Culled from http://www.articlesbase.com/christianity-articles/an-eye-for-an-eye-3759338.html. Its mine. I wrote it. Please enjoy!

Popular Nigerian singer P-Square, in pidgin English, said in one of their songs: "if you do me I do you, man no go vex". In fact, this was the title of their song.

This mentality of an eye for an eye has been in existence in the African society, perhaps the world, for a very long time and I think that P-Square kind of stamped this mentality more powerfully on the mind of the youths. Thereby, making it seem natural.

But I beg to differ. This idea has to be uprooted.

An eye for an eye means that your reaction to an action is almost equal.

If I punched you in the face and you punched back and this happened to all of us, sooner or later, everyone will be blind.

So, we must learn to forgive and forbear things. It is not he who can forgive that is actually weak but he who cannot. For it is almost natural that when you punch me I punch you back.

But it takes strength to resist an urge to revenge and to do something different. It shows you really can control yourself.

This inability to control oneself leads to inability to change oneself and the world. A Bishop in Westminster Abbey lost this ability and this was said about him:

"At a tender age I had a dream of changing the world. I tried, tried and tried but the world would not change. Later I realised that if I had changed myself it would affect my family. Maybe, my State would have changed and later my country, my continent and the world, if I had changed myself."

Jesus said:

"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye… But I tell you… If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also… Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Matt 5:38-42 NIV

I was inspired to write this article after reading this beautiful quote of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr:

The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everybody blind.

So, dear friend, cease from having this mentality of an eye for an eye, "you do me I do you" attitude because that will hurt everyone.

Thanks for reading.

^^^^ I disagree a bit. It is my opinion that whoever plucks someone else's eye should be punished accordingly. It would be a much better world if we could learn how not to pluck each other's eyes in the first place. That way, a situation of "eye for an eye" would not arise to begin with. As the yoruba saying goes, igi gongo ma gun mi loju. . . If you don't want to get hurt, then hurt nobody.

Well said. And to add to it, people who take laws into their own hands in the name of revenge or retribution, only end up commiting the same offense.

Like M. K. Gandhi said, An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. It's more about the danger of revenge in this world. And like the other commenter said, I think forgiveness is the way forward, but when one is wrong, they should be made to see what they did wrong.

Yeah, forgive your boss for not giving you 3 months salary.

You people are just speaking rubbish. The Law is where there is a wrong, there must be a remedy and here you are saying that this man's family should forgive https://www.nairaland.com/8005838/lion-kills-oau-staff-vc#128540495

Isn't it funny how someone gets sentimental over a discussion then refer to an unrelated information.

However, do have a blessed day, Truth Speaker. cool

Did you not see an eye for an eye means that you are asking for like example the the man who had sex with your fiancee to not be punished?

Was that what you saw? I think you should read your replies to yourself. Peace.

Obviously, you did not know an eye for.an eye also means that he who does evil, must get the evil he gave which is why you dodged answering the question of the man who had sex with your fiancee.

It's funny you said 'obviously.'

However, let me respond to you with three points:

First, my understanding of an eye for an eye is a little above Karma as saying what goes around comes around, to doing to others what they do to you.

Secondly, the question you asked seems to be conflicting with your statements, making it difficult for me to understand your standpoint. (Respectfully, I shared a screenshot of the question you asked below, so you can read it again, and compare with what you said above.)

Thirdly, I don't have a fiancee, so I don't see why I should attend to your imposition cuz I didn't see any assumption there (though you said for example). Haha, but e no funny sha.

Enjoy your day, man! Shalom aleichem.

The bottoline is that you dodged the question and refused to answer it so that you do not have to lie in contradiction to what you ask others to do which is the basic point i made.

How saddening! So you can't see your mistake (if I should call it that).? Your question itself was a misconstruction of your previous statements (or maybe I'm the only one seeing it). And I did a favour of pointing it to you but sorry, you're all out pointing fingers from your mindset. Relax, there's no big deal in that question, my friend.

I think you have a problem with my statements because I mentioned the word forgiveness. But if only you paid attention to the last sentence, you probably won't be commenting.

However, I hope you don't forgive people when they wrong you. And I hope everyone you wronged, did pay you back likewise.

For that your question, if you construct am inline with your previous statements, I may consider attending to it, extensively. Take your time.

Shalom Aleichem.
