As expetced , the responses here are people denying that bypassing exisits, or excusing the bypassing on the ground that 'why should people pay for poor service'

I just dey look at NIgerians. You excuse evil, and then come and complain when Shaytan collects on the cost of evil.

TCN Has just told you why you do not have light. Most of you with meters refuse to pay for the power used by bypassing the meters. Add the fact that government too is not paying bills, and also add the fact that the bills are not cost reflective, and the answer is no money to fix things...and thus no light.

We don't have light because we do not pay for it. RIght now DISCOS and GENCOS are owing 1.5 bn dollars for gas...and where can they get the money when people bypass the meters?

I mean, we all admit things are bad, yet we refuse to pay the power companies. TELL ME, HOW ARE THEY GOING TO PAY FOR GAS, IMPROVEMENTS, ETC?

When GSM came, the service was BAD. And I mean bad. Plus for some time MTN could not call AIRTEL Or even landline self. It was that bad. Yet we paid their high prices, and they earned the profit to fix things and attract investment.

See how NIgerians complain...no light, yet sabotage the effort to give light 24/7 because they think everything must be free.

Awon poor NIgerians... grin

It is the job of distribution companies to investigate any metre not making money, disconnect and remove the metre. Then resort to estimated billing for that metre. It is so easy and simple. And if any bye-pass is detected, they should call in the police to arrest the criminals, make sure they spend time in prison.

They try to do that, and in most cases, people chase them with cutlass and other weapons.

And we clap for the bypassers doing so.

PHCN or TCN are responsible if truly people bypass meters, I know someone who has a meter that doesn't pick low current, he has complained severally to PHCN but they say that's how the meter is. can you imagine that for over a year now their area has been having low current every other people would have light but he will not have in his apartment because of the meter... this is someone that ordinarily buying card on the meter would never be a problem. So rose this oga in TCN expect such a person to remain in darkness when he can bypass the meter to restore light directly to his apartment...

Personally now in my area we have not had light for over 2 months reason because they said something got bad in the transformer, this is a transformer we levied ourselves to buy just about 2 years ago, each house in my area paid about 100k for this purpose, now something has gotten bad in the transformer BEDC say we have to contribute again to replace what got spoilt, and they come every month to collect light bill o, my question now is what do they use our light bill for if we have to provide Transformer for ourselves and still pay for it's repair... Does this Oga expect that if people in this area can bypass they will not? ... When PHCN is up and doing the people also will a act right

It is normal. How, when and where are they going to dividend on shares (money) with which they co owned and funding PHCN?
They buy electric poles, they buy and repair transformers , they buy wires and other expenses PHCN supposed to do themselves . So you expect them not to bypass to get back money invested in PHCN?

How will PHCN Pay for the transformers, electric poles, meters, wires, etc...when 60% of meters are bypassed, government agencies are not paying their bills, Aso Rock no dey pay, and people are refusing to pay outright self?

You are paying for the wires, et al, because most of the customer base is not paying their bills at all.

DO you pay for GSM antenna and wires? No, because you cannot bypass a phone and use GSM services without paying something. SO, they MTN and airtel and co all make profit to expand services and pay for wires and antenna and fuel, and so forth.Sadly the power sector does not have that option.

Even if this were true, it is reflective of the low willingness to pay for what people perceive is a useless service.

People would rather bypass their meters and use the money to fuel their power generators than trap funds on meters because the utility companies cannot supply constant power. Improve power supply and see whether the instances of meter bypass increases or decreases.. Then you can discern whether the issue is the unwillingness to pay or the inability to pay!

For now... Accept meter bypass as the consequence of your useless service

And the reason why the service is poor is because people bypass their meters, and use power for free.

Once that happens, where is the profit needed to improve servicies?

DISCOS and gencos are running at a loss because of meter bypass. It is the meter bypass that is why we have bad service. You get what you pay for.

I was told by a nepa official to let him know if I want to bypass and he will send someone over to do it for me .

Well, people do these because they have been fraudulent in the past too. If the distribution companies give advanced notice and publicise the offence of the tenant before coming to disconnect them, these attacks will reduce.

If every electricity consumer in Nigeria pays the actual cost of his electricity consumption, we will have constant electricity, a lot of energy thieves who dont know that they are the reasons why people cant get new transmission lines, new transformers etc because the TCN and Discos are struggling under heavy yoke of electricity thieves who dont pay for what they consume, they bypass their Air conditioning systems, by pass the hotstoves, microwaves, freezers. Yet we blame the discos for having no light.

Ya think the tenants don't know they are violating the law?

If they did not know, then either they have low IQ or they are being deceitful.

It is mostly because of folk like them that we don't have light

Quite true. However, it can't be up to 60%.

There are some coded electricians that can alter the operations of some of those meters. However, they would not do it for every and anybody. It's highly coded.
I know someone in particular, morning and night his air conditioning units are always on. In fact, most times even with no one at home, once there's power from the grid, you will hear both outer units working full blast.

All who participate in such, both electrician and user, are all booking their places in hellfire in the judgement to come. We will all answer to how we lived to our Maker.

I knew you'll be here to write gibberish without bordering to find out the veracity of his claim.

Do you also agree that there are only 13million registered electricity users in Nigeria? That is Lagos, Abuja, Kano, PH have less than 3million registered users? If you're conversant with the power sector, you'll know that just 2 years back, all discos were ordered to embark on customer validation which they did. So how can this man still claim Nigeria has only 13million users and you swallow it like fact?

To your claim about telco services, it's a testament to your ignorance. MTN not being able to call Airtel is not a question of lack of money. It's called interconnect and the technology was not yet deployed in the early days because NCC who was meant to oversee it had not yet rolled out guidelines for it. Since telcos are now making profit based on your claim, are our telco services top notch now? Do we have the fastest Internet speed or the largest broadband access in West Africa not to even mention Africa? Out of the four telcos, two have failed repeatedly and one is presently comatose. Where is Ntel of Tunde Ayeni?

For those quoting me, minus your sentiments and narrow-mindedness, nothing is wrong with my comment. My first sentence is a question. The second one which is also a question is conditional with the word, "if". I made the statement because meters are hung on electric poles in many parts of Enugu State where I stay. I didn't make any claim in the statement. I simply asked questions. It is appalling how many of you interpret things.

Not all are hung on electric poles, most houses in Lagos are hung on their buildings where it's very visible
