in Kano State.

Akpata's legal career commenced under the mentorship of Dr. Mudiaga Odje, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, OFR, in Delta State. In 1996, he moved to Lagos and joined Templars law firm, where he played a pivotal role in expanding the firm to employ around 100 lawyers, including two Senior Advocates of Nigeria. As a senior partner and Head of the Corporate & Commercial Practice Group at Templars, Akpata contributed significantly to crucial projects such as the restructuring of the National Electric Power Authority and the acquisition of the National Fertilizer Company of Nigeria.

In addition to his legal accomplishments, Akpata actively participated in advising on the deployment of Google Street View in Nigeria. He chaired the Nigeria Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) and later became the president of the Nigerian Bar Association, defeating two senior advocates to secure the position.

Entering politics in 2023 with the Labour Party, Akpata aimed to contribute to societal improvement. His distinctive perspective and ideas brought him to the forefront within the party, leading to his victory in the governorship primaries held on Friday, February 23, 2024.


With an estimated net worth of around $5 million, Akpata has received accolades, including the African Bar Association Award in 2022 and a recognition award from the Warri Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association for his exemplary stewardship.
